Akureyri has been nicknamed the Capital of North Iceland. It is the largest town outside Iceland's heavily populated southwest corner. In this walking tour we explore some of the most remarkable locations Akureyri has to offer.
Information on the tour:
00:10 - We start the tour in Akureyri Park, which was opened to the public in the spring of 1912. It is the first public park in Iceland. The entrance to the garden is free, and it is always open. The garden contains a few wooden houses, of which Eyrarlandsstofa (to the right) is one of the oldest in Akureyri.
05:00 - The Akureyri junior college. This building is Gamli skóli (Old school) built in 1904.
06:23 - The white building with the red roof is St.Peter's Church (Péturskirkja), a religious building of the Catholic Church, built in 1912.
07:00 - A view over Eyjafjörður fjord, the longest fjord in North Iceland.
09:40 - The bells of the Church of Akureyri (Akureyrarkirkja) start ringing.
This Lutheran church was designed by Guðjón Samúelsson and completed in 1940.
13:15 - The red building to the right is Bautinn, a popular restaurant in Akureyri.
13:55 - Hafnarstræti, a shopping street.
18:06 - Hof, a cultural and conference centre. Hof is a cultural building designed for music and other performing arts, as well as facilities for conferences and meetings, receptions, parties and exhibitions.
26:55 - Akureyri theater.
27:03 - This sculpture is Sigling (Sailing) by Jón Gunnar Árnason.
34:16 - Brynja, one of the most famous ice cream parlors in Iceland.
41:20 - Nonnahús museum. It was the childhood home of the writer and Jesuit priest Jón Sveinsson, “Nonni” (1857-1944). Nonni wrote 12 children's books about his childhood in Iceland. He wrote in German but his books have been translated into more than 40 languages. From the age of 12 Nonni lived and worked in Germany, France, Denmark and the Netherlands. We can see a statue of Nonni in front of the house.
