One additional point. Military dwarves with injuries that make them bad soldiers (wounded veterans) make excellent scholars. They likely have a wealth of knowledge on military matters as well as other peace time skills. Rather than sending your crutch dwarf into battle to die because he has no limbs on one side, let him retire to a scholarly roll and pass on his knowledge to the younguns to then practice.

Stuff like this is fun and frustrating in equal measure. On the one hand it *really* is simulating a complex supply and manufacturing process, which is super on brand for the game. On the other...complex supply and manufacturing processes are a lot of work. Its like making steel equipment. You know you should do it, but the process takes so many steps that its very easy to just...not do it. Then you die because some bronze monstrosity isn't affected by the copper weapons that have worked so well on goblins.

Just automate it... My steel and paper industry run on it's own. Whenever I need smth, they go do it automatically. If it's in enough stockpile, they wait around and go do other things.

so using scrolls you dont get to pick and choose which books get printed? but you can with a codex? will the dwarfs get upset if I throw their bad quires into lava?
@FourEyedBird2 жыл бұрын
does the bug still exist where in the process of binding a quire it loses both its value and the information written inside it? used to be that it was binding quires was actively detrimental since the resulting codex is turned into a 1-page manual worth only the value of the binding materials

I still can't keep my library going because I can't make a stockpile for book binders and scroll rollers, tried a tool stockpile with no bins as per forums advice and that didn't work, so I can't make scrolls nor books. I really hope someone that know how to solve my problem read this comment.
@Ic0nGaming10 ай бұрын
You need to put a chest into the area which is declared as library. They will put all necessary items for writing in there automatically, no stockpiles needed. It's the same as with taverns and hospitals. =)
@MalakianM2S10 ай бұрын
@@Ic0nGaming I did put several chests, the quires were moved there but nothing else, now that I realize I didn't check the order list and maybe the hauling of the rollers were down there buried under a pile of stone hauling. Thanks for the info, I'll try that again and pay attention to the hauling "procedures". EDIT: I did try again keeping the rollers in the workshop and this time I could make the scrolls, I don't understand why the first attempt the game gave me a error message telling me that the rollers needed to be in a proper stockpile and this time it didn't, but nevertheless I crafted my first 5 scrolls today.

On the wiki it says that so long as they are in a library zone, dwarfs will talk to each other, even if they are walled away ?

Please take this as a constructive criticism, and not a dumb trash comment. I usually like your guides as they are concise and clear. Now please note that I already know the process of making books and I have a perfectly running library out of quires and codices. So I come here not to say that I don't understand how to do it. I'm fine doing it. (just have to figure out scrolls now for the fun of it) And that's where the problem stands. If I had no clues how to make any of those components, the way you presented this very video would really confuse me. The sole fact that you are simply explaining, hovering your mouse over the shops is way too vague for one of the most complex things to craft in this game (maybe behind instruments I guess ?) How one would know how to make paper out of plants ? You never ever stated any of the most 2 common plants to make slurry. (Rope reed & Pig Tail). You just stated the steps (mash into slurry & press into paper) But you never ever (unlike most of all your other videos) actually show the process in game from step 1 to end product. For that I talk solely about producing the writing material process. That's where this tutorial falls a bit short compared to all your other very good tutorials. The book writing itself would probably be more a problem to show results. Sorry for being "that guy" but always being nice just to be nice never helps the creator to get better. 💖

Nah, you are nailing the point I was unhappy with myself. I struggled with either: Making 2 videos about Library and Paper Making. Or cram both topics together and in the end go too hasty over some points. Thanks for the positivity behind your criticism, I'll make something out of it ;)

Nice video but Dwarf Fortress is a broken mess after 60 Dwarves.
@AndrewFullerton2 жыл бұрын
If you're having frame rate issues you might want to consider lowering your fortress claim's size when you're embarking. If you're just talking about the fortress falling apart, all I'm gonna say is get a good manager and learn to love work orders
@RasCricketSmallAxe2 жыл бұрын
@@AndrewFullerton Its not the framerate. I mean the sheer management of that many Dwarves is kinda broken in my opinion. the amount of menu diving to read what the heck just happened, locating Dwarves, etc = For me, the fun came to a screeching halt at about 60 dorfs. To each, of course, their own, I just think the gameplay itself is ill-affected after a certain point, the number of dorfs specifically.
