Loriot, actually Bernhard-Viktor “Vicco” Christoph-Carl von Bülow (born November 12, 1923 in Brandenburg an der Havel; † August 22, 2011 in Münsing-Ammerland), was one of the most famous German humorists from the 1950s onwards worked in literature, television, theater and film until his death. Loriot initially established himself as a cartoonist, later he also worked as an actor, screenwriter, animator, presenter, director and set and costume designer. In 2003 he was appointed honorary professor of theater art at the Berlin University of the Arts. After completing his art studies, Bülow produced his first works as a commercial artist and designed the characteristic bulbous-nosed man. From 1950 onwards, Bülow worked as a cartoonist, first for the Hamburg magazine Die Straße, then for the magazines Stern and Quick. Since then he has used the stage name Loriot. From 1967 to 1972, Loriot hosted the television program Cartoon for ARD's Süddeutscher Rundfunk, for which he was also the author and co-director. It was originally a series of international animated films in which he also included his own work and thus artistically left the narrow framework that the magazine medium had imposed on his drawings. Loriot's initially pure moderation from a red sofa increasingly became an independent humorous element of the program. Loriot later also incorporated sketches in which he himself took the lead role into the episodes. In 1972 the cartoon series ended. In 1974, Süddeutscher Rundfunk produced a one-off program called Loriots Telecabinet that foreshadowed some of what was to come over the course of the decade. In 1976, Loriot's Clean Screen was the first episode of the six-part television series Loriot on Radio Bremen, in which he presented both cartoons and mock sketches (the latter often together with Evelyn Hamann). The series is considered the highlight of his television work and made Loriot an integral part of German television, literary, cultural and social history. In 1988, Loriot shot the film Ödipussi as author, director and leading actor, followed in 1991 by Pappa ante portas. Vicco von Bülow died on August 22, 2011 at the age of 87 in Ammerland on Lake Starnberg. He was buried on August 30, 2011 in the immediate family circle at the Heerstraße forest cemetery in the Westend district of Berlin. A funeral service was also held for him in the Evangelical Lutheran St. Gotthardt Church in Brandenburg/Havel, where von Bülow was baptized on December 30, 1923. In 1986, Loriot publicly called for donations to renovate the church. The Art Directors Club mourned its honorary member in a newspaper ad with the words: "Dear God, have fun!"

The creator of these characters is Loriot, a brilliant humorist and subtlety. He entertained German-speaking countries for decades with sketches, movies and cartoons. Much of it is legendary and integrated into German usage. He held up a mirror to the (bourgeois) German post-war society, was satirical, very intelligent, but could also produce fantastic slapstick. Unfortunately, there is little of him to be found on YT. An example with mediocre image quality but english subs. This is so spot on. A friend gave me the advice once to never say to my girlfriend that I didn‘t do anything today. It’s a red flag, and you lose respect if you do. And I believe that he was right. „Oh, I read a book for a while, then I went to the bathroom to shave, then I went to buy some tooth paste, then I ate an apple, then I called my brother.“ Man, I‘m such a busy person. Or, as I as a rational person would put it, I did nothing. I don‘t participate in these games.

There is another sketch with the same (?) characters called Das Frühstücksei (The Breakfast Egg). It is very similar, but with a different dynamic. Loriot (real name Vicco von Bülow, 1923-2011) was a multi-talented person, he was a cartoonist, scriptwriter, director and actor. He did lot of sketches like this for German TV. He was especially noted for his exact observation of human behavior and relationships, especially between husband and wife. f you liked this one, you would love his live action feature film Pappa Ante Portas (1991). It's about the crisis of a married couple after the man is sent into early retirement. It's a hilarious movie with Loriot himself and his longtime working partner Evelyn Hamann in the main roles.
