How do I "afford" all my cars????

From last week's video of me surprising my brother with his Land Cruiser, I got a few comments talking about how all the cars I own are expensive and I must be rich or something like that. I thought it was funny and made for a good opportunity to tell you guys the truth about spending an unreasonably disproportionate amount on vehicles and irresponsible management of finances. As you'll see in the video, both the Supra and NSX were/are financed and on top of that I picked up even more vehicles (the Land Cruisers) even before I had finished paying off the others.
Lately I've been wanting to make some videos about personal finance and maybe giving you guys some advice/warnings from my journey so far. Let me know if videos like this sound interesting!

Respect at everything you go through. The sooner you notice things and sooner you act upon your mistakes the better person you become. I thought this video was going to be a video about; "I lived with my parents until 40 and financed cars, follow my lead". So for the first minute or so I was expecting terrible advice. However, this video gave amazing advice to allot of young people. I am in my 20's and a millionaire, so here is my advice; If you can't buy it with cash, then don't buy it. For example, if you make 60K/YR, and can save 20K-30K of that in a years time, then you can go ahead and buy a 20K-30K car. Although id ask yourself if you really need it. When I was making around 60K/YR I was able to save up roughly 30K-40K of that a year because I was living with my girlfriend whom was making around 35K/YR. So together we'd bring home 90K roughly. So her 35K covered most expenses while my income was additional. Of-course we'd like to buy nice things and live a nicer life, so sometimes we'd spend a couple thousand dollars on more materialistic things. Because of that, I was also able to buy a home, a car, invest into business idea's, etc. Remember, when you acquire debt or increasing your living expenses you are stagnating your life. Unless you increase your income, without any deposable income you cannot invest into anything, and therefore, you'll stagnate. This is why most people are unable to start their lives until they're 30+, because they spend their 20's paying off debt, and most of that debt was them chasing a lifestyle they couldn't afford. Then when you're 30 you panic because you're running out of time, so you have kids, a wife, a home, and many other things, and then that's how you end up being 40+ with several kids and living paycheck to paycheck with a middle-class income. Then people wonder how 70% of households in the US live paycheck to paycheck. That is how. You waste the time you had, then when you run out of time you panic, and you never gave yourself time to do anything more. Financing for 5 years could lock up your life for 5 whole years, and for what, a car? Something to flex on people? Make sure you're making wise decisions. When you're rich you can afford 5 of your favorite cars, or you can sink yourself over one of them. Don't be dumb. Life is a marathon, not a race. Enjoy it, but don't try to live a lifestyle that you cannot afford. Financing makes people think they can afford a life that they can't. All of your peers are simply in debt. They're not ahead of you because they own nice things on loans. Don't fall into the trap.

So I am the complete opposite, I drive my parents used minivan, been saving since starting work, live at home and help pay my parents mortgage. The problem I have is to learn how to spend my money. Doing the wise thing at the wrong life stage doesn’t mean personal growth. I’m still figuring out how to enjoy my life as much as you enjoyed that Supra. There are lessons I still need to learn and I’m loving the self awareness and life experiences you share.

Ahh yes. I made the same mistake with my WRX in 2015 as you mentioned with your Supra. Same upfront cost as well, and of course repairs! I feel as if it's a common lesson all car enthusiast learn at one point or another, like you said being able to make the monthly payments isn't "affording". And as enjoyable as it is at first, looking back on the numbers and decision are not easy! I was lucky enough to learn my lesson by 2017 and dug deep to hustle and pay off any debt by 2020 - to then of course take on the biggest debt of a home .🤣I would say it's a little more tolerable though it comes with it's own book of life lessons. And though my dream car is also a white NSX, I definitely enjoy living vicariously through you more than financing one at this time. As always, keep up the great work with your content Frank! This video really hit hard. I'm 28, live at home paying my parent's mortgage. My mom had a stroke a few years ago and can't work so my siblings and I have been taking care of her while my dad is trying to work. I financed a Tesla and have 3 years left on the loan. I've went through the same thoughts you've said, Frank. Why didn't I just hold off on buying a car and just saved my money to better help my family and my future? Frank, I’m doing the same “mistake” as I’m typing this comment. I’m in my late 20s, got a job that pays enough to scrape by. I bought a 2020 M2 early this year before COVID hit. I didn’t buy it to show off, I bought it because it’s a safe haven for me. Now I’m maxing my Roth IRA and barely match 401k. I know it’s not financially wise to buy this car, but I did it anyway. It’s the worst financially decision I’ve ever made, but I know I’ll regret it when I get old if I don’t do this right now. Maybe I’m just trying to justify my decision. However it also acts as an motivator for me. It pushes me to look for better paying jobs, to do my own business on the side. Thanks for the video and reading the comment section makes me feel that I’m not the only dumbass that’s doing/did it.

The way I see it you're investing into your future and retirement. It's about balance so if you want that M2 then get it. You can't carry your money after you're gone so live a balance life. I own three cars and get crap from friends and family all the time but I don't care because I know I'm investing into my future and my passion.

It’s all about balance. To save for the future is to sacrifice the present. Cube isn’t being objective in this video - yes, he feels it was a waste of money. Every purchase in hindsight is monetarily less optimal than investing but it’s a fallacy to believe only money compounds. Experience compounds because you continue to talk about it. If he never bought the car he wouldn’t have the same friendships, the same hobbies, the same experience - I’m certain he’s met with many car people, talked about cars, or helped friends with their cars and that’s all built on the foundation of wasting money buying into his car.

Hey Frank new subscriber here. I gotta say I found all of this advice so meaningful and impactful. I’m in a similar boat but to a less extent, I owe around $24,000 on a Mustang GT and $30k on my new truck. Making around ~$100k a year I still feel guilty for owing and not owning my cars, I want to own them but just spent over $80,000 putting 20% down (with more and more costs adding slowly) on a house and feel really stupid for owing so much on such a volatile income and lifestyle (KZbinr). Your advice is really inspiring me to make the right choice and start putting my money into appreciating assets and not cars I don’t really need. 33 yo asian male here in the damn state of NJ and just stumbled upon your channel it’s refreshing that I am not the only person to make the same mistakes. That may sound kinda bad but I mean it in the best way possible. I’ve made the same mistakes when I first graduated college and got a real job I spent all my money on honest useless crap and wonder where I would be now if I hadn’t. But like you I did smarten up. I saved I invested and at 33 and 7 houses later with the joint effort between my mom and siblings we can retire early and enjoy life. I am able to nearly 70% of my income I get from work and have a nest egg for what ever may go bad. I attribute this all to my Mother for showing me the way and opening my eyes. I still make mistake but it’s no longer about can I afford a car I buy for how it can help me in the future and how it fits into my goals. Glad to see a KZbin individual who i can relate too both with values and upbringing.

What a comeback Frank. I gotta say, i was super happy to see you im my subscription box again. But this video - boy does it ring a bell with me. I am 27, from a very low middle-class family. Who am i kidding, we where scratch poor for years, but my parents where able to cover all of that before me. Ever since i started working, i learned a lot of lessions in regards to money. I have never taken any loans, or had to borrow money from banks, but i was damn near close. Two years ago my mom passed away, right after which my relationship was struggling. After we broke up at the start of this year, i moved back to my dads place, since he barely can afford living. Now, NOW i finally know the value of money. I can pay for our bills, be it phone, internet, services and what not, give him money for groceries that cover the whole month for both of us, and still have enough on the side to put into a savings account, and spend the rest on my dumb, expensive hobbies. Still, some months i can barely make it trough. I used to spend everything i had on my partner, renting an apt. too big for us, going out and eating out, just wasting money away... now that some scars have healed, i really know the value of money. I got to admit however, i do spend a lot on hobbies, since i never could as a kid. Sue me i guess. Anyways man, glad to see you return, your video really made me think. Just like back in the glory days, with all the advice that i still hold up to today. Keep it up man, i am glad you can be so honest :)

Glad u made this video. A lot of younger folks could learn a lot from this. I did the opposite of what you did. Helped my parents will bills and expenses and saved all my money whereas most of my peers spent their money on buying new cars, clothes, etc. I think it’s because my parents were supportive with me making my first big purchase (a 1k jacket) and then realizing that buying things didn’t give me happiness. After that, money was easy to save.

Frank, I first started watching you in the 4th grade with my best friend. This is amazing. I was 20 yrs old when I bought My supra and spent almost everything In my savings on it. In hindsight it was a terrible decision and I would never do that again now but I got lucky because the cars value has increased massively. Since then I didn't make another purchase with that mindset. I have minimal debt, saved a shit load and bought a nice house and my Supra is paid for. I didn't get into horsepower wars and am happy with the BPU level. This video resonated so much with me especially the bit about guilt not helping parents. I share your pain my friend. The mistakes I made when I was in my 20s and 30s has impacted me heavily now that I am in my 50s. I have learned from my mistakes and don't spend as frivolously as I did in the past. I respect your honesty. The one thing I can say though of my frivolous days is that I couldn't have done what I did then when I got older. I still probably would have done some of the same things but just tamed it down a bit and invested more.

This is a very insightful video Frank, thank you. My journey mimicked yours a lot - bought my dream 2011 E90 M3 five years ago, convinced myself I could make the monthly payments since I got a new job at a big tech company, then only years later, reflected on the missed opportunity where I could have invested all that money (and interest!). Definitely learned my lesson and now that I’m 31, I barely drive the M3 anymore but it serves as a good reminder of not putting short term fun over long term stability.

Stumbled across your video this morning, only to see KZbin suggested this one. You kept it real and I respect your honesty. Been there myself only difference is that I never took on debt. Hey Frank - I first subbed to you when I first started lifting back in high school for your fitness vids, but later on down the track found that you were not only a car guy, but a JDM fan too. I'm 23 now and can definitely relate, I'm only just starting to sort my finances together after years of putting my entire income into my drift cars. It's a weird thing that few understand, especially when you grow up loving cars. Especially in the Japanese scene, these cars are becoming more & more scarce and (luckily) as a result, are increasing in value. I can't help but feel that these years will be my last chance to own the cars from my childhood - and I'd like to look back on those fond memories in the future, regardless of whether or not cars are still a part of my life. I used to watch your videos 5-6 years back when you were doing mostly fitness vids with your hardcore 10x10 squat workouts and what not and I remember being really motivated and inspired by your discipline in that regard. During COVID, there's been so many great cars being sold because people couldn't afford them anymore that I was so tempted to pick one up. Your Supra video is how I found you and the lesson you taught me there is being satisfied with what we have. I still share it to all my friends who are into cars or this upgrade culture and we all relate. Thanks for reminding me that I shouldn't get the car I don't need. I'm in the midst of buying a house in the next few months and all I want to do is play fast and furious. You're fortunate enough that in the past you didn't have to worry about any responsibility when it came to bills. If my parents continued to pay all my bills indefinitely, I would have splashed out endlessly on cars. I think it forces you to grow up and mature when they burden you with responsibilities. I can relate to this so much. When I was 23 I bought a 40k truck, used the equity i had on that truck and bought a 60k truck. Well Frank, you were young and it was just right that you'd live your life back then. If your parents would have forced you to pay the bills for them, you'd probably resent them. Now you help them because you want to, and this is what really important is. On a side note I remember reading posts on Instagram about a friend of mine about how perfect her job was... I discovered last week that she almost had a burnout and is looking for another place to go. It's so true that social medias are just the surface of our lives.
