Loving that TI still gets a mention in this day and age. My primary interest is in computers and just got back interested in radio in the last few years. I've supported the Texas Instruments 99/4A computer for 40 years. The 705 contains a TI networking chip and TI 320C55 Digital Signal Processor :-)

I own an ICOM IC-7200. It was my first amateur radio. Not exactly man-portable, but built rather rugged. Takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'. One of the features that attracted me to the radio was the built-in sound card so that only one USB cable would be necessary for cat control and audio input/output. It also had mostly analog control knobs, and not too many of them, also very good for a newbie. It too is billed as a "portable" radio. The ICOM IC-705 does not appear to me to be a very ruggedly built radio to used in portable work. Please correct me if I am wrong. My idea of a good portable is one that is resistant to dust and moisture, at least somewhat, has solidly built control knobs and buttons that don't break or fall off easily. The case should have some kind of padding or cushioning to protect the radio from at least little bumps and falls. The radio should also be shock resistant on the inside. Being out in the field, a a little radio like this would be prone to falling off a tree stump or rock. All you have to do is trip over the antenna coax and oops! I don't expect a military grade radio, but may I should for its price. I think that is not too much to expect from a 1200 dollar radio that is marketed as a portable radio.

Yeah I know I'm late, but great video Josh !! I received my 705 about 3 weeks ago and just now ordering my Pi. Tried it on a Pi-zeroW but no joy. Just bogged down, so I need at least a Pi3B+. I was worried about the heat on the Pi4. I had originally planned to use the USB cable for just the GPS data and the WiFi for audio and CAT control. But the lightbulb went on and said "WHY?". when all can be carried by the single cable. Thanks for that awakening. May eventually run the Pi and the 705 off a 13.8V LiFePO4 battery, but for now will use your setup with a 5V power pack for the Pi and internal battery for the 705. Thanks again, GREAT video !! Man, if I can save up enough cash, I WANT 705 to be my first QRP radio. The fact that you can have GPS time and location, CAT control, and audio input / output with a single cable is absolutely insane. I wish my 891 had a built-in audio interface lol. Then maybe I'll get the qrp amplifier for the G90 / X5105 and have full QRO. 73 de W8IJC

FYI: You need to be aware that there are two main types of micro-usb cables. One is for charging a device and the other is for transferring data between devices. Many offer both functions in one cable. In this case, I use a dedicated micro-usb data cable. You can find them on eBay and Amazon, i.e., "Micro-USB Data Cable". 73's all round!

Great video, Josh! I wonder how the powering of the Pi would work in the field. Assuming the radio doesn't power the Pi, you would probably have to have external power. Perhaps the in the field battery (like Bioenno) running into a PP distribution block and then the radio and Pi plugged into said block? hmmm

hamlib has been updated with support for the 705, but it's got to be the recent version. I think they updated it about two months ago. However, the version in the repositories is going to be older, so you'd have to build it from source to get the latest version.

Exactly the kind of stuff I’m working on. Thank you for more Raspberry Pi content. Could you do one for Setting up Pat and other programs for Winlink on a Raspberry Pi? Over a UV-5R? I got lucky but oregon had some wicked fires and I was trying to set mine up before a potential evacuation. It got really complicated really fast. Someone suggested that VOX was so unreliable that I might have to soldier the PTT key to a GPOI pin on the pi. Any help would be appreciated.

If you have time, I know you mentioned it briefly in one of you longer videos when hooking this radio up to the software, you said you had to fiddle with a multitude of usb cords to find one that works. I spent the past two days all weekend long trying to get something to work with mine. In short, if you can find one, a person can buy that will work, a link to said product would be great seeing how the 5-6 cords i have none of which works. Thanks in advance. Dale KI5ARH

Nice radio, and I will probably get it one day. Weird design looks like they chopped the back half of an IC-7300. The ft-817 has the feature where you can carry it around with the shoulder strap. The FT-817 is like an oversize HT whereas this is like an undersized mobile or base station.

Thanks for the video! Being both the Raspberry PI and the IC-705 have WiFi and Bluetooth has anyone gotten this working with only wireless connections between the IC-705 and the Raspberry PI? The wired connection to the PI brings radio noise to the IC-705 and seems unnecessary.-N2YTF

Did I miss how you change the audio levels on this setup? Is it done on the Pi side or radio side? My SOTA setup is a squid pole monoband 20m vertical >g90>MiniProSC>RasPi4+GPS Dongle>cheap android tablet. It works great other than finicky audio but the single cable and ditching the dongle is worth buying an ic705. Removing so many points of failure, minimizing # of items, bigger screen, and reduction of weight is worth the $$$ imo. Dang it I’m sold what’s the quickest place to buy one from.

If it’s audio out for transmit it’s on the pi side. If it’s audio into the pi for decoding that is best done on the radio. The video I linked on the description covers it in more detail.

Maybe it is worth to note that the default CI-V address of the 705 is A4 (0xA4)). In the Video you see the CI-V address of the IC-7300 with 0x94. That won't work unless you change one of them, either in the Radio --> Connectors - CI-V - CI-V address or in Flrig. The CI-V address has to match, in the Software and on the Radio, otherwise no connection.
