After seeing that model number I now want to make a icicle shaped test board and name it a test-icle. I am 13 apparently.

It would have been nice to see what happens with a known faulty chip. Yes it recognises chips programmed in its memory and errors on ones it does not recognise but how good is it at finding faulty chips?

@@LearnElectronicsRepair It is easy to simulate a faulty chip, just short some outputs to the gnd or vcc pins on the same chip. Normally when chips fail the outouts get stuck low or high.

I've just bought one for £34 off Ebay. It's a no-brainer at that price. I remember in the mid 1990s, the company I was an electronics repair engineer for, getting the Chipmaster IC testers and I thought it was amazing, but, at the time I think it cost the company about £250 EACH, which in today's money is about £500. I think they did a digital and a linear one, and they were around the same price for each, but they were invaluable, especially if you had an item in where most or all of the ICs were in sockets. 😊

Those numbers flash up much too quick for my slow brain on the KT152 😆 Did you try testing one of the other BA4560 op amps? It's possible that the one you tried might have been a genuine reject, but not very likely. Surprising that it cannot test a 741. 🤷‍♂

Oof, can remember in the 1980’s we had a magical chip tester that could test all TTL 74 and CMOS 4000 chips… managers all believed in it… well, not so good in practice in things that used 7400F chips… still had to swop perfectly working 74F chips until we found one that actually worked… i guess it was some marginal design (in military equipment no less) that relied on some ultra-critical parameter that this very expensive chip-tester couldnt’t pick up. After that, I am quite sceptical of chip-testers… there are always some paramteters they don’t test.

The chips pass in the chip tester because they are usually operated at a low frequency like 1MHz. Most PCBs run logic at 10MHz or greater. For example 74F chips can operate up to 30MHz. This is why chips pass in the tester but not on a board.

@@LearnElectronicsRepair I did a bit of checking. It's not a 328. The chip on your board has 48 pins. It's also not a ATMega1284 which has 44 pins. So you/Det will have to reverse the pinout and figure it out. Either way it's definitely some kind of cheap flash-based microcontroller.

It would be interesting to see if it could kill a good chip by installing it wrong. I really dig these little bobbles and gadgets. My lizard brain likes shiny things that light up! :) And you need to check some "known bad" chips to see how accurate it is. I've had false positives on one of my transistor testers.

@@LearnElectronicsRepair Well more likely it survived because the ZIF has a fixed pinout and only provides VCC on the last pin of DIP8/14/16/20 chips. Since the position where you put it was not shorting the chip GND to ZIF VCC pins it didn't get any power, hence why it survived.

A combination of the testers would be brilliant, auto-detection with a proper display. Something like that is probably available but at a much higher price, I haven't bothered looking as i doubt I will ever need one. I'm surprised it couldn't handle a simple 74244, it is only a buffer/driver.

These cheap logic testers are not much good. The supported devices and associated tests are all ripped off from eprom programmer software. They have the same bugs and the same limited common set of chips (but those are far worse with lots of common chips missing!) and the same limited set of basic tests with no feedback about what is wrong or what pins are bad. Basically a waste of money. The 2nd tester is kind of impressive that it can identify other chips but the display method is really stupid lol! If you want a slightly better logic tester get a TL866-II. If you want to test 1000's of chips the correct way, including RAM, ROMs/PROMs (including dumping them), PALs (including cracking protected chips), ALL logic (no bugs and auto-detect unknown/scratched chips) and many many special and rare chips (including being able to program 2708 EPROMs and test any old memory chip not supported using custom pin definitions) and hundreds of other functions (operation manual is over 200 pages) get a Retro Chip Tester Pro. It's a build-it-yourself project but once you have this you move up a couple of rungs on the food chain ;-)

I have a TL866 and use it regularly on my videos. Regards Retro Chip Tester I also have one, will review it. But it is hard, and to be honest unreasonable, to directly compare something which costs as much as RCT does (or even the TLL866) with these cheap testers don't you think?
@g4z-kb7ct
@g4z-kb7ct 5 ай бұрын
@@LearnElectronicsRepair I'm comparing functionality. If something only does a tiny fraction of something else it's not worth buying it at any price. I have a friend who buys the cheapest bacon but he's too stupid to realise he's buying a packet of fat. Whereas I buy the lean bacon and get to eat actual meat hehe! Lack of support for a 74LS244 is a deal breaker as it's a very very common part. The RCT isn't that expensive and is kind of fun to build. For someone like me who routinely repairs 80's and 90's arcade pcbs the RCT has paid for itself 1000X. Yes the RCT supports some op-amps but not that many. I have been badgering the developer for several years about it, testing it and getting him to add a lot of parts (including common pinout cross-reference parts) and finally got him to add some common opamps which have similar pinout (some have to be inserted backwards, noted in the docs and on the LCD). At one point I even proof-read the entire manual and noted all the German-English spelling/grammar mistakes so they could be fixed. The microcontroller is also nearly full (it has 256kB internal flash rom) and the developer has had to continually optimize and improve the firmware to make space. I suggested adding a SOIC8 serial EEPROM of ~1MB to expand external memory but that's unlikely to happen due to the current design. Unfortunately another design choice at the beginning of development makes it near impossible to support all op-amps without a re-design of the board as they are analog devices and the microcontroller analog pins were used to drive the LCD display. Yeah I know, a really bad choice given there are about 6-8 unused pins on the MCU that could have been used for the display. I know this because I have the schematic which I reversed just for my own curiosity. The RCT was originally designed as a logic and RAM tester and it does that very well. The extra stuff it can test is a nice bonus. Also, I confirm testing SMD logic etc works fine using the DIP-SOIC adapters. Regarding supported chips, you absolutely MUST use the reference supported-chips document and comparelist search tool to find out if a part is supported. It is impossible to put every part listed in the internal 256kB memory. The lack of referring to the documentation is a big part of why people _think_ the RCT is no good. They only look at what the LCD shows and don't realise it does a LOT more.

@@LearnElectronicsRepairI like the review! And I am with you that it is not really fair to compare the TL866 to these 2 little devices if you only need or want the capability of the latter or do not want to spend more money. However if you want more functionality then you are far better of with the TL866 than buying, say, both little testers.
