I remember ice crackling like that when my dad and I were fishing for trout many years ago. I hightailed it to the truck and didn’t return lol. My dad, being the wise and experienced one, fished until he caught his limit. Since then, I’ve learned the ways of growing ice. Being more of a geologist now and understanding stress fractures, I shake my head at my younger self response. Thanks for the memory retrieval. Tight lines and Happy New Year!!

When perch are finicky like that, which is more often than not the case here in MT where I fish, I use a glow Swedish pimple and I flash the glow strip with a digital camera flash so it glows hot. We use eyeballs as bait after we catch the first one because the eyes reflect the glow of the pimple and we don't move it at all we just set it right off the bottom laid sideways on a bucket so we can watch the strike indicator and not move it even a whisker until we set the hook. That is the best way I have found to catch perch when they are being super picky and slow.

Maybe do a sonar vid, if you can. Be fun to check it out. Great vids always. Nice perch.

Decent sized perch. What were the parasites' on those trout? Remember the first time I tried ice fishing. Every time the ice would groan I was looking at the shore and wondering how long it would take me to get there.
@spiltmilt3 жыл бұрын
The parasites are a species of copepod I believe.

Haha it's funny to hear this reactions it would be the opposite in the Northeast. Perch are pests compared to trout with most of us (Not everyone would agree here)

That still looked like a fun Christmas day even though your perch haul was much lighter than previous years! I'm glad to know there is safe ice out there though, I'll be up there next week for a couple days. Do you know if the north end of the lake had safe ice? Thanks
@spiltmilt3 жыл бұрын
I'm not certain about ice conditions on the north end of the lake.

lol barking dogs... always. I swear unless I go hiking into a mountain lake that is completely empty it's like you can never get away from that. I swear every single person in the world seems to have a dog these days.
