My father filmed a breakup of the White River in SD in the 60s. Caught the first water over the ice to breakup, to flood stage with ice chunks 2+ foot thick making huge trees bend over. Awesome on 8mm film.

I have never heard of an ice out living in sunny west Australia, so that was amazing to see, such a good quality picture, thank you so much, what time of the year does it happen and how do you know when it is going to happen?

Late March, early April. The temps should be in the 50's and a rain that is significant (2" or more). I pay real close attention when these conditions arise. I also drive ahead of the flow and wait for it to arrive.

That 1st view looks like Horseshoe Bend. I lived across the street.....it sounded like a water fall during ice-out.

I live on the river so I can see it. when it happens I can go down river and watch it as it happens. Sometimes you can tell it is coming by sound. Sometimes there is a slight breeze. Sometimes there is a fog that rolls in front of it because of the temp difference. The water /ice is colder then the air temperature and if there is enough humidity in the air it will show at that transition. I always have an eye on the river on warm rainy days.

HA I don't think so, I've seen a micro ice flow take a fellow kayaker down river. He was just getting into his kayak and was about to put his sprayskirt on the cockpit rim and it came through he and his kayak got out of the flow quick but he banged up his shins pretty good doing it.
