I think there is truth to the opinion that schools focus a little too much time on trying to get their students to memorize grammatical rules but the pendulum has started to swing far too much in the other direction. Now there seems to be this idea floating around that learning grammar is a waste of time and it's better to intuitively pick up on grammar while consuming content in your target language. There have been so many instances where I put off learning certain grammar in my target language and the moment I decided to be proactive and learn about something, it instantly started to demystify so many doubts I had. I think the key is a combination of the two i.e. learning a little bit of new grammar every day and then applying that grammar and looking out for it in the content that you consume.

I'm a native English speaker and I can't imagine why anyone would criticize your English accent. While someone might be able to pick out that English isn't your first language because you don't speak it exactly the way a native would, you don't have a strong accent at all. It just sounds like a variant of English, kind of like British English vs. American English. You seem like a pretty amazing young woman and I predict you'll go far in life.

Finally someone who gets it. I never understood the belief of learning language like a baby/child does. It makes no sense. An adult brain is not the same as a child's brain. Moreover, Krashen's paper was published in roughly 1982. If you think the literature/methods/research hasn't developed in 40 years, then go on ahead and keep learning via Krashen's method. Every single true polyglot I've stumbled upon has focused on grammar.

Babies learn through immersion, and it's currently the most effective method to learn a language, you just need to look up the ajatt community to find out how powerful it is while being a polyglot is amazing and inspirational, it doesn't mean that every piece of advice given is right You should acknowledge grammar rules and understand it but you definitely shouldn't be actively learning it While Krashen's method could look like someone crazy wrote the whole thing, it actually works That's how I learned English and that's how many people learned their second language too

She already knew French when learning Italian and Spanish which makes it a whole lot easier. Since the languages are related to each other (Romance languages, related to Latin) and have a lot in common. If you know one of them, learning any of the other can be accomplished much faster. She studied French for several years, if I remember correctly. So do not feel disheartened. Learning languages is a lifelong thing and there’s no need to rush, you just need to stay consistent with your studying and keep on going. You also need to actually put time aside for it, 5 minutes a day or 1h a week or every second week isn’t really going to get you anywhere. You need to spend a lot of time with it and immerse yourself in it as well. Don’t set unrealistic standards on your language journey either, because then you might get disheartened when you can’t reach the level you wanted as fast as you had set the goal. Give yourself at least 1-2 years, maybe more depending on the language, of consistent studying and you’ll get there. Good luck !!

I believe yes, grammar is very important, but maybe when some people say “Don’t focus on it”, they mean that because they think we’ll still be understood even if we don’t have perfect grammar? Non-native speakers of a language may make grammar mistakes such as “I learn English five years ago”, or something like that, and we still understand what they mean. I know I would likely still be understood if I didn’t use the correct verb conjugation or if I don’t gender a word properly, and I wouldn’t choose to speak or write in the language only if I’m absolutely sure that I’m using the correct grammar. However, I will continue to perfect any language I learn. If someone corrects me, I’ll try to apply it. Even with English being my native language, I still want to improve it by expanding my vocabulary and figuring out which ways of writing or wording things sounds better.

you're right! i like studying grammar in a basic form and then forget about it and just wait for my brain to internalise everything i've learnt so far. you can still be understood without perfect grammar, but you should do your best to learn some rules. however, focusing too much on grammatical details just to speak in a more ''correct'' way would defeat the purpose of learning a language, as it doesn't directly helps you with communication skills

thank you for your comment! it does, but more when you do it consciously. i'd advise you to work on the lyrics of a song until you understand everything and then you can listen to that song over and over again. after some point you won't have to do this because you'd be understanding the majority of the vocab already

thanks! it's because of all the mistakes you may be making, same happened to me with french because i couldn't make any progress after 3 years. then i just tried to realise my mistakes and fixed them (my mistake was not studying any grammar and trying to learn the language only by apps)

Hello iclal, i wanna learning german language less than 7 month and get a B1 certificate in goethe-instiute. And i get a A1 certificate، but it is not recognized. My question is: If I study in Nicos weg and some KZbin courses in my native language, talk to myself because I have no partner, listen and read, can i get a B1 certificate less than 7 month? I’m really stress and afraid that I will not be able to get it and speak the language I hope you can help me. Thank you for your help, i appreciate that.

Hi Jalal, you need to build up to B1 by getting as much help as possible, pick a tutor for example or make online friends who speak German, and get the right material that is officially recognized to get you to that B1 level in German. The B1 certificate that you want will test many grammatical rules in addition to you being able to present your German in a structured way. KZbin "courses" and Nico's Weg you can do in addition to practicing with a tutor, who can correct you and who can pick the right materials for you. If you don't want a tutor, you need to do this research by yourself.

@@Sunlives Thanks a lot. I was thinking of taking courses with a tutor for levels A2 and B1 to help me practice speaking and help me correct mistakes. I think participating in an online course with a tutor will be more helpful and speed up the learning process, while the nicos weg course will be useful. do you have the same opinion as me?

@@Hamajalal5775 I think so. If you have the opportunity, I would also plan a visit to Germany when you are close to B1. Nothing is better for language learning than being in that country, and it will keep you motivated. If you need that B1 certificate, I would definitely take a course to guide you and do stuff like listening to podcasts or watching German Netflix in your free time. I studied to C1 and speak German very fluently. Honestly, B1 is super easy. It seems hard when you haven't had enough exposure. My advice, use lingq everyday. Do the 60 mini stories 2 times. At least 2 stories per day. Use glossika for 2 hours per day constantly adding 200 new rep sentences per day and reviewing 200 rep sentences per day. Every day. I have done 550 hours of glossika and 200000 reps. I would also use italki 2 times per week with a teacher who gives feedback. But I wouldn't start until A2. I did italki for 3 hours per day. I would also take a Goethe's course. Intensive group class for 3 weeks A1, 3 weeks A2.1, 3 weeks A2.2, 3 weeks B1.1, 3 weeks for B1.2. I would also do B2.1, B2.2 and B2.3. I will guarantee B1 after doing the above. I would also supplement with KZbin videos by sprach coach, deutsch mit Marija, Natalia etc.. So many of them. At least 2 hours per day. My German was a super high B2 in around 4 months. I did 2 intensive courses per day. So averaging 10-12 hours of exposure per day.
