i think it was smart, get the bike out, can the team - sales up instantly so not stuck with huge inventory and not stuck paying for a team that in reality enduro means nothing as its hard to get any media to EWS(fuck EDR) . basically nobody buys a MTB beyond XC because of race results.

A race team can be an amazing sales attribute, but most teams (Ibis included) fail to produce enough content from the team to validate the whole thing.

Maybe they'll get back in the game now that they have a bike with the credentials to rival the other big bikes in the field. As good as the Ripmo is, it's numbers are more trail than enduro by 2023 standards.

Hi Jeff thanks for a next great review. Thons of great job! The pictures are beautiful. The camera man, well done! I am kinda in between Santa MT / hd6 and yeti sb 160. How do they compare to each other in therms of playfulness? Is one of those bikes particularly better in pulling off switchbacks and carving nasty corners? I see myself playful, like to jump of everything. I am biking a lot in Swiss Alps which means 1.5/2k+ meters of ascent before all epic descents. I value Playfulness over efficiency on the ascent but still have to be able to pedal up as i do now with Megatower v1. Does small well of hd6 outdo santa and yeti in terms of maneuverability, and “manualability”?

Great review! I built up an HD6 last month and it's much more fun than my old Ripmo. I think that has more to do with the new sizes though. I was between sizes and went for the XL Ripmo, but the size 4 HD6 fits like a glove. Climbing is a bit more of a slog but otherwise I'm much happier.

I used to be in the school of thought that more travel = more fun. But lately I've been far more in the shorter travel and nimble camp. The terrain i ride hasn't changed. I think I just realized that a trail bike with a burly fork, some tokens, inserts and some strong wheels will handle anything I can throw at it and more.
@AORNova
@AORNova Жыл бұрын
Agreed! Went from the 27.5 Firebird to the brand new Shadowcat and, although you do lose the forgiveness and "send" factor of a 180mm enduro bike, the 140 trail bike is so much easier to place on the trail, throw shapes in the air, or muscle it up climbs. ... and with reasonably good line choice it can keep up with most enduro bikes (and it keeps your mind alert too). Trail bike ftw

Enjoyed the video, and appreciate your review of the HD6. Definitely more bike than I need. I test rode an HD5 and enjoyed it. I ended up getting a V1 Ripmo. It’s been my all around bike for a while, and is so much fun to ride! I lengthened the fork air spring to 170mm, and installed a negative 1.5 degree angle head set, so HTA is 63.9 degrees. Ideal set up for me riding local trails where I live in western NC.
@JeffKendallWeed
@JeffKendallWeed Жыл бұрын
Thanks Jason! The HD5 is soooo different from a V1 Ripmo- but glad you got the V1 set up better! I can't recall if they fit, but big ol 2.6 tires are great on the Ripmo AF and Ripmo V2s, they raise the BB and keep the bike more stable through the rocks. I still enjoyed my usual 2.5/2.4 combo in Asheville, but for the rougher stuff, the 2.6s would be nice.
@jasonisaac1
@jasonisaac1 Жыл бұрын
Indeed! Yes, they do fit. I’ve got a 2.6 in front on my Ripmo, Maxxis Assegai, and a 2.5 Aggressor in back. It does help with traction on chunky rock sections.

@bensbikes

So I had the opportunity to demo this bike yesterday and I have to agree with you about its climbing characteristics. I found the bike a bit awkward to climb on relative to my Ripmo V2. The seated position on a size S3 was farther back than was really comfortable for me, and I noticed that I had to put more power through the pedals to get the bike to roll over rough sections on technical parts of the climb. The descents were the opposite, I rode this bike down a variety of steep and technical trails and managed to set a couple new PRs. I think this bike could be sweet if you ride a lot of lift-accessed areas or do a lot of shuttling, but for big climbing days I'd give it a pass.

Ditch the clevis shock for the setup the HD6 has, up the rear progression to around 30%, maybe go up to a 60mm stroke shock (like the Sentinel has), slacken the HTA a hair and it would be dramatic improvement over the Ripmo V2. Maybe work on the cornering feel a bit too, Ripmos are still a bit vague leaned over.

For many! For me, the Exo+ doesn’t have the support, it folds over for me at the usual 22 psi. DD is the only way I feel comfy. But that’s just me! Also I don’t mind a max grip rear tire.

@jonathanhowson6420 Жыл бұрын
@@JeffKendallWeed I have been watching since 7k sub's and so glad to see how you have grown. Great to see you have a little girl as well. Shotgun Pro review? Absolutely agree with what you say. I spotted SC Nomad speculated with EXO+ front and DD rear so I tried that setup out. I had to put a little more pressure in the front because I experienced the folding as you said, but a combination of Maxx Grip, ACS3 coil conversion and Zipp Moto3Zero rims gives insane levels of front end grip and compliance. A lightweight insert in the front may help to allow lower front end tyre pressure until I replace the front with a DD as you say. Keep up the good work and loving all you do and your amazing positive attitude.

I'm pretty sad that I can't buy a 27.5 bike from Ibis anymore. The HD3 was perfect for PNW trails--Oakridge, OR. HD4/5 seem pretty great, too. The HD6 is too big of a bike for me (and I think a lot of people). It's not an all-mountain bike anymore but a real Enduro race bike. I also don't want 29 front or rear. I'm short (5'5") but have other mtber friends at 5'7 and 5'9" that also hate 29ers. I demoed the Ripmo and I was like, wow, best 29er I've ever ridden...still don't like 29ers. My local Ibis dealer isn't stocking any because he hasn't had a ton serious interest, is sitting on a bunch of leftover bikes as it is (I snagged his last carbon RM Altitude for a great price), and mullet bikes in general don't sell well in Colorado, this is 29er country and this same shop sells Ripmos like hotcakes. To give an option of a more responsive bike? Ibis has always had tidy, short stays, and until everyone else started doing differing lengths, it was usually seen as a pro rather than a con. I do think an adjustable drop out like Rocky Mtn did for the Altitude would make sense- a fun short short setting in the low/mid 430 range, and a boring, long setting in the 440+ range for tall folks.

Do you have recommendations on a bike with enough travel to take on downhill and formidable jumps as well as climbing around ATX? I’ve only come up with finding an e-bike (bring the comments YT… my back doesn’t mind). 😂

Ah for Austin, I thought my 140 travel HD4 was great. These days I could see either a Ripmo Carbon or a Ripley AF being a great choice. Mid-travel is plenty for most stuff around there (RPR, Cat is all we rode)

I'm in ATX. I ride a Specialized Stumpjumper Evo Pro in mixed wheel. I put a WRP yoke and a Cascade link on it. I'm a heavy rider, 220 and it handles Spider Mountain just fine. It is highly adjustable so you're not stuck with 1 geo. The adjustability covers trail and enduro. The only upgrade I'd recommend are the tires. I've experienced less grip on the stock tires going fast but for trail riding, like a Brushy Creek it's a good tire. The other must have is a STFU because if you are hammering fast, the chain will 100% chip the frame just behind the chain ring.

Thanks for watching! And thanks for supporting your local retailer, that's great. I didn't truly understand the value of Jenson USA until I was working at Ibis. Ibis has always been awesome to their IBDs, but there inevitably comes a time when there is a surplus of old stock and a cash shortage, and $$$ is needed to either purchase new models or pay taxes on that inventory. Large online outfits like Jenson USA would be able to purchase that inventory in one fell swoop, and would keep everything in the black. Also, it was pretty often that someone who was hundreds of miles from an IBD would want a bike, but Ibis is not consumer direct. Both are key, both are different.

What are your thoughts on Ibis 35mm carbon wheels? Considering upgrading the blackbirds on my Ripmo...

They are fine. I prefer the feel of the I9/WR1 combos, but the Ibis 35mm carbons are fine.

Seems like an outstanding bike that is definitely not for me. (I'm currently building a Ripley AF.) To your point about climbing, the thought of using the lockout seems to defeat one of my favorite things about DW link - that I can just ride it open all the time.

To be fair, when fully open, the HD6 pedals pretty well. But I do notice the chance in efficiency more than on any other Ibis bike. If you're going Ripley AF, then the HD6 is likely way overkill. Thanks for watching!!!!

Idc what people say, this is the best all rounder bike in the world in my opinion, if i had the money to buy it i would have preordered it, it's on of the best looking bikes especially in the purple haze colour, like you want to do easier things put lighter tires, want to do real enduro it's ready from the box, want to do downhill just put a dual crown fork, like it's too efficient on the climbs for a 165/180mm bike, it feels like a trail bike when descending, the only bad thing about it is the price but you get what you pay, it's the perfect bike for me

As someone who owns an enduro bike (RM Altitude) and has previously owned a Ripmo and has ridden a bunch of the enduro bikes out there. With big bikes, always demo first, enduro bikes aren't necessarily all arounders like the Ripmo is. You have your huge cushy shred sled bikes like the Spire and Norco Range, big hit park bikes like the Nukeproof Giga, super sharp race weapons like the Orbea Rallon and Ibis HD6 (at least based on JKWs review), and some that are kinda all arounders like the RM Altitude.

Since 2018, I haven't had any issues. I think a big part of that is I almost never use the Trunion mount bikes, and also that I tend to swap those shocks off for more aggressive, smaller volume shocks like the Float X.
