Iceland | Grimsey | Hiking to the Arctic Circle

Come with me to the Island of Grimsey, the Island on the Arctic Circle taking the Saefari ferry from Dalvik is a 3 hour ride. Grimsey is home to around 70 residents year round.
The island has a shop, restaurant, guesthouses, campsite, gallery, and a swimming pool, and of course the Arctic Circle markers, old and new.
We hiked to the original Arctic Circle marker and the to the Orbis et Globus (the sphere). The hike was flat but rocky and the elevation is pretty good at the end towards the sphere. The whole island is about 5.5 kilometers long so it's really hard to get lost here. Just be sure to know when your ferry is departing.
The Puffins leave the Grimsey to go out to sea in mid August, so sadly, we missed the Puffins by 10 days.
Flying into Grimsey at the end of August has to make pilots nervous, they drive a car up and down the runway to scare the birds off the runway, which doesn't last long as they go right back onto the runway, it was scary to watch.

Having lunch on the island is expensive, we had it in our plans but lunch was about $57 us dollars with a beer, per person.
We did not make it to the lighthouse at the other end of the island, as we stopped at the restaurant.
The ferry is around $31 us dollars each way.

How long round trip did it take you to walk? We are hoping to make it in the 2 1/2 hours from the airport, as we are flying to the island on Tuesday, March 26th, but the return flight leaves 2 1/2 hours after it lands. Your video is by far the most informative and I love how much info you give!

How long did the walk from the ferry to the sphere take?

It took us about an hour and I was walking with a bad ankle. Have Fun!

Was that an hour round trip? The "layover" on the island from the flight is only 2 1/2 hours total, so we are concerned we won't have time, but it looks like you had time to/from the ferry and that's a little further, correct? Did you return the same day on the ferry? @@travelwithtiffa7626

Yes an hour round trip ish depends on which route you take around. We had time for lunch and a drink too.

I have been watching several videos about Grimsey Island and yours was by far the most informative and best! Thank you. We are planning for a trip to Iceland in the summer and look forward to hopefully making it here. Good job and Thank You!
