You should read ‘The Class Ceiling’ by Friedman! It’s a really good read about the role of privilege, cultural capital and material resources in ‘getting in’ and ‘getting on’ in elite professions in the UK! It’s a good read but it also has very informative content that is based on both quantitative data and qualitative case studies (interviews with people in top firms in elite professions).... Ibz, human rights law seems like something that is quite difficult to get into when compared to the more 'corporate' side of things. In my city (Liverpool) there are COUNTLESS corporate/financial or personal/small injury etc firms yet no human rights firms. There are a few pro bono human rights law charities in my city but they seem to provide limited opportunities career-wise. How feasible is it to have a career in human rights law? Is a successful career in human rights law only reserved for the brightest minds of this country (e.g. Oxford/ Cambridge graduates)? Would it require moving to London? If anyone can answer these questions that would be a great help. I, too, am the first person in my family to practise law and have basically no contacts for advice/experience.
@aimeewheredidyoursociallif79264 жыл бұрын
Hi, current law student here so don't take this as gospel truth. First of all, it depends on how you'd want to pursue your career. Do you want to practice as either a solicitor or a barrister? Or work as a paralegal? For a solicitor, as part of your training you'll be required to have a training contract with a firm, and following this most firms if not all will expect you to work for them for at least a few years after that. So your best bet there would be to try and source a firm that has some form of specialty in human rights law or in judicial review cases, or work for a more standard corporate and commercial firm for a while before trying to make a move to a different firm later. As a barrister, you're pretty much self- employed and so for a long time you will be taking any cases that you are offered until you have built up a reputation and can afford to be a little more choosy with your cases, after which you can again start looking to human rights or judicial review oriented cases (this will be particularly evident in appeal cases). Your best bet is honestly to volunteer a lot with those human right pro- bono charities and take advantage of any human rights related opportunities you can get through your school. For example, my law school does a human rights law oriented trip to South Africa each year to work with charities while a lot of people go onto volunteer with the Human Rights Commission in Northern Ireland. Even simple things like asking guest human rights lecturers if they practice or know anyone who practices that they can get you in contact with, or when it comes time to study judicial review asking your lecturers the same thing. The main thing is building up a reputation with those sorts of charities and pro- bono firms that will make it easier for you in the future to practice.In law, you will find human rights to be involved in a lot more areas than you think so honestly, just keep an eye out for any chances and take them, even in more mainstream areas of law like summer vacation schemes and internships etc. A career in human rights law isn't easy to get, but you will be able to involve it even as you work to that more specialist career or area. In terms of qualifications, as long as you have a well- rounded CV with at least a 2:1 or a 1st, your university doesn't typically tend to matter. If you can work hard and work smart, and have practical experience with the law there is absolutely no reason why you can't practice human rights law no matter your university. Sorry for the long answer, but I know what it's like to be on your own in the field of law and I wish you all the best with your course :)

I actually think the GDL is a bit unfair towards law students. Imagine slaving off for 3 or 4 years and someone else studies ANY degree of their choice and can decide to switch to law and study for a year and be equivalent to you. I think it should be specific degrees. Your psychology skills could come in handy in law! Congratulations on choosing a new path 💕
@swand13834 жыл бұрын
Stine K it isn’t unfair, the law students could choose to do that but they choose not to. Lots of law firms often prefer students with non-law degrees because law students sometimes act like they know everything about the law
@Kiaamaka4 жыл бұрын
@@swand1383 You have a point, but I don't think someone who did one year of work should be equivalent to someone else who did 3/4 years. If the GDL ran for about 2 years that'd be more reasonable. Law is a very complex field so people shouldn't be able to just wake up and decide to be a lawyer.
@swand13834 жыл бұрын
Stine K you can’t just wake up and decide to be a lawyer lol, the GDL costs £20,000 often, including living and rent, and it usually has to be paid for by a law firm with the expectation of a training contract and work. To get a training contract, you would have to do vacation schemes and get involved with the law firm in at the latest your second year of uni even if it’s a physics degree or whatever. Also, the GDL condenses 18 months of a Law degree into one year which is why it is so short, and only includes the strictly necessary modules, excluding electives, and including the foundations of the law. It is an incredibly difficult and intensive course and at the end of it you are qualified in two different subject areas, so is well worth it
@swand13834 жыл бұрын
Stine K also, if it was 2 years long there would be no point to it because people just wouldn’t do it/ would just do straight law, which firms don’t want so it realistically should be 1 year
@Kiaamaka4 жыл бұрын
@@swand1383 haha yes it's expensive to become a lawyer! Two years is half of it though. The GDL is a great idea, don't get me wrong but as someone who is an aspiring lawyer, it just seems too much of a shortcut for a profession where shortcuts wouldn't be advisable. On the talk of vacation schemes and training contracts, if you want to be a solicitor after studying for 3/4 years you'd still have to go through that process so I don't think you can't count that when it is just a standard procedure to finalize your qualifications
