Ice Swimming: Finnish Winter Joy With My Ostomy

Ice swimming, or avantouinti as we call it in Finnish, is one of my favourite pastimes in winter.
In this video I show how I usually go swimming during the cold winter time. I like to wear a beanie and after swimming, stand on the deck in the cool air for a while.
Many people wear special ice swimming socks when they take the plunge. I am going to a buy a pair as well because as you may see in the video, my wet feet tend to stick to the icy stairs!
This is also the first winter I've been ice swimming with my ostomy. 😊
Note: If you want to try ice swimming, please ask your doctor if it suits you. Don't swim too far, especially if you're a beginner!

in general do you ever feel cold? let alone swimming in ice water -- you are not even shivering when you came out!! I think I am impressed but not sure???

Haha, I actually feel cold quite easily, I wear wool socks all the time. :D But after ice swimming when I come out of the water, I don't usually feel cold, and rather enjoy standing in the cool winter air for a while. 😊

@@iirislinnea well i guess there is only ONE way to find out and that is to try it. I am in Canada, so an icy lake or river is just as easy to find. if i could indulge on your time for one more minute ----- the first time you did it, did you just plunge in or was there monrhs of prep work/planning?

No, I didn't really plan or practise it. The first time I tried ice swimming, I went to a public sauna with my friends. So that first, we sat in a sauna, then took the plunge in the icy lake, and went back to sauna. But if you go ice swimming from a hot sauna, you should spend some time outside in the cold air before and after swimming in ice water, so that the change of temperature is not too big and sudden for the body. :) I had friends who had tried ice swimming before so they gave me some advice. :)

@@iirislinnea thx. i have all summer & fall to build up the courage to try. i think I will start in the fall by sitting in a fast flowing creek that is nearby & see how that goes once the temperature outside hits 15 deg C (59 deg F) & work down from there. Yikes.

Finnish people don't wear swimsuits in a sauna or for iced bath, they do that only if it's for KZbin.
