About the railways in Brazil. Most of the Eastern coast of Brazil (facing the Atlantic) has an endless chain of mountains, and huge farm lands this episode is covering is on the Western side of Brazil, so the goods produced in those farmlands have to reach the big cities and the Atlantic ports which are on the other side of those mountains. Two hundred years ago when the US and Canada begun to build their railway lines, they had huge flat lands, while Brazil had lots of mountains to overcome and the cost of building railways in such rugged terrain was much bigger. On top of that, back then Brazil did not manufacture locomotives (as it does now), and train wagons (as it does now) and Brazil did not have steel mills to produce all the rail material, and everything had to be imported and in those days Brazil was always short of hard currency. And then the 20th century begun, and it was the age of the explosion engine, and the cost of oil was very cheap and affordable, and back then, nobody ever predicted that one day there would be an oil shock, and after that one, another oil shock, and OPEC would be created, etc. And in the fifties of the 20th century Brazil was beginning its auto industry and the government had to prioritize the construction of roads so that the auto manufacturers had a domestic market to sell their products to. And while Brazil was producing its cars and trucks, Brazil did not produce yet its locomotives and train wagons, etc., which would have to be imported and there was always scarcity of hard currency. So, this is why Brazil developed an economy and a logistics which was essentially dependent upon trucks. But this is rapidly changing and Brazil is indeed building many new and modern railways which will exercise a huge impact (for the better) in the Brazilian GDP. As you correctly said, Brazil had until recently only 19 thousand kilometers of rails, but the new railways that are being concomitantly build all around Brazil will easily double that number, and since it is undeniable that trains freights are cheaper than truck freights, it is unavoidable that Brazil will continue to expand its railway network. And also the waterways. Brazil is also tacking this bottleneck.

So what?

@@normchandok4432 Brazil is going to produce 300 million metric tons of soy up to 2040. Right now Brazil produces more soy than the US, Argentina and China together (about 180 million metric tons). Brazil is increasing dramatically its production of corn and Brazil has developed a wheat variety that can be grown in the tropics, and the same rate of expansion we have had with soy, we will also have with wheat. Brazil is the biggest sugar producer on earth and the second ethanol producer but we will soon overtake the US and will become the nr. 1. Brazil is already the number one producer of coffee (the only commodity where the world spends more money is oil. Apart from oil, coffee is the second most important commodity measured by money spent on it. And what Brazil gets from its annual coffee production is equivalent to 150 million tons of soy. Brazil has mastered the tropics and learned to put it to work for it and not against it. And that is a hell of a game changer. Brazil has solved the lack of water in its Northeastern region (9 states, 50 million people, 20% the size of Brazil), and this area, now is poised to become a major grain producer as well. Brazil has become absolutely self-sufficient in energy and 80% of the Brazilian enery is clean, renewable, non-pollutant. And our energy capacity is expanding exponentially. Brazil has developed a very efficient and competent financial system, with very efficient stock and commodities exchanges, and very much solid banks. And Brazil is now solving its centuries-old logistic bottlenecks. Brazil has finished its first big and modern North And South Railway, with truly Siberian dimensions - By the way, Brazil is bigger than continental US in case you did not know - with about 6 thousand kilometers of length, and is in the process of building 4 other big railways crisscrossing the country from East to West, and they all with be connected to the North-South Railway. However, apart from these ones (all of them will be ready within two or three years more), Brazil is also building simultaneously 2 transcontinental motorways linking the Atlantic to the Pacific (three Chilean ports and three Peruvian ports) and 2 transcontinental railways, making the same connection. It is going to be the first time South America will have fast, efficient, cheap transportation linking the Pacific to the North Atlantic and vice-versa. Now, if you give yourself the trouble of verifying in a South American map the location of the Brazilian Mid West (in case you have not yet realized it, this is the biggest granary of the world), and you will readily realize that the Brazilian Mid West is 1,000 km away from the Pacific and 4,000 km away from the Atlantic. And our major buyers are precisely in the Pacific, not in the Atlantic. Brazil is also heavily investing in waterways. Brazil is seriously, efficiently, and relentlessly tacking its traditional logistics bottlenecks, and Brazil will have good, efficient, and cheap transportation costs. This is a miracle with regards to our exports to the Pacific, because that will shorten the distances by 10 thousand kilometers, it will reduce ocean freight rates, voyage time, lower Letter of Credit costs, etc. Because of all these factors combined, Brazil is set to double its GDP within 10 years. Today it is 2,5 trillion USD, so 10 years from now it will be 5 trillion, and it is expected to double it again in the next 10 years, so, by 2045 the Brazilian GDP will be 10 trillion dollars. And Brazil, together with the US will be the main food suppliers to the world. In summary, this is what it means the fact that Brazil is solving its traditional lack of railway systems, as you have asked, gentleman.

Carolina gives a brief description of the true enduring "thick skin" spirit of the people from southern Brazil. Just noticed how she describes the land by the time her parents arrived back in the beginning of the seventies! There was nothing up. No ready land, just bushes. No roads, no electricity, no nothing. I hope this can give a glimpse of what the true Brazilian folks are able to achieve even when playing against all odds. God bless!

The reason we don't have railways in Brazil started with foreign truck manufacturers. They lobbied the government hard to move cargo in Brazil using trucks, which ended up weakening the construction of railways. Today, truck drivers' unions are strong, but that is not the main reason we don't have railways. Over the last 10 years, the government has been implementing new projects to build railways in Brazil, and we believe that this situation could change in the next 10 or 20 years.

My family from paternal side was of rich coffee farmers/producers in the state of Minas Gerais. They lost everything with the 1929 stock market crash. My father used to say he was born rich and grew up poor.
@fabiofaria424321 күн бұрын
This happened with many rich families in Brazil in those dreadful years. The crash of the stock market in the US destroyed the economies of most countries on earth and this was so serious that it was one of the main reasons that Hitler appeared in Germany, Mussolini in Italy, Franco in Spain and Salazar in Portugal. Not to mention all countries in the Eastern Europe which had their economies destroyed and as a consequence becase dictatorships as well. And that was also the rule in Latin America. All important Latin American countries became dictatorships and it was that crash in the American stock market which was the main responsible for the emergence in Brazil of Vargas' dictatorship. And that poverty which struck your coffee producing family (which was the same fate of 99% of all other coffee producing families at that time in Brazil, was also happening in the sugar producing families of the Brazilian Northeast. Those families which were had become extremely rich and wealthy in the first 300 years of Brazilian existance, then began to face relentless downward sugar prices in world markets and that impoverished them all. Those were indeed troubling years, my friend. And on top of that, during the revolution of the explosion engines, which began to happen in the early decades of the 20th century, which worked based on petroil, the cost of the oil was so cheap that it was not feasible for the Brazilian government amidt severe economic crises to spend zillions trying to find petroil in Brazil. It made a lot more sense to import oil from the Middle East. And morever, nobody ever imagined or predicted the oil crises of 1973 and 1975 and the subsequent creation of OPEC. And on top of all those disgraces, there was also another huge problem which was contributing to devastate our public finances: the construction of Brasília. Brasília was an essential project and Brazil began to ascend to be one of the top economies on Earth essentially due to the construction of Brasília because Brasilia enabled the colonization of the MidWest, which now is the biggest granary of the world. But Brasilia was build by a phisician. Juscelino understood nothing about economy but he was not alone. Brazil only began to have its first Business Administration and Economy Faculties precisely during his government. Until then, and this looks crazy but it is true, no Brazilian finance minister was an economist. Simply because there were no economists in Brazil simply because Brazil did not have economics faculties...All those finance ministers were, as a rule, lawyers (...) and Juscelino did not care to the fact that Brazil did not have money to build Brasília. Which indeed, we did not have. He could not care less for that obstacle. His solution was to print money like mad in order to generate the cash to build Brasilia (again: Juscelino was right. He did the right thing because if we were to wait until we had money to build Brasilia that day would never come). The problem is that his crazy and uncontrolled money printing generated high rates of inflation, which also began to affect profoundly the Brazilian society. And then, there came in those two oil shocks, and all the Brazilian economy was based on imported oil, and we did not have money to buy the oil at those new absurdly high prices and the solution was to borrow money and as a consequence Brazil produced a huge foreign debt, and very high inflation rates (Argentina is undergoing this kind of thing right now). Juscelino's bold action launched Brazil in huge turmoil for the next 40 years. But all that has been overcome now. Brazil now is self sufficient in energy, Brazil is already the biggest food producer on earth, Brazil is solving all its serious logistics shortcomings, and Brazil has mastered the tropics and is able to produce three different crops per year in the same area and until Lula appearing, we had inflation under control and an exchange rate which was reasonable. Lula is doing his best to destroy the Brazilian economic fundaments, but those great infrasctructure works have already either been concluded or are about to be concluded, and pretty soon these great enginnering works will begin to give their contribution of the Brazilian GDP and so, even though we are heading to strong headwinds in the next few years, thanks to lovely Lula and his cronies, we will overcome such problems created by Lula fast and the Brazilian economy will boost. Faith in Brazil, my friend! Regards

So the Chinese are coming…the Chinese are coming…things are changing faster in 2024. We already have railroad tracks from Northeast to Southern Brazil, through Tocantins, Goiás hauling crops to from Central Brazil all the way to Southeastern port of Santos , São Paulo and towards Maranhão, in the Northeastern Brazil. Great podcasts IOWANS. Hope Trump will stop this trade war with China, hurting mid-west US and Canadian farmers, and now threatening BRICS countries with 100% tariffs. Olha velho. Eu gosto MUITO do Brasil. E tivemos grandes brasileiros, como os médicos Osvaldo Cruz e Carlos Chagas, Santos Dumont dentre tantos outros...
