I used to plow a lake front town on the southern shore of Lake Michigan. Most of our roads were like that. I slid off the side of the road going up a hill. Had to wait three hours for the wrecker to pull me up, best nap I ever had in a truck. Another time I hit a drift that was half sand mixed in the snow, it slammed the truck off the road into a utility pole,it sheared the pole at ground level. But that pole kept us from going into a ditch that went about fifteen feet down. I did the right thing ,called the police and made a report. Then when I got the road plowed the snow covered the base of the pole and my tracks, couldn’t even tell what happened.

I'm glad you guys are okay! I could see it coming and you could too. Ice sucks. I was an essential employee at the plant. I had my route planned around the least hills and off level roads. One road I took simply because it had a nice wide grassy berm to get traction in. I'm not going to say there wasnt a crease in the center of that bucket seat. One day a propane truck got sideways ay the top of the hill beside my house. That made the decision for me. I wasn't going anywhere. When I was in college I "babysat" a friend's Harley. He was leaving town for about a month so he told me to ride it. I did. The Sunday morning I left out it was 70 degrees, clear and sunny. I rode to my friends house about 60 miles away. It sucked. The thing was a chopped hardtail that was nowhere stock. The most aggravating thing was the shifter was on the side of the tank. Did I say it sucked? You felt every gum wrapper, cigarette butt and pine needle it the road. Afternoon came and it started to cloud up. I headed home. These are mountain roads folks. It started raining, the temperature dropped and sleet arrived. It got down to 28 degrees and rained some more. Halfway home there is a curved bridge on Hwy 31. You folks near Nashville know it well. The roads were okay but I knew that bridge was going to be ice. I was right. I started at the top of the two lanes on my side. By the time I got to the other side of the bridge I was ready to feel the curb and guard rail on my body. I made it. The euphoria was short lived as I still had a ways to go to East Nashville. I was soaked and my gloves, jeans jacket and pants were frozen stiff. I made it back to my apartment in probable hyperthermia. I had a long staircase up to my apartment and I crunched all the way up. I slowly thawed out and vowed to never ride that crazy bike again. I can laugh about it now but I saw no humor in the situation at the time. I never rode another Harley again either. Damn that sucked! LOL! Once again I am glad you are okay. If you are going to wreck a nice slow motion one..... still sucks! Cheers Terry

I have a story about the sort of language that pops out during an emergency, About 4 years back I was on my way home from work when someone decided that they were too good to stop at a red light. Fortunately I had a dash cam that caught them passing a string of stopped cars before entering the intersection on a red light. They hit my service truck in the right rear, spinning me around and rolling me over. When watching the footage later I never said a word until I started to climb out. The cooler I had wedged between the seats popped open and dumped several gallons of ice water across my abdomen and lap. The dash camera recorded a sharp intake of breath followed by the most irritated "CRAPOLA" you've ever heard. I'm such a rebel... When my wife saw the video she tried valiantly to control herself but failed. She apologized profusely but couldn't help it. That shuddering "CRAPOLA" is now one of the alert tones on her phone. It gets better. In January of this year I went to the store and was sitting in my car looking something up on my phone when some old dude in a Suburban got his pedals mixed up. He did quite the burnout before losing control and crashing into me. He punted my poor old car completely out of it's parking spot. I heard the burnout and decided to record it but wasn't quick enough. I raised the phone only to see the grill of a Suburban coming right at me. I must've hit record just at the moment of impact. There is a loud noise but all you see is a bunch of blurred motion followed by a suburban passing by my window. There's a few seconds of heavy dead silence Followed by "HOLY COW!". My wife took one look at the video and about fell over. Apparently whenever I face danger I turn into Bart Simpson and my wife gets a new ring tone.
@HODGEPODGEDODGEGARAGE6 ай бұрын

Strange, the people who make the decision if you should go out aren’t the ones who do. In a perfect world the person in the seat should be able to make the final decision.

Note to self, never ride shotgun with Zane in a company vehicle...... They should have just done the main roads and nothing else. At least the two of you are alright.

Not being out there does not work, fire and EMS does not have a choice. I have had a few scary responses on ice driving a fire engine
@HODGEPODGEDODGEGARAGE7 ай бұрын
Oh, you're 100% correct. I was meaning "we" shouldn't be out there because of the rear wheel drive dump truck. There are a few 1 ton pickup trucks at our shop that are 4x4 with plow equipment. They should have been used instead. That was a bad choice from the paper pushers in the office. Sadly, others make the major decisions. Thanks for stopping by Jon. Have a great evening 🙂👍
