The second alto player cracks me up every time I watch this, the fact that he's barefoot, and also his reaction to what the tenor soloist does at 2:20. Fantastic.

I had the fortunate opportunity to see this band live, nothing in this world like it, and I am not using that as a figure of speech, there is literally, absolutely nothing like it.

This tune sold me on the lab 2009 cd. Great arrangement, monster bass bone, great lead trumpet sound, all around greatness. Damn.

As a former trombonist and jazz player, love the arrangement and the complexity of the music. I miss the emotion and interacting with talented musicians.

@MrPovedajr From Steve Wiest: Thanks! (I blush) I wrote this as a jaw-dropping "I can't believe they just payed that" style closer. It is based on my musical impressions of the Ice-Nine crystal from Kurt Voneggut's "Cat's Cradle" A must-read for relaxing bedtime fare:) Thanks, and so glad you dig the chart.

@Playapusdude From Lab 2009 until the present, all North Texas projects have utilized the highly regarded Neumann KM 84. This is a vintage microphone no longer available for sale by Neumann. It was replaced by the KM 184. Our engineer, Phil Bulla really likes the warm sound the original Neumanns got, and I agree! Thanks for your question! Are you into sound engineering?

@jeffbearpig: Thanks my friend! So glad you enjoyed those pieces. They were customized for the virtuosity of the One O'Clock bands I've had the pleasure of working with, so they are super-difficult. Good work on "Spirals", I wrote that for Neil's band on Lab 2008. - Steve Wiest

@claustraphobix From Steve Wiest: We had the fun idea of including something "Beatle-esque" at the end of this one. Since we already had the low-piano triad ringing forever (ala "A Day in The Life") we took Sylvester's (tenor solo) voice, played it backwards and put it in the background ala George Martin. If you play what we recorded backwards, you will decode the message. It doesn't say "Paul is dead"...but that's the idea. During that time BTW Sylvester's nickname was "Slyclops" FYI.

Very Nice bit Mr West. Never forget these are very much students. Havn't checked in on the 1 in a while, things are well in hand. I lived in Bruce hall in '83, the players I've watched mature, go crazy, get sane, take & give back over the yrs bring me joy and amazement. Where will these guys be in 30 yrs? (Sad, btw, no chicks nor enough color in the 1 here, not an ez thing to remedy)

Each semester we have auditions, and the best auditionees get the gig. Such a deal! Over the years since I have been here, I have had the good fortune to work with a very diverse bunch. Check out the band over the years on our website at theoneoclock (dot com) and you will see great things. Thanks! - Steve Wiest

Steve Wiest (the trombone soloist) is in a separate room, because that setup allows him to better hear the improve before he plays it w/o the background interference of the other band members. It also allows him to solo from a more pure and uninhibited tone.
