When I first saw this fight, I was thinking, “Ok. Ichigo’s clearly no match for Aizen right now. Aizen has ascended to a level where he was able to take on 7 captain-level opponents and a lieutenant-level at once, and now he’s toying with 3 former captains (Kisuke, Yoruichi, and Isshin) who also were the only people in the World of the Living Aizen straight up warned the Espada not to fight. So, maybe Ichigo has a chance against Gin, right? After all, Gin is A LOT closer to Ichigo’s level, right?” But no, come to find out, there is a reason Gin kept out of the fight as long as he did. The fact that he could deflect Ichigo’s first hollow form getsuga tensho with one hand when even Ulqiorra in his base form clearly struggled slightly shows how insanely strong Gin is.

Fighting a shinigami is not the same as fighting an espada. As evident multiple times throughout the soul society arc, shinigami was a prestigious class compared to espada (Aizen controlled the king of hueco mundo, Tosen cutting the arm of grimmjow). Shinigami seems more intelligent and civilised while the espada (based on Hollows) is more bestial in nature. Ichigo fighting with top Shinigami captains, namely Gin, Shunsui and Aizen, have to contend with good battle tactics and not just pure power displays exhibited by the Hollow based Espada.

This fight made no sense, Ichigo’s hollow form didn’t power him up at all. His bankai didn’t speed him up at all.

Gin's just that strong, that's why Ichigo looks weak. A lot of people who watched the show but never took a few minutes to look into characters don't know this. Gin was basically the original Toshiro in terms of being a prodigy, he killed a third seat (someone relative in strength to pre bankai Ikkaku) when he was a child, then said the third seat was a pushover. In terms of Reiatsu and battle IQ among the 13 Captains at the start of the series, the only ones stronger than Gin are arguably Yama, Aizen, Unohana, and maybe Shunsui. In terms of actual combat and ability hax though, if Gin managed to catch any of those 4 off guard with Kamishini no Yari he would be able to kill them because of his bankai's poison effect. Kind of like how Shunsui's bankai is a guaranteed one hit kill on someone but it has conditions. Gin's bankai is similar in that regard. Gin was always insanely powerful but there weren't really any ways for Kubo to show it off. Even when Toshiro and Gin fought in Soul Society, Toshiro was fully committed to killing Gin and Gin was just toying with him the whole time. Just like how he did with Ichigo in this fight.

Also Gin is literally being sarcastic when he calls Ichigo scary. He legitimately tells Ichigo to just run away after their fight in fake Karakura town. Gin absolutely walked all over Ichigo in that fight and if you see it otherwise then you're delusional. Gin is absolutely stronger than pre TYBW Byakuya and Soi Fon. Both of those two sustained injuries from espada, Hitsugaya likely would've lost to Harribel had the visoreds not shown up, and Gin is stronger than those same espada. If he wasn't then Aizen would've simply discarded him just like he did with the espada.
