The Cod Wars were a series of naval confrontations between Iceland and the United Kingdom. There were a whopping three of them and they definitely rank up there as some of the weirdest wars in history. Let's take a closer look.

Step 3 threaten anyone that thteatens you by saying you will leave nato and tell the americans to leave. Step 4 americans dont want to leave thus pushing the enemy of that country to back down! @@HistoryHouseProductions Icelandic history in a nutshell: Icelanders: "F' off, Norway - you're not the boss of us! We're starting our own country. With sheep, and trees, and.... okay, maybe not trees anymore, but sheep!" (hundreds of years and some Christianity later) Icelanders: "NORWAY, come back and stop us from killing each other!!!" (one Kalmar Union later): Denmark: "Thanks, Norway, I'll rule your remote territories with care and love." (one Napoleonic war later) Denmark: "IF I CAN'T HAVE NORWAY, ALL MY OTHER TERRITORIES WILL BE MADE TO FEEL MY PAIN!" (After some mellowing out time) Denmark: "Okay, I get it, you're upset and want independence. Let's make a deal... you get some self-rule, and we'll revisit this whole silly 'independence' thing in half a century, mmkay?" (Half a century later, and in the middle of World War II) Icelanders: "Dear Denmark - since you're so busy being occupied by the Nazis, we're just going to see ourselves out...."

@@HistoryHouseProductions A fun little loop of history: Laki had was one of the most catastrophic volcanic eruptions of modern times, unzipping a fissure dozens of kilometers long with lava fountains reaching over a kilometer high, and ongoing for much of a year, emitting over 120 million tonnes of sulfur dioxide (6x Pinatubo, generally considered a high-SO2 event) and an even more abnormal amount of hydrogen fluoride. It killed most of the Island's livestock, a quarter of the population, and Denmark even considered evacuating the island. The gases, however, reached far afield - so intense that people suffered from direct inhalation effects in the UK. The weather, however, was most profoundly effected. The Mississippi River froze at New Orleans and ice was seen in the Gulf of Mexico. A huge famine spread in Egypt killed millions, one sixth of the country's population. Crop failures were common in Europe as well. In France, this was a major contributing factor to the French Revolution. The French Revolution was ultimately responsible for the conditions that led to Napoleon's rise to power. The Napoleonic Wars led to the breaking up of the remainder of the Kalmar Union, and afterwards, Denmark clamping down on its remote territories, including Iceland. The ensuing backlash drove the Icelandic independence movement, which ultimately achieved success. In short, an Icelandic volcano indirectly led to Iceland's independence. :)

@@HistoryHouseProductions Another one you might want to do is the British invasion / occupation / subsequent American occupation during World War II. World War II actually worked out really nice for people here, particularly under the Americans. But the British invasion was such a huge bungling mess it's almost funny. The British were concerned that the Nazis planned to seize Iceland and use it as a naval stronghold. Germany had considered doing this, but had already decided it wasn't worth the effort at that time. The British started planning an invasion of Iceland to prevent the not-going-to-happen threat. The plan leaked - but the Nazis didn't care. The British sent a bunch of people who'd never been on ships before. Seasickness was rampant and one soldier was so miserable that he killed himself. When they arrived, they wanted to make sure there were no ships in the harbour, so they had a plane take to the air. The pilot mistakenly flew right over Reykjavík. Given that there were no airplanes in the country at the time, this immediately alerted everyone - including the German embassy - that a likely invasion was about to occur. The British took so long getting ashore that by the time they got there, a huge crowd of curious Icelanders was gathered around. The British had to *enlist the help of the Icelandic police* to clear the crowds away so that they could be properly invaded. ;) Iceland didn't put up a fight (one which it would have had zero chance of winning), and instead just took advantage of the occupation to get free infrastructure, jobs, and reliable customers for its fish. :)

It wasn't just about the fish; it was about the people who were being put out of work and a way of life their families have had for centuries; it was about the economic damage that the loss of those jobs meant; it was about the ecological disaster of over-fishing in the ceded water; it was about the fact that the last expansion of Iceland's fishing waters intruded into Britain's Exclusive Economic Area! I just discovered this channel. I just watched ALL of your vids ... in two days. I watched THIS vid 4 times. I LOVE THIS CHANNEL. MAKE MORE VIDS. Seriously ... you're 19 years old? And you know about the Katyn Forest? I know people who tell me they've studied WW 2 and they've never heard of it. You have a very sophisticated sense of history ... and humor. I expect you'll go far. Read Hunter S Thompson's stuff. And maybe P.J. O'Rourke's early stuff.

As you can probably imagine, they're pretty vague about what they actually do, but as far as I can tell most of it is decryption and communications interception. I guess the author of this video forgot to add that Iceland was increasing it's exclusive fishing ground because it's economy was based on fishing a lot. And they were getting less and less of fish because of other countries fishing more and more of them. That's the information I've found. Sorry if this video meant to be just entertaining not informative and I'm spoiling the fun. I just like the knowledge.

Iceland didn't steal anything. 200 miles is the international default of an Exclusive Economic Zone. Iceland was fully within its rights as a sovereign nation. British trawlers in Iceland's EEZ were closer to the arctic circle than they were to home, and were also wayyyy out of the UK's EEZ.

So, I wanna be that guy and point out one flaw. The vessel used to represent the Icelandic Gunboats in the video was the ICGV Thor which never saw service in the cod wars as it was commissioned in 2011. Aside from that and the mispronunciation of Reykjavik, good video!

Icelander here, great video. But... it's "Reykjavík", not "Reykahavic". But I like to see more, so I will subscribe your channel. Þoskastríðin (The Cod Wars) was actually used in our last presidential elections. When the candidate Davíð Oddsson (our "Ronald Reagan") attacked the history professor Guðni T.H. because he has been writing about the Cod Wars and was pretty neutral about it (just like a historian should be). That is, he was not particularly standing with Iceland (nor Britain) and because of that he "hated Iceland". But in the end, he won the election and Davíð was in the fourth place.
