A short walk around the Commonwealth farm in Iceland, a reconstruction of the viking age chieftain house that was discovered at Stöng.
00:20 - The sign reads: The Commonwealth farm is based on the ruins
of the former manor farm, Stöng in Þjórsárdalur which is considered to have
been abandoned after its destruction in the Hekla eruption of 1104.
To celebrate the 1100 anniversary of the Settlement of Iceland in 1974 it was
decided to reconstruct a manor farm from the Age of Settlement. The well preserved ruins at Stöng were considered to be very suitable on which to base a replica manor farm. Building work on the Commonwealth farm commenced in 1974 and it was completed three years later. The building was formally opened on 24 June 1977.
When building the Commonwealth farm every effort was made to replicate it as exactly as possible, according to the ruins of the farm at Stöng, and thus to try to give as possible of a dwelling of an Icelandic Chieftain from the Age of Settlement. The farm building itself is a kind of museum piece, illustrating ancient handwork and where this was not possible then imagination took over as is the case in historical novels. The Commonwealth farm is a living witness to the fact that the dwellings of the Icelanders of yore were well built and majestic constructions.

Awesome and incredible. Those houses were built for the Viking bosses and Viking bosses lived in those houses. Those houses were built hundreds to thousands of years ago. Iceland is such a beautiful awesome incredible country and has so much to offer. There is so much to see and do in Iceland.

Yes these are recreations of an actual viking house that was discovered. You can see inside the real ruins in my walk to Gjáin.

I was hoping to get inside but I was too early and it was closed. I want to visit Stöng next summer. Did you go to Gjáin as well?

Yeah it's so different from its nearby surroundings. Ok that often, you must love photography judging by your profile. I'd love to see them if they're available online somewhere. Any favorite places?

Gracias. Ha sido un paseo interesante e ilustrativo en este antiguo asentamiento vikingo. Tengo entendido que la isla fue colonizado por los nórdicos hace 10 siglos. Saludos!

Sí, tiene usted razón. El paso del tiempo se siente extraño. Hace mucho pero también no hace mucho.

These were built in 1974 but they are replicas of much older houses that were built in the viking age, a millenia ago.
