That was one of my first electronic keyboards out of HS, I learned to type on a manual typewriter. Max speed was 65 WPM for me at the time, started a new job and it was data entry. My speed went up by another 30 WPM using that keyboard, only issue was that the people around me couldn't stand the clickity clack sound (I typed all day long). Great restoration, and great memories. Whenever I see an old keyboard without the Windows key on it, I take it home and clean it up, adapt it for usb use but yeah people still can't stand me typing 110 WPM on it :)

A little late to the comments but KZbin just recommended. I'm typing this comment on a Model M born on 8 Aug 89. So 34 years and still going - good for another 34 years at least. Like yours, this is also bolt-modded. I didn't do it myself but bought it from a guy around 7 or 8 years ago. Thank you SO MUCH for restoring another Model M - we need more of this in today's society - everything is throw away nowadays and nothing it built to last. Hell, the crappy keyboards that come prepacked with HPs nowadays are so bad you just throw them right away - no one wants them.

Very nice. I have a couple of Model Ms that need to be cleaned and it's nice to see the steps required.

Awesome! This takes a lot of time and patience. I occasionally deep clean my keyboards that way and it's a very time consuming task (and I don't have to drill and screw nothing).

Done a fair few of these restorations now, and even pre bolt mod it's a task and a half, a tip for removing keycaps quickly - put a flat head screwdriver on the underside of the keys and pull up, they'll come off in entire rows if you have a big enough screwdriver.

Great video! Goes to show that these boards can even be brought back when severely abused and stored in an unhospitable environment. Sadly the bolt mod is a requirement for any M at some point, but once done, it should be good for another 30 or so years :)

I was lucky to be able to pick up a couple if new in box PS2 Model M keyboards a couple of decades ago. Still going strong. Have never taken it apart to clean but do occasionally wipe it down to clean off the smutches. Great keyboard.

Kinda curious, where did you find them?
@tomschmidt3813 жыл бұрын
@@fiverZ Back in the 1990s we had several local brick and mortar electronics surplus stores. Unfortunately all of them are long gone both the computer version and electronics components. I forget how much they cost but could not have been much because I bought 2. Just checked eBay, boy are they expensive now.
@fiverZ3 жыл бұрын
@@tomschmidt381 Oh nice. Yeah they're pretty expensive now. I bought 2 last year for over €120 each :/

Great job on this restoration! Out of curiosity (I am also planning on doing this), what are the exact dimensions of the screws and nuts that you used? Also, what diameter holes did you drill, and what diameter rounded tip did you use for the bevel?

In another video they used M2 screws (M2 x 0,8mm) , but with a different head so they stick out more. -> kzbin.info/www/bejne/moTXmK2DpbSHhaM

Hi, liked the video. I have another question to the restauration. Some keys on my keyboard are sometimes not easy to press. It seems as the are tiltet (very little). After pressing the key with more force it is working again. Any idea how to repair this? Thanks for the help

Excelente restauração, mas achei esse cabo meio estranho. É possível comprar novos cabos de substituição do Model M (SDL em uma ponta e PS/2 na outra) no eBay.

I bought the Unicomp Classic 101 March 2021 and now September 2023. Used a few times and was put into storage. Recently rediscovered and noticed "P" key was acting erratic requiring two or three taps to make contact. Contacted Unicomp and was given RMA but would cost $48.00 plus $16 shipping. After doing my own disassembly I found all but 6 plastic rivet heads were broken off. Unicomp claims this issue was resolved before I purchased in 2021. I would not advise purchasing from Unicomp based on my experience.

Does the conductive paste need a few hours to dry? Because I accidentially cut the membrane and a few traces and trier to repair it with silver conductive paste. But it does not work, no beep with the multimeter. Any speciel tips for repairing those traces?
@joopidema Жыл бұрын
Yes. its needs some time to dry and then it becomes conductive.
