Indeed! its a great bind off. As far as i'm aware there no cast on, but it matches the matches the German Twisted Cast-On quite well. Hope that helps.

garter stitch tends to get wider (compared to stockinette). So test if it would be adviseable to use thinner needles.

Yes you're right it can get a little wider, so it's a good idea to check your gauge. I usually find that as long as it's not too much it's OK for a shawl edge.
