An area of southwestern Iceland has seen its second volcanic eruption in less than a month, with lava sent spewing towards nearby Grindavik.
Two volcanic fissures opened north of the town breaching defensive walls and are putting nearby settlements at risk according to the Icelandic Met Office.

I wouldn't exactly say the protection wall "failed". To be fair, most of the lava is being redirected even though they didn't have time to bring it to the full design height. When part of the fissure opened up directly under part of the wall nothing was going to stop that. From what I can see that lava has yet to reach the town but that smaller fissure that opened up just meters north of the town is what burned up the houses. If the wall hadn't been there the main flow would've cut right through the middle of town and be flowing into the harbor now already.

It'd be quite terrifying to be sleeping, wake up and open your bedroom door to discover your house has been split in half with a veritable river of lava dividing the halves. Such a possibility would haunt me if I lived in a volcanically active area.

No. They actually did effectively hold and divert the lava flow away from Grindavík, saving most of the town. The wall didn't fail, however. This report is misleading. A second, smaller fissure opened up on the inside of the wall, which enabled lava to reach the town as there were no fortifications holding it back.

The magma came down hill via the fault. The fortification diverted or held back most out the lava and saves the west of town

A bit of magma continued down the fault and comes out at the small fissure eruption. This has entered the town at the new housing area to the east of the town centre, an unfinished home burnt first

@@hahyrningr not before it melted and took out a house, good little ants for trying. I stand by my statement and I STILL find the concept of a "fence" against pyroclastic flow funny. Daniel 4:35 KJV And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?
@hahyrningr
@hahyrningr 4 ай бұрын
@tikkiu7345 That is not what happened. Another fissure opened up on the OTHER side of the wall, where there was no fortification to stop the lava from reaching the houses in the first place. The wall held lava from the first fissure successfully. Also, there was no pyroclastic flow in either of those two eruptions.

@Wee162
@Wee162 4 ай бұрын
Kind of unfair. The volcanic activity on this peninsula woke up last year after 800 years of dormancy. 800 years. Many populated, highly desirable areas of the world are built on inactive volcanos and when they are dormant for hundreds, even thousands of years, it’s not surprising or risky at all. Geological time is very different from human time and humans can’t and don’t make decisions based on geological time.

Iceland sits on top of a major set of fault lines, like Japan and California. All these places were settled in before people understood the dangers of volcanic and tectonic activities. Today Naples sits on a volcanic field, across the bay of Naples, where Pompeii and Herculaneum got destroyed during the Roman Empire. It's just like, though, at least they have good evacuation and monitoring in Iceland, unlike some other countries. Everyone should learn from that.
