There aren't any households without power as all networks are redundant, so there is a second line providing when the first one is cut off. Also, the potential of all power plants in the system is enough to compensate for any plant to fail. So went the line went out, it had some short black outs but everything was back up and running within hours. As well for the Keflavik area as Grindavik.

LOL. So, "gos" means "eruption", and thus, the word was also chosen for soda, e.g. because it erupts when you open it. If you want specifically volcanic eruptions, that's "eldgos" (literally "fire eruption" :)
@ABRouleauville2 күн бұрын
I ran the article title through a few other on-line translators and the best one that came back was "The eruption cannot be knocked off the table immediately." - and if you read the article the meaning of the person quoted was don't say the eruption is over, but it is decreasing and we may have seen the worst of the lava flow. Two of the other translations that came back were almost as funny as the google soda reference: "You cannot get out of the table immediately." and "You can't knock the punch out of the table right away."
@ericfielding2540Күн бұрын
That makes sense now. The volcanic eruption is driven by dissolved gases, so it is very similar to a soda water eruption, only with liquid rock instead of water.

The visitors will not be able to use their own cars for sure, as that parking lot is now buried under lava. I think there are parking lots in larger distances. I additionally think that there will be shuttle buses from these lots to the lagoon. In the right of the drone picture ... I guess it's the South... there's another road if I'm not mistaken. The powerplant personnel has to be able to reach their working place too. So, that's for sure a way for the shuttle buses to reach the lagoon. Enjoy your vacation, and thanks for the update 👋🏻👴🏼

I am really amazed how hard they wotk to protect infrastructure. They seemedbto beva bit surprised as early as this erupted in the normal pattern that there was so much lava, to the point where the lava started to reach high enough to g et over the berm which wasca threat last night. The workers were up all night pumping water out of blue lagoon where they sprayed the berm to cool it enough to haul in gravel and start building it up about 4 feet which took them all night and into the morning. The dedication is wonderful. Report is that thr lagoon is open even with the limited parking and it will takeva few days to a week for it to fill back up after all the water used last night. Hopefully the estimates of the amout of magma in the system before the eruption is correct and it has discharged enough that it will be sleeping for a few years. There seem to be a few volcanologists whosre questioning if thst is the case since it erupted much earlier that expected and they feel that was more from the amount of magma than gases. These volcanologist said they feel that there was more magma than expected fir so early in the predicted eruption window, and that could mean that there is still deeper magma feeding the system and this may not yet be the last eruption in this pattern but there could be a couple more. Then there are those that thing the amounts are what would be expected if the magma chamber is getting low although they cannot explsin why ir erupted so early in the eruption window with very little warning.
@postiticeland8783Күн бұрын
It erupted early because the earth is weak after all the eruptions. The magma can reach through quite easily now

On Blue Lagoon, the translated statement I saw showed that they had cancelled all reservations until the 28th (inclusivement) and that thet will evaluate stituation when they come to that time. It di not state they planned to re-open on the 29th, just that thety were pretty sure to remain closed to the 28th inclusively.

Oh they are planning to reopen on the 29th. The only thing that will stop that is a major change in the eruption that threatens the direct area.

Is the surface above Svartsengi actually dropping about 230mm or 9”? That must create a lot of fracturing of the overlying rock with the up and down movement.

Surprised they have not built a helipad for bringing in tourists by air. That said, I thought they pumped a massive amount of water out of the lagoon for cooling lava. Can it recharge that quick there?
@duncanpatterson8730Күн бұрын
I'd imagine so, the power plant's hydro turbines are run from the geothermic bore holes, the Lagoon is supplied with the runoff from the turbines. So there is a constant flow of water i believe. It's the same for the hot water supply Grindavik, Vogar and Keflavik gets i think.
@vicki90272Сағат бұрын
@@duncanpatterson8730 Yes, the hot water (including water for home heating) for the Keflavik area (Reykjanesbae) comes from the Svartsengi plant. The Blue Lagoon was originally just a little lake of surplus water -- back in the 1970's there was just a tiny building where you paid a fee and showered and changed, no big resort!

Surely you can't just keep building berms higher and higher. Assuming these eruptions keep happening, the berms would become less stable. Not to mention the significant drop on the inside, when it does get breached will cause a very fast moving lava waterfall that will be unstoppable. By the time we get to the twentieth eruption I fear this defensive strategy may fail. In the long term it will be interesting to see if nature can indeed be held back.
@mark1236552 күн бұрын
@@peterwilson7532 Each eruption changes the topography of the land, and creates new low points where lava might flow
@postiticeland87832 күн бұрын
Well to be fair they do make the berms thicker as they raise them but they won’t be able to raise them to the moon
@vicki90272Сағат бұрын
Thanks for the update! After the lava has piled up against the berms, will future lava flows (if in same area) run along the top of the previous flows and contact the berms at a higher point? Seems like they will have to keep raising the berms.
@brucetidwell77152 күн бұрын
How high can they build the berms? Is there a practical limit?
@dustyrieck7939Күн бұрын
Hey professor Shawn I have a question, will lava flow like water? Flowing level, filling in the lowest elevations first?
@christopherrobinson7541Күн бұрын
Generally yes, because lava runs downhill. However, it can flow through choke points that cause the lava to pile-up. As it cools it can change the topography an direct flows away from low ground.
