Iceland Volcano Flyover - The Lava Barrier At Risk And The Volcano Town

We are seeing the longest pause in volcanic activity so far but this is my first DJI Air2s flight over the Geldingadalir volcano but I bought a used drone last summer and it turned out to have some major problems so I recently bought a new Air2s Fly More Package. This video was shot last Friday during my fourth photo tour to the volcano but I managed to get many of the shots that I needed for my upcoming work from all over the peninsula and more.
I spoke a lot about the lava barrier in my last video and you can also find a map of the lava field in that one but this tour was pretty simple though so I skipped the voiceover this time.
The journey starts by Ísólfsskáli, the farmhouse that might go under lava soon and we fly north to the volcano, follow some of the lava streams and take a close look at the lava barriers. You can see Reykjavík behind the crater and Mt. Keilir in from of the city, to the left of the city is the town Vogar and west of it is KEF International Airport.
We end the tour in Grindavík, the town at risk to be hit by lava but we are however pretty chilled over all this now since it looks now as the eruption is coming to an end.

There are a few ppl. covering this volcano and aspects of Icelandic life and Gylfi IS one of the best of them, he 'downplays' his abilities and yet he does produce videos that could easily be included in 'big name' documentary productions, is that due to tech. innovations or skill? In any case WE are the great beneficiaries and I thank you Gylfi.

Stunning colour contrasts. Isn't Iceland🇮🇸 just the BEST? In this video, it's really clear how much the Volcano's 🌋 lava filled all 3 maybe 4 valleys. I REALLY WISH though, DIRECTIONAL ARROWS 🧭could be posted at the top, as some of the scenes change in this strikingly beautiful, well cone video, i.e. are we looking North & South ↕️, East & West↔️? Otherwise, this is fabulous video on such a clear day. Soon we'll see the smokey skies & flaming lava as the volcano erupts again; it will! Ragnar never fails to surprise. Reykjanes Peninsula. Our Iceland Volcano is far more interesting, FAR MORE FRIENDLY and far more SAFE. It's terrible the devastation to those poor people's homes & lives in the Canary Islands. Thanks again, wonderful photography & drone art.👍🏼

What spectacular filming you do! Thank you for showing us. Some of the shapes are really beautiful. Images around the 2:29 mark caused me to wonder if silversmiths have tried to replicate what they've seen in other lava flows. I don't understand what I'm seeing at 2:39 ?? Beautiful as some of the lave looks to me once it has stopped in its tracks, I found myself cheered by the acres of green tufts of grass and the sheepish signs of zoological life. I've watched this video twice and now I'm going to watch it again.

At 2:29 you are seeing a great example of ropey or Pahoehoe lava. To the left of that shimering section is dark blocky 'Aa-Aa' lava. The different textures form according to the temperature, viscosity and assoicated rate of flow for the lava. You get Pahoehoe when the lava flows more slowly and Aa-Aa when the flow is faster 🌋

@@jonathankarkut808 -Thanks a bunch. Now if I could only figure-out, what the major differences between Strombolian & Pyroclastic activity. Seems people are Debating that Canary Is. Eruption’s Flow.& I’m befuddled. It seems to me, there’s not much difference except the type of rocks & Lava that shoot out. And likely the temp of Lava too. But thanks 🙏🏼 Good explanation.

I agree, the red stuff sells :) but when I noticed that the eruption would literally rule my channel for a while, I decided to think into longer future as well because when the eruption comes to an end, it's also the end for those who had all their trust in the "red stuff" so I have to do my best and try to make footage that outlasts the eruption, and I hope that videos of this kind will help me a lot with that since the lava videos usually only live only for few days :)
@lantose

@@JustIcelandic You might also think about an intro with some figures as to the height of the lava at Nar’s East end now, (I believe that’s the side where the spillover occurred), vs what the topo reading was before the eruption and perhaps directions, etc. so people don’t get confused, as people love numbers and facts and could “wow” a few folks! Beautifully done. Thank you for creating this channel and showing us your amazing country. I’m curious, what’s the altitude of the drone at the intro?

Not sure, my first flight, was so busy with the manual camera settings :) that's all that matters to me :)

Your footage was stunning, your flight was amazing - when your drone flew towards the barrier looking towards Nattagakriki valley, I can't but think that is a tough valley to protect. The topography suits the lava I think, it doesn't have much height to gain and would be fed by a strong flow at that point, the broadening flow there would cause the lava to sneak higher and higher rapidly with not much space for constructing a strong, and high barrier...we will see.
@JustIcelandic

Yes you are right, one more splash and cool down chapter and the barrier will be very low but this was a priority shot for me because not even the media was showing the status there :) but it's way more to come since I had a great tour :)

@@JustIcelandic I hope the weather not too bad up there, I see there is a storm just off the north coast, I know you're used to all kinds of weather...I saw reports of heavy snow, is that true and is that early?

What a beautiful day you had. The video is great (especially if it is your first one). On technical note - if possible try to set the drone to slower max speed when panning as it blurs the image a bit. Also - the video seems to be 'finely chopped' (seen that on many others too) - I am wondering whether that could be made more smooth with different video settings. I really like the music.

Thanks for the tips! and you're right, I made several mistakes in this flight but the biggest one was not to maintain same speed in all shots, and I hadn't configured the gimbal settings fully, then I'm dealing with the fact that I'm underpowered and only using iMovie, meaning I have to upgrade my 27"Mac and move to Adobe software for colour grading since to this project is really taking me places :) but I look forward to similar projects in future since this air a format that fits me well, or so I hope :)

Around 2 km but it will accumulate first below the valley so it's safe for weeks, perhaps months :)

I would not be so sure if it's over, judging from the latest earthquakes but I will post an update today. End even it's stopped, it's still very hot up there and lots to see so I would go anyway :) but check my update later today ...
