It always sucks why they never say WHY a show gets canceled. It makes it seem like there is no good reason for canceling a movie after a trailer. A trailer means there was a whole script and some animatic work. That is a bunch of money down the drain.

I'll always think that it's for political reasons, like The movie is about Victor a gay Russian, Russia is at war now so it's dangerous to let that kind of movie out, Besides covid, and so many years of wait maybe they thought it won't be as successful as originally it would be

Someone who claims to work for MAPPA anonymously came forward and said that the short answer as to why they cancelled it was bc of two things: greed and homophobia. They were very adamant that we do not believe any claims about COVID being the cause of the cancellation or script rewrites or what have you. There was no mention of the war between Russia and Ukraine. In fact, they said that the movie was almost completed all the way back in 2022 before just being left behind to collect dust. Ofc, we should take all of this with a grain of salt, but after it’s already come out that MAPPA treats it’s employees pretty poorly, I wouldn’t doubt it.
@parkchimmin79138 ай бұрын
Also, knowing MAPPA, their staff is probably overworked as hell since they’re taking on so many projects. They’d rather have their staff work on more popular animes like JJK or Chainsaw Man because it’s probably their main money makers rn.

It's genuinely so sad :( Also I took a look at some of the comments from Japanese fans on the cancellation, it seems that the leading theory from jp fans is the Russian figure skating scene having drug scandals in the years since YoI first came out, as well as the Russian/Ukranian war later on. Saw a lot of comments in Japanese about those theories, which kind of surprised me because I have seen zero people talk about it in english, most of us just assumed it was something to do more internally with MAPPA.
@YoruStrauss8 ай бұрын
I also wonder whether that's one of the main reasons. Like I'd be a bit surprised if it would be allowed to release a media that paints a certain country or characters from a certain country in a good way right now. I'm still surprised at Alya-san being released but the setting there is Japan and Alya is half Japanese so maybe it smoothens the matter somehow while in Ice Adolescence the setting would predominantly be St. Petersburg I guess. Side note: I'm not saying whether this 'cancel culture' on the country in media is good or bad, I understand people's reasons to support or not support it, right now it's basically just a fact.

I thought about the fact Victor being Russian to be a bit problematic these days during a rewatch. Tensions are high. Perhaps that did have (a tiny) something to do with MAPPA officially scrapping the project.
@crownofeunoia19078 ай бұрын
Considering that Victor was born 1988 and Soviet Union fell in 1991, that is impossible (yes, it had been confirmed the series took place in 2016). The movie would have been in 2006 since he was 17 in the trailer and male skaters usually start their skating careers in the Senior Circuit the year they are 18 or turn 18. Skaters like Russian Yuri are exception to the rule because his skill level was too high to stay in the Junior Circuit.

I've had an interest in ice skating since I was like 7 years old. I turn 26 tomorrow. For awhile, my passions for the sport dwindled because I was never able to get an opportunity to actually try skating. Then Yuri On Ice came out, and the love I had as a child came back even stronger. The show was the perfect amount of romance mixed into a really intriguing plot about the Grand Prix. After finishing the show, I started watching competitions, starting with the Olympics. I got to know about a lot of really awesome skaters, and I was even able to push myself to try ice skating for the first time in 2017. Skating as a sport ended up meaning a lot more to me than I thought it would, and waiting for Ice Adolescence only kept up my excitement. To know we won't be getting the movie after literal years of waiting is disheartening. But the memories made up until this point were certainly magical.

Prior to the anime's release, I had depression for a few months in 2016. Then came "Yuri on Ice." I didn't start watching the series itself until after the first episode premiered but when I finally did, there was no turning back. Hell, that anime was the reason I created an account at Crunchyroll so that I could watch every new episode. This anime gave me a reason to look forward to something, I was that invested because as I get older, I become more particular with my selection. While I was sad to see the show end, I was happily looking forward to a potential second season and equally felt the same when the first teaser trailer came out. I was like "Finally! Something new to look forward to!" The rest, as we all know, was history.

It was 2020 everything felt sad and unreal and suddently we had full on beautifully animated scenes of Viktor skating and not just that blue, still, cold poster to look at. Everything felt so real, old fans on tumblr started to pop up out of nowhere and I've never felt more glad to be part of a fandom. Everyone was sharing their experiences watching the anime. I felt a rare type of closure. We don't know the details behind this decision but part of me believes in the same fandom that I met in 2016, full of extraordinary talented people, that someone will make the movie (like an unofficial animation project) and we will all meet again in the comment section:)

yuri on ice was one of my very first anime and the one that rlly made me dive deeper into the medium. i remember being uncertain abt my decision to start the series until i heard history maker and realized that, yea, i was going to love this. yoi is also the only sports anime i’ve seen (after many years of enjoying the genre) that has a queer couple at the focus of its narrative. seeing that at a time when i was still figuring out my queer identity was incredibly important. despite the horrible fumble of this franchise by mappa, victor and yuuri will live in my heart forever. see u next level :]

I became a fan. of a series last summer on the recommendation of a friend. I was home alone during summer break. I found the show to be very entertaining and cute. However, hearing the news of the movie's cancellation made me feel sad and heartbroken. The worst part of the situation was that I had to inform my friend about the news. He is the biggest fan of the series. I couldn't help but feel a little down when I told him about the movie.

We're not even halfway into this year, and somehow it has already proven to be one of the worst years for modern pop culture. The death of the internet's favorite grandma, the death of Olivia the corgi, and now what can be perceived as the death of Yuri!!! ON ICE. This year has been just absolutely amazing so far, hasn't it? At least we finally have some kind of closure to the series.

Still processing but rn im big sadge bc YOI was the first anime I ever watched... it was THE anime that got me into anime (and fandoms and many other things like city pop music, fanfics, and even exploring video editing and other creative outlets) and i myself was ice skating a lot at the time and i just related to it on so many levels... so YOI will always have a big place in my heart and my heart goes out to all the fans feeling all the range of emotions in the wake of this news

Yuri on Ice changed my life. Episode 7 was the beginning of me realizing that queer media just "hits different" which led to the eventual realization that the reason for that is that I am queer lol. At the ripe old age of 27. I'm sure I'd have gotten here eventually but this show was the catalyst and I'll always hold it so tightly in my heart.

I actually didn't wanted to watch this video after seeing the title wanted to stay delusional. Kinda knew there was no hope but still believed they were going to release the movie as long as we waited. Yuri on Ice gave me the courage to return to my chilhood dream which was figure skating. Made me believe that I can return and continue doing it even after a long time. This is really devastating and I don't even know if I should be sad or mad. Guess it will be all crying for me tonight while watching Yuri on Ice. But still I feel better seeing you guys here and that I wasn't alone waiting all these years.

I watched Kictors videos about yuri on ice. I don’t remember when this was but I saw her on my KZbin feed and I clicked on the video. Although I had NEVER watched anime before, let alone a male romance, the videos made me so overly excited I decided to download Crunchyroll and borrow my brother’s account to watch it. Hearing this news made me just as emotional as kictor was. I loved the show so much I decided to start watching other shows. Like attack on titan and Jjk and love is war and just so many others I can’t even go into detail about. Kictor you’ve really changed me for the better. I personally am a huge fan of yuri on ice. And I was so excited about this, just for it to be ruined by this cancellation notice. If it makes you feel any better I’ll come curl up in an ball and weep over the cancellation notice with you ☺️

We all knew it was never gonna actually happen, but the fact that the April fools day prank for 2024 from Duolingo was Yuri on Ice related (and brought back a tiny kernel of hope) somehow makes this sting a little bit more than it would have

YOI changed my life, too. It sounds weird maybe, but it was the one piece of media that made me realize that as a guy, I liked guys way more than I was willing to admit previously, especially romantically. I made a 15 minute mini-amv compilation to work through my feelings after the show, and that's still on my channel even. Uploaded on valentines day too, haha. But it wasn't the catharsis I had thought it would be. It took another month and a half to admit to myself that I was bi with a preference for guys. Another month and a half later I came out to my mom, and then in June of all months to my best friend. Ironically he had come out to me 3 years earlier, and so he invited me to a gay youth group he was a part of, and those two years in that group gave me some of the most memorable and formative moments of my life. It's funny because I just had this feeling today, like "yeah whatever happened to the movie, let's check the website", and saw the cancellation announcement. I cried immediately, read some twitter comments, and then found your video. Sad to see that it's cancelled now, but I'm on the same copium as you that eventually, the project might get picked up again, or at least we'll get some leaks... surely... It's weird because this feels like there should be closure and it's time to move on, but I don't think YOI is a thing you move on from when it has impacted your life so deeply. It'll always move with you, secured away in a special place in your heart 🙂 Thanks for the video, and for providing a space for me to vent this ❤

YOI was unique and special in so many ways, and I'll never forget the experience of watching it during its release. After years of skimming through different highschool sports anime, YOI came with an adult setting and characters closer to my age. Yuuri still remains the character I relate to the most in all the media I've consumed. So yeah, I'm still in love with the show despite years of no official content, and that's not going to change anytime soon. Sometimes the stars align for projects like this to be picked up again, it might take another decade, but who knows?

I discovered Yuri On Ice last year. I wasn’t there for it in its prime because I was a little kid and the only anime I watched was Glitter Force and Pokémon. I watched it last spring because I heard it represented the LGBTQ+ community in a positive way and I got excited because I had never seen that actually happen much in anime. I binge watched the show and watched it as much as I could even though I had a busy schedule. I discovered it in late spring, and watched it at least 8-9 times before 2024. It helped me discover my love for watching figure skating, and so I watched so many old Olympic videos of the best skaters from the 80s, 90s, and 2000s. It made me want to learn all the history and rules and what it’s like to live as a figure skater. Through this show, I found a documentary about Johnny Weir, and how he started when he was 13. Maybe I could start skating late too. Now I’m skating. I’m not good enough to compete like Yuri and Victor, but I’ve performed a bit and I hope I can get there someday soon. I was holding on to hope for this movie to come out, and I was so excited, checking every week for updates on the website. I wanted more content from this series and to be able to meet more fans and to be able to see more skating and see more from the characters I love so much. I know all this sounds super dramatic, but thank you for letting me say it all.

After discovering it in 2021, Yuri!!! on Ice is the show that got me to start writing fanfiction! I’ve now posted over 300K words worth of material for the fandom and it’s been really amazing to see how many folks there are still creating/consuming content around our favorite ice husbands 😭😭😭 I, too, am holding out hope for some kind of consolation prize for this let-down. Your mention of an AMV would be great…really, I’ll take anything at this point Also, new subscriber here - looking forward to checking out your other videos!

Bro I'm genuinely so sad. Like as a gay man yuri on ice was litterally life changing it was the show that finally made me think about my sexuality. I litterally had my gay awakening becuz of this show. Yuri on Ice even though it got screwed over both the creators and the Fandom it will always have a dear place in my heart and I'm just so sad to see it go.

I'm really angry, I already hated mappa, now I think I hate it even more. They've been fooling us all this time that it's coming out and now they're saying they've canceled the movie.They should at least release the manga or just postpone the jujutsu kaisen and release this good movie. So they can at least sell the animations they've drawn so far to another studio.
