The last 10 laps of the thrilling battle between Gil de Ferran and Kenny Brack at the Rockingham, UK Speedway that went down to the last laps. The return of the 'Indy Style cars' to the UK. The FedEx CART Series had an awesome European double header at Lausitz in Germany and Rockingham on both ovals bringing the oval racing to Europe and met with great thrill and excitement. This is the first race after Zanardi's tragic accident that ended his open wheel career and also not long after 9/11. This was the first Indy style race in England since USAC raced at Brands Hatch Indy and Silverstone back in 1979.

I was there... in the grandstand on Turn 4... Remember shouting at the top of my voice that "De Ferrans coming back at Brack" as they raced down the back stretch. Still gives me goose bumps now!

I was there watching the race, which had been shortened due to groundwater being sucked-up through the track, making the track treacherous. The crews worked super hard getting the track dry and the teams did qualifying, engine changes and then the shortened race all on the same day. That they still put on a great show after the tragedy of Alex Zanardi the week before, was a testament to their professionalism. The golden age of the Indycar CART Championship. On another note, I also had the pleasure of meeting Justin Wilson in person that day, as he was walking around the paddock (I paid extra for paddock access). He was super friendly, despite me being a complete stranger asking him stupid questions. The news of his death today, fills me with sadness.

I was there in the stand at first corner; a young teen with my dad, attending my first proper motor race, and when Gil de Ferran crossed the line in first place he waved liked mad from his cockpit at the whole stand; the cameras didn't catch it in this vid, but the whole stand was going mad clapping and he acknowladged them, you could see his ecstasy, was a great moment!

@ayrtonsenna1989luke
@ayrtonsenna1989luke 2 жыл бұрын
Sadly it is now abandoned. It's due to be knocked down. ASCAR and CART ran the oval for the first years. Then national racing ran the road course such as BTCC, British F3 and Junior Formule, British Superbikes. It was most commonly used for Track Days for the public. You can see a few videos on this track in it's current state. Oval racing was never going to take off in Europe sadly.
