9:12 actually, someone had an AMA who lives in Crimea. They said nearly everyone they knew wanted to be a part of Russia, and Crimea was basically unofficially Russian before Russia officially took over. The traditions and language were all Russian, and the people related more with Russia than Ukraine. It was a very interesting AMA if you didn’t see it.

Actually the common world map is called a "de jure" ("by law") map which shows what is internationally recognised as the borders (which is complicated cause not everyone agrees on everything) while the "apolitical world map" is an attempt at a de facto map which tells what is actually happening regardless of law which also has its own advantages and disadvantages and is far less common

North Sentinel Island is an interesting case. Officially it is Indian territory but the Indian government leaves all control over the island and the people on it to the indigenous population. So who has "territorial control"? The Sentinelese who actively control the land or India whose stance is basically, "we own it but let the people there get on with things without interfering." I don't think the islanders would agree that they are subordinate to India. They certainly don't pay taxes and even attack outsider who try to come to their island.

How come in some areas of the map, where a piece of land is split off from the 'mainland' it sometimes has the national flag who owns it, or sometimes the states/region flag? Does it mainly depend on if it's a federal country or not? E.g. for Alaska, it doesn't show the US flag but the Alaskan flag. While island countries show the countries flag.

You don't have to show only one country/flag as in control of any territory, and you could also include a distinction between de facto and de jure sovereignty for a country or territory. That would allow you to show both political, internationally recognized boundaries and practical boundaries showing military and legal control.

The Ukrainian elections are a language (see previous election maps- the country basically ends up split in like 2/3 sort of) -cultural thing. The East speaking more Russian and the West speaking typically Ukrainian (though Russian words are sometimes used as slang as well as English words, there's thing where people speak half UA and and half RU and it's it's own dialect I guess called Surzhyk). That bit of red is the really traditionally Ukraine region because had more freedom that other oblasts which used to be under harsher countries (also the USSR imported Russian settlers into Eastern Ukraine after the Holodomor and such so...) so culturally so even just looking at the options, they would chose the person who will be anti-Russia. So voting against Zelensky was more a language/culture nationalistic thing (also maybe a hint of anti-Semitism had something to do with it *sigh*). People just want out with the war but on the other side you have people who want it to end. People from the East run to the West so it's an added reason Western Ukraine wants the war to end. Fun fact, there's a political group called Voice (Holos) that was lead by the leader of the band called Ocean of Elza (Okean Elzy). Yet, the actor who owns a comedy show (95th Apartment) won the elections helped by the show (the Servant of the People) he made with the very name of the party he created in parliament...For the 'conservatives' (lets just use that word), they are ever frustrated by the things he's filmed (the sketches in his show) which just seems so counter to who a president should be. Also they are frustrated by how they don't expect him to do well as he may run a business, but that it's not the same thing as running a country (he is very haughty from some of the more embarrassing clips I've seen my parents watch or talk about, like 'I'm a president, so you should do what I say' kinda think when people try to critique him which grates on people). I don't always really listen to what's up there so from what I can recall from my parents and relatives that's sort of the basics I guess. The green voted for a solution to the 'corruption' issue (corruption is a real problem, but they way some people talk it seems as if they reduced it to a strawman which needed a simply solution and Zelensky embodied it by letting everyone project onto him their own ideas on what needed to be done. I guess people must have really like his show, the Servant of the People because of the overall theme of anti-corruption).

i think tge methodology used to construct it is very much political. obviously the creator chose a set criteria and somewhere along the line that criteria did not allow for the consideration of alternate froms of governance which leads to many of the issues you highlighted. another example is the erasure of the zapatistas in mexico
@TheLocalLt
@TheLocalLt 4 жыл бұрын
Jay Williams the Zapatistas were on there, they don’t have a formal government though. As for OP’s comment I don’t believe of those factions actually has control over their land, Syrian Kurdistan is shown, Iraqi Kurdistan isn’t because it lost its independence and submitted to the Iraqi court system a couple of years ago, West Bank is an external Israeli territory which it has allowed the Palestinian Authority to run locally since 1993. Judea and Samaria is Israel’s settler entity in the West Bank, and is set to be annexed to Israel itself, along with portions of the West Bank, in the near future, according to Israel. Sealand has no physical land mass, and Native American reservations are not sovereign entities, as they posses limited sovereignty in certain cases superseding, but only at on behalf of, the American government in those areas. They could theoretically be declared independent by the American government, similar to South Africa ceding independence to bantustans such as Bophatupswana, or the natives could theoretically declare independence on their own if they really wanted to fight for it, but both of those possibilities are remote and were far more likely to occur as a result of the Indian/native Wars.

As a Cypriot I have to say the A-political map of Cyprus did not accurately describe the status quo. First of all, it lists Akrotiri and Dhekelia separately even though they are he same administration according to the UK. Secondly, Akrotiri and Dhekelia are not, in fact, British Overseas territories but rather disputed areas between the UK and Cyprus. In reality, they are ran as condominia, but some parts of them are not ran at all by the UK. Thirdly, the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” is a de facto Turkish puppet state heavily controlled by Turkey. (But tbh many puppet states are not shown as such). Also, Toycat mentioned “they are mostly Turkish there” but in fact, besides the fact that they are Turkish Cypriots, the majority of the population in those areas was Greek-Cypriot before it was invaded.

Well, about Crimea (hello from fellow russian btw), there was a referendum on the annexation of Crimea to Russia. And so people decided they wanted to be part of the Russia, so that comment about people wanting to be part of Ukraine is kinda wrong... Though personally I can't say whether this mess was or was not worth it. Our economy kinda sucks and that whole situation hadn't helped it so... And also Crimea sucks, not gonna lie, and that whole referendum is highly debatable because due to our extremely pro-governmental news sources people still argue about results. Yeah, living in Russia is very fun lol.
