@@transmittinguntilrobotsrep1045 I really wanted to update the firmware today, but the dx contest is this weekend, so, out of an abundance of caution, gonna wait till Monday....lol. It does look simple enough, but, 1. I'm not a computer person, and 2....that scary warning message that Icom throws at us. Would be nice if they would have something in place that might dummy proof this process. I suppose there is no such thing...lol

I’ve done dozens and dozens of firmware updates over the past twenty years, and bricking a piece of hardware is a very real possibility when the power is interrupted, SD card is bad, random buttons are pressed, and the operator is trying to multitask (yep, done that). That being said, you will do fine if you just take your time and let it complete the task. Of course, you are absolutely right to wait until after the contest - no sense in risking a weekend of fun! Good luck.

@@transmittinguntilrobotsrep1045, well, I took the plunge today and started the process. Went slicker than greased owl snot. The new options are awesome. Thanks again. You gave me the courage to soldier on through the process...lol. Appreciate the video a lot. Take care.

Very nice job Drew and very well explained. The crystal clear audio and video make it a pleasure to watch. I have owned and sold 3 different IC-7300's experimenting with various HF radios. I think I am about to purchase another, because out of all the other rigs I have tried, the IC-7300 seems to be a perfect fit for my needs. How are your kids doing with their new licenses and HT's? Hope all is well...73!
@transmittinguntilrobotsrep10453 жыл бұрын
Wow, sounds like you do a lot of experimenting. Is there someplace that you share what you've learned as you try and work with different radios? What is your primary use case? All is well here. We've been very busy this summer with a lot of new learning and experimentation. We've summited 5 mountains, backpacked with radios, installed a radio in the car, tested new antennas, and took a CW class. It has been busy! We'll start making videos again very soon to share our experiences and what we've learned. 73- AC3DS

Icom IC-7300 with IC-9700 in one case for 2500$ makes sens, nothing else. Dame, Icom make it!!!
@transmittinguntilrobotsrep10453 жыл бұрын
Agreed - They did it with the 705, so a 100w version (bigger and heavier of course) would be a nice item. I like the all-in-one, but I also wouldn't be opposed to Icom dropping the price of the 9700 to match the 7300 and having them sit side-by-side.

getting a 7300 tomorrow, does the update include past updates, or do you have to install older updates first? Presumably the new radio will be up to date but I’ll check anyway.

The multi knob program feature is nice indeed on first sight. However, press RIT or dTX and press again to switch RIT/dTX off. You'll see the function will NOT revert to its programmed function, but to the default 'kHz' function. So when you use RIT/dTX a lot (most CW ops do) this feature is quite useless in practise.
@transmittinguntilrobotsrep10453 жыл бұрын
That is definitely disappointing. I'm going to have to give that a full workup. I'm just starting to learn CW so it didn't dawn on me to try those functions in that way. Three steps forward, one step back is still progress I suppose. Thanks for sharing so that others can see this limitation.

Question. If someone buys a new 7300 is the firmware upgrade included in a new unit. Thanks. Ron z.
@transmittinguntilrobotsrep10452 жыл бұрын
It depends on when it was manufactured. From other folks that I’ve heard from over the past few months, some have had updated firmware, and others have not.

Can i upgrade old firmware from v 1.13 to the newest???? The radio works fine now without the extras.
@transmittinguntilrobotsrep10453 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right - the radio works fine without doing any firmware updates and the extras aren't necessary. I don't know for sure that you can go from 1.13 to current, but I would suspect it wouldn't be an issue. The release notes documentation, or the upgrade screen warning should say otherwise if that were the case.

Why do people call this radio a entry level rig? It’s not,
@transmittinguntilrobotsrep10453 жыл бұрын
That is a good perspective to bring to the discussion, and I really need to give it some more thought. I suppose that I've referred to it as an entry-level rig because it was where I entered the hobby, being my first HF radio. I've seen and briefly used an expensive ($3000+) radio, and I think that has been my internal comparison point. Upon some reflection now, I can see that while the 7300 might be where I started, it is not necessarily appropriate to compare it to the $3,000+ radio group as they may serve different purposes. This is definitely something for me to think about... Thank you! 73 - AC3DS
