Two years after the release of the Grammy Award winning album Buena Vista Social Club, many of the same musicians went back into the studio to record the debut album of Ibrahim Ferrer, one of the stars of the BVSC. With Ry Cooder and Nick Gold producing, this release helped elevate Ibrahim to superstar status.
This album is a collection of eleven songs by the golden voice of Cuban music. Using the Buena Vista Social Club rhythm section and featuring the piano of Rubén González, this album takes the listener on a very different journey to that of any other Cuban record. It is an album of great subtlety and beauty, featuring an extraordinary stylistic range from the nostalgic 1950s American big band style, to stunning ballads with an unusual and opulent guitar accompaniment, as well as rich country-style son.
Ibrahim Ferrer, who had never been famous in his own right in Cuba, emerged as the one true discovery of the Buena Vista sessions. Always known as a musician’s musician with a naturally gentle and unassuming manner.

Some American fans of the Buena Vista Social Club who hadn't been entirely privy to Ry Cooder's participation complained about the electric guitar work on this album, but failed to realize that most of the lead lines were played not by Cooder but by Manual Galban who in this particular case was recreating his work from the original recording of this song by the vocal group Los Zafiros. Galban (who died in 2011) was a terrific musician though I could concur that some of his work on this album felt somewhat out of place (his solo on the Faustino Oramas son Marieta being a case in point coming off stiffly against the otherwise stellar instrumentation). Because his musicianship was so important to the makeup of Los Zafiros, I couldn't blame him for my slight disappointment in the execution of this song for Ibrahim Ferrer's version. I ultimately feel that it's Demitrio Muniz's string arrangement that slightly brings this version down since it doesn't blend very well with Galban's guitar. Had the strings been somewhat more restrained than they ultimately were, I might have appreciated this performance of "Herido De Sombras" more than I do.

I think the guitar that Manuel plays on it is very called for for this style. It's tasty and the vibrato effect goes perfect.
