Good details no one else is explaining, on KZbin in English. As a retired Earth Science teacher in Canada, I like your references to how it affects people. The chart shows 150 mm above the original level, which is 6 inches, then it drops to 200 mm below datum, 10 inches. Within about one day, it drops 16 inches. I don't know the horizontal distance for slope angle, but people in buildings at the power plant and water pools should have noticed the tilt. That was first in late Oct, then recently.

Please don't begin with apologies or self-deprecating remarks about your disorganized program. (I speak as a retired speechwriter.) You are giving all of us the great gift of your interpretation and knowledge. Make a positive of everything you do and say: "Many interesting things have happened since I last talked with you, and so here's a quick report." OR "I appreciate your interest and I have put together a brief update." That sort of thing.

Can't thank you enough for an even helpful explanation of events. I have sampled other channels here on KZbin that are alarmist and fake titles to get views and very much just repeating the news without the geology behind it like you give us. I found you early in this event and so appreciate what you do as I am just a lay person without much background in geology. Just what public schools taught me fifty years ago and normal curiosity over a lifetime.

Thanks as always. Heading out to visit my folks in Ogden on the Lake Bonneville bench next to Weber Canyon- your Utah geo vids are what first brought me to your channel. (I should check and see if you'vr uploaded any from your SoCal trip, where I am - no rush; this time of year is crazy.) But witnessing baby Pu'u O'o in 1986 gave me a lifelong fascination with more dynamic geology, so I'm right here tuning in to your unpaid volcanology classes, and very appreciative of all the extra work you do teaching while sharing your passion and compassion for the fascinating but locally extremely inconvenient subject. (And also, apologies to the Icelanders for being spectators to a local catastrophe; feel free to be geologically fascinated by southern California's fires and earthquakes. Because let's face it, the power of the planet is fascinating, we just don't want it to cause major harm to people and their animals and homes.

Thanks for the informative and helpful update- very appreciated!! Is it worth talking about dangerous gases that might travel to occupied areas? How do scientists calculate or estimate the amount of danger from gas emission? Is that tied to the type of volcano? *One tip: “J” is pronounced like an American “Y” in Norwegian and Swedish, so I would expect it’s the same in Icelandic. Ex: “Janda” is “Yanda.” As far as I’ve been able to find, you’re the only reliable and timely source of good info among KZbin channels, so please continue! TX! After recently watching some of your videos about giant-sized past eruptions, suddenly watching a live eruption that is much smaller, but still incredibly impressive, adds some jaw-dropping scale to those past eruptions. Double wow.

Thank you, Shawn, for your explanations of the information and data coming out of Iceland. I find it fascinating, as I myself live in the Pacific Northwest, in Portland, surrounded by volcanoes, and occasionally visit Mt. St. Helen’s, and see the land changes, post the 1980 eruption. I’ve also been to the Hawaii Volcano National Park on the Big Island, and seen some small vents with oozing lava. Exciting stuff to see firsthand with the live webcams. Again, many thanks!!

Thanks again for the update. Your efforts are definitely appreciated. So far, it's not looking too bad for the people of Grindavik, but we've seen how quickly things can change, so it'd be premature to celebrate yet. One thing's certain, this will be a Christmas they'll never forget. I'm sure everyone's best wishes go out to them. Icelanders tend to be quite stoical, and make the most of whatever life dishes out to them. I hope this fortitude stands them in good stead over the coming days, weeks, and months.
@teardowndan536411 ай бұрын
If the area rises again, not only does it mean that input is greater than output, but also that the magma that is chilling closer to the surface is being replenished with pippin' hot fresh stock to bring the temperature back up and prime the system for the long run. I'd imagine this also comes with considerable re-melting and erosion along existing channels.

Wouldn't it be expected that the initial bolus of magma would appear "evolved" since it's interaction with crust rock while forcing it's way to the surface would result in dilution/contamination of the source magma? Perhaps, as the eruption progresses, the magma will appear less evolved.

Thank you Shawn. I have a question; could you mark the other two recent volcanoes and show us on the map. Then my question is whether there are theories why the eruptions move to new locations. In this video it stated the magma is quite similar indicating it is from the same source. So why did it bypass the previous fracture zones which were established and still hot and more fluid?
