My go to wrench is usually a standard size (kinda short) Armstrong 6 pt wrench. I like them cause they are thick in the beam area and don't cut into my palms when I bare down on them. When I can't get enough torque, I just tap the open end with a hammer and it comes off. MY all time favorite combination wrenches are the Craftsman USA cross force. A nice long wrench with a very wide beam that doesnt hurt my palms. I have some Snap on. Mainly in the Half moon metric sizes. I do remember putting a 12mm Snap on crowfoot on a brake line. Was very loose fit. I took it off and used a Craftsman USA 12mm flare instead. It was tight.

About those Crows feet.. I use a cheap Craftsman set myself. You are never going to use them often enough to warrant buying the high dollar tool truck brands and it you'll never be in situation where you're applying extreme amounts of pressure on them either. In my opinion that's a perfect example of a tool that you can totally get away with buying cheaper DIY brands over the more expensive Pro Brands.

Back in January I bought all new Icon wrenches. I used to have a mish-mash collection of MAC, Matco, Snap-On, SK, and Hazet wrenches, but everything vanished overnight in the middle of a three-day power outage. I went back to using my 15-20 year old Pittsburgh and 15-40+ year old Craftsman tools as that's all I had left. I got a wild hair and spent about $900 on Icon stuff. But I can honestly tell you I regret it. The wrenches hurt my hands. They may have tight tolerances, but they spread open way too easily, something I never encountered with the cheap Harbor Freight Pittsburgh wrenches the Icons replaced. I also managed to bow the 14mm wrench while doing an alignment - again, something that hasn't happened to me before. Functionally speaking the sockets have been great, but the chromemoly finish on the Icon sockets gets scratched and marred the second you take them out of the convenient tray. My 10mm and 13mm are so dull looking, they look like they're from a different set when you look at them in the drawer. I would have to tell anyone considering Icon wrenches to hold off and buy something else. The wrenches just aren't good enough. Buy cheaper Pittsburgh and beat the crap out of them for 10 years instead.

I appreciate you putting this out there. Lot of dudes don’t ever put these to regular use, or are inexperienced enough that they don’t recognize the drawbacks. The fact that the jaws spread under hand torque is enough for me to never consider them, I’d be furious if I rounded a bolt because of a tools quality.

Well the Gearwrench 14 piece set is 47.99. For double the price, what is ICON bringing to the table? No one is addressing that. I do recognize that the ICON has the flank drive design on the open end whereas the Gearwrench does not, but in my experience the issue with the open end is the give of the metal, opening the wrench further. For double the price, I believe they should have more than a few grooves in the open end which is not often used anyway.

@@5jjt I have not used Tekton wrenches yet. I use almost all their impact sockets and have other random tools not in sets and am happy with most all of it. This is another example of the ICON competition that I personally believe needs to be addressed. How does ICON compare to its real competition, dollar to dollar, quality to quality. I believe it would be more relevant to compare ICON to its real competitors and see who really provides value.

I bought a set of extra long Pittsburgh wrenches and first time I needed to get a difficult bolt off. It started to slip and round the edges. I ended up using an old met wrench that I had. It was smaller in length but it grabs the side walls and I was able to get the bolt out. Needless to say, the budget branches, one in the trash. I'll probably end up going with icon now

Andres Solis Channellock outsources certain tools and I believe you are both partially correct. I do remember seeing that channellock and Carlyle wrenches come from the same manufacturer out of Taiwan.

The real test will be chucking these to a pipe bar and breaking free seized tie rod nuts and adjusters with the flanked open end.....LOL. And of course how the box ends fit recessed fasteners, engage and don't stretch when herfing on them.

I got a look at the icon toolbox today. Here's my takeaway: It is a tank. I was actually pleasantly surprised at it's built quality. Now for the price yes it's still better than snap on. But is it worth what it is over the US general or Husky? The answer is in the question of, is it 3 to 5 times the box that those are?, and the answer is absolutely YES. And the question you have to ask yourself is do I need that much box for what I'm doing? Home Depot is selling a husky 80-in tool chest cabinet combo that has a side locker ten drawer base cabinet and lockable work bench hutch area for $1300, and for only being 1300 it's actually really nice. That being said, It makes it really hard to justify the extra $3,000+- on just the base unit alone for that kind of money IMO Food for thought! I know this is the wrong video too Post this on, but I had to get that out there before I forget, lol

I get where you’re coming from, but it also depends on how you use it. Is it for home or professional use? If professional, what do you do? If you work in a shop, have a lot of heavy tools, it may be worth it due to the much stronger build. The one other big difference is the lifetime warranty. That could absolutely make it worth it to many , especially when you add in the 0% financing (tool trucks are around 18%-24%).

There are tons of these icon and harbor freight comparisons on KZbin. But I have yet to see a metallurgy test. It seems to me that the steel and the forging process is more important than the few thousands of difference in handle thickness.

Have you seen a metallurgy test on a snap on ratchet? First you have to find a lab and then pay them to test it for you and you can get just as good (though not scientific) indication of the quality of the ratchet from using it and seeing if it lasts or breaks. To make the numbers mean anything you would have to test a number of different ratchets to compare which would make it more expensive. I get what you're saying and while cool to know I think using the tool is the best way to test it but doing a video of you using the tool once does nothing so I compare them to one another then like i said I will come back and be able to give a final opinion after using the tools everyday for at least 6 mos to a year. I have sets of the snap on flank drives bought in 1992 ish to replace a set of Craftsman. I still have both and my snap ons are definitely my go to. Mainly because I'm so use to them. I know by feel if it's slipping etc. The Craftsman are for when I need two wrenches of the same size, otherwise back of the drawer. I'd probably be interested in the icon wrenches if I didn't have the snap ons.

I just got back from Harbor Freight with my first ICON purchase. I got the metric ratchet wrenches and after opening I noticed all the open ends are straight cut except the 18mm. has teeth cut. Back to Harbor Freight tomorrow already. Looks like bad QC kind of sucks for my first purchase.

Snap-on, USA made craftsman, hazet, gedore, carlyle. I have some vintage 60’s and 70’s snappys and they’re well used but the chrome is 100%. I have a 4pc set of inch and a quarter and up ICON wrenches my dad got me and after about a year and a half of slightly moderate use, the plating has worn off the ends of all 4 and two have some surface rust from non use.

Went to harbor freight to look at the icon tools. The combination wrenches didn't have the anti slip feature on the open ends. Is there to different styles and I just missed it? Also every 3/8 and 1/4 ratchet I picked up took different amounts of force to moved the head. Seemed odd to me. Lack of lube maybe? I bought a 1/4 flex head anyway and had to dig through a couple to find one that seemed to operate smoothy. Any info would be appreciated.

I know they offer the anti slip and non anti slip in the ratcheting wrenches. There is a recall on the 3/8 flex head ratchets for binding up which may be why. I haven't used any other drive size but am going to go buy some this week. Hope that helps you out Luke

I have a SnapOn flankdrive plus of 10-17mm and have the rest of missing sizes from 8-22mm in carylye (same as Icon) and I'm very happy with them. My gearwrench set use to slip bad on tough to get access bolts, and If I need ratchet wrenches I just use my bahcos.

I’ve been in the automotive repair industry for 30 years. I hope to be clear with my statements. First, if you’re just starting out and need to buy Taiwan tools I do not look down on you. Second, anyone that claims that Taiwan tools are just as good as Snapon or Matco USA tools are clearly newbies in this business. Period. I’ve got sets of Snapon Flankdrive Plus wrenches that have been used daily for over twenty years that show no visible signs of wear other than the chrome not being quite as shiny. Try that with Taiwan knock-offs and you’ll understand why USA made tools cost your ass off. I purchased three sets of USA made Matco impacts way back in 1990. I’ve never busted one of them in 30 years of running them daily. Worn to the point of replacement yes, but never busted. If money isn’t an object the USA made Snap-On, Matco, Wright, or SK are worth every penny. There is a difference if you do this shit every day for a living. If you’re just a homeowner DIYer it won’t matter.

But lets be clear 500 fpr a set of wrenches is stupid and even though i have paid it i dont recommend anyone doing it because those tawain wrenches dollar for dollar are just as good as those snap on wrenches. Both lifetime warranty and both take bolts off. While snap on is better quality theyre not 10 times the price better quality and in all my time doing this I have learned that fact. If you want to buy american made then buy wright or sk for half the price and same quality. Snap on is a rip off to be honest

I have the 👉Milwaukee equivalent👈 and I use them quite a bit to hold nuts while I'm trying to break the bolt.... they work well.... there really a good design.... 12:37. The Snap On is used the ICON is not so that may account for a slightly larger clearance on the Snap On....

The flank drive is for regular usage, the flank drive plus is made for stubborn bolts and nuts that are rusted and stuck, if you use the flank drive plus on chrome bolts/nuts/ and other fasteners it will marr the finish up on the head.

what's the actual theory to teeth on wrenches? wouldn't it technically have less surface area contact and thus less friction/grip? I'd feel like just a flat non polished surface would be best. its not like pliers or vice grips that apply alot of force and dig in. a wrench needs to be the correct size and slide on and off easy so I don't see the benefit.

I don't have a go to. At work my company gave me Sonic tools and I like them, but when I look at their cost, I personally don't think they are worth the price tag. Since I got them through my company, I got the hook up. I typically stick to Icon for work.

sk, mac, snapon for years and years, then came the pittsburg v notch set about 15 odd years ago, they have proven to survive as the others have failed... the sk never failed but finally began to wear out after nearly 50 years of use... never wore out a snapon, because they never lasted that long.

I have a disproportionate amount of tools that have broke from Snap On. I have always called then Snap Off for that reason, some are very nice and may be the nicest in their field yet still not always performing dollar for dollar what you would expect. I have not broken a single one of my SK superkrome wrenches, I have 2or 3 that the open end is trashed from abuse but. Also, there is a color coded set of ratchet wrenches from harbor freight, and color coded chrome sockets as well both that I have had about 15 years that I have absolutely mistreated and not a single one has ever failed. In fact, the 14mm ratchet wrench from harbor freight I use with a 2.5 lb maul to break axle nuts (the 4 on the back) loose on toyota's for years after breaking a socket and a gear wrench I grabbed it one day and have used it since.. they are in that doesn't matter, just get it done tool category where I can happily abuse the tool without worry and toss it if it ever does break.

I have wrenches with teeth and some without so it depends on the job. Ones with teeth would tear up air line fittings and sometimes get stuck so I prefer the mac/proto design for softer fasteners and Milwaukee/snap on for harder.

I'm guessing the Carlyle is made from older tooling and the ICON tooling is just the latest version with some slight tweaks (improvements ?). Carlyle, Milwaukee, Channellock, and Icon wrenches are all Made in Taiwan. Chances are there are only one factory on that island have the tooling to cut those open end teeth and one set of dies is made for each contract for those wrenches.

I used every brand wrenches under the sun and 1996 I bought snap flank drive set for about $325 10mm _19mm I still have the same set 26 years later ❤ talk about money well spent, buy once and use it for rest of your Life they pay for themselves over and over again don't waste your money buying wannabe snap on buy the original.

The icon might have a better grip at the open end due to the larger teeth. But I guarantee those teeth will fuck that fastener up because the teeth are so aggressive. My Milwaukee wrenches so the same thing. I mangled the head of the bolt I was taking off. It didn’t quite round off the head, but it bit in and left some noticeable marks, which can lead to rounding off in the future. But it will certainly bite into damaged fasteners that’s for sure. All depends on the situation.

They definitely will and i think the grip these wrenches have should be used only for rusty bolts and for bolts you aren't worried about marking the bolts up. Thanks for your input brother

Redemption Garage yeah I found out the hard way. I went to adjust the compound slide on a lathe in school. Couldn’t fit the box end so I had to use the open end. I noticed they were rounding off, thinking they were old bolts I replaced them. Went to tighten them down and was almost pulling metal shavings off the new bolts. Milwaukee wrenches hold up great though!

On another YT video the guy wasn't impressed with the ICON chrome finish. The chrome scratched easily and the wrenches looked like they had been well used but just barely used compared to other wrenches. How do you all feel about how a wrench looks?

I don't think people buying Snap on tools are looking at Icon for a replacement tool and vice versa. I think Icon competes with gear wrench, craftsman, husky dewalt, etc... Compare those brands to Icon for the more budget conscious shoppers. I doubt non-professional are ready to drop 1k on some snappy tools unless they are tool connoisseurs.

There are two different type of tool lovers, those that swear by HF and those that hate HF. I am the one that hates them because they are crap. One time use Chinese crap. However, this icon line does have my attention. I do think they are shooting themselves in the foot for targeting mechanics with high prices versus targeting DIY’ers. Just because it’s high price but lower than Snap On, it doesn’t make it better than the other mechanic’s go to cheaper tool lines. A little tray doesn’t justify $150 for a ratchet wrench set that doesn’t even go to 21. Keep your 6 and 7. Bet you won’t touch those in your life. I’ll take my 19, 20, 21 with another brand that’s sells them cheaper.

Great video bro👍🔧🍺 my go to was the Carlyle offset wrench but now i grab my metric SO long flank drive plus or Cornwell Sae . 7:30 It's the standard length SOEXM710 is going for $405 on the website. The set you showed has no flank drive plus which means no teeth on open end.

I have 2 sets the soex set which is flank drive and the other set is the standard non flank drive but when i use these i use the flank drive set since the icon has the max bite they claim. I wish your voice volume was as loud as your intro music. Great video as always!!!!! It would be really cool if you knew someone who works in a machine shop where you live who can do tolerance testing, which would give instant results rather than waiting a year or so for real world experience results, which may not show exactly how much a particular brand can take. If you don't know anyone in the field, maybe one of your viewers who lives in your area can help out with that. I would like to see how much torque each of the different brands can tolerate (all the way up to and including failure) before they bend or even break. They all have lifetime guarantees, so it shouldn't be any problem to get them replaced after they do fail. Those kind of results are very rarely achieved by hand, and when they are, you really have no clue how much torque was being applied before the tool failed. You also really won't know if the tool was previously damaged, but not to the point of failure, and the newly applied force was enough to finish off the failure.

The volume is noted brother and will figure it out. Now as far as the maximum torque testing if you can put a pipe on them and they dont break which i do in part 2 coming up in a few hours then they are good to go. While it is cool to see how much torque they will take and their breaking point i think that a real world application is more informative because no man is going to put more torque on these wrenches than i do in the next couple of videos. So check them out and tell me what you think when i publish them. I understand people want to see stuff pushed to the max and i dont need a machine shop to do that all you need is a hydraulic pump a jack and a little ingenuity so when i get the money up to get the hydraulic system i will put it together and we will check the maximum capability on these tools. But I was more interested in making more practical real life use videos to start... I appreciate the suggestion and will get to something like that as soon as i am capable but to buy that kind of stuff costs money. And the volume issue might not be fixed in the next couple of videos but the next one i record and edit i will take care of it. Thanks again brother.

Ya know snap on is the shit and we all know it. They’re also ridiculously overpriced. If you can afford it great but for the weekend guy Icon is just fine. And for added bonus Icon made the box so you can pull the plastic Icon piece off and use the box as a separate storage tray for parts and extensions.

a few things one is you are comparing icon long pattern wrench to a standard length snap on 18mm why didnt you compare a long pattern snap on to a long patter icon? also you didnt say a word about the box end being thicker. you can see that in the video. then you measure the open end and you are then comparing a what looks like a well used snap on to a brand new icon.. lets use that icon for a few years and then come back and measure it..

Second of all i have said that the snap on is thicker in a lot of ways and third of all these are not long pattern wrenches they are the same set that i am comparing to icon and snap on third i puttye price of every snap on wrench in the video on pricing if you want to see more go look at that. The soex set that i have is 405 dollars the icon set is 99 dollars so buy whichever one you want i dont care. I am comparing 2 comparable wrenches icon on the harbor frieght website compares these wrenches to ine another so thats what i am using. They are the same length and as far as the differences go you are going to have to watch other videos i cant have a 9 hour video so i can make sure i cover every deak snap on has every different type if wrench snap on has so these wrenches are what harbor frieght compares to their wrenches so thats what i am using. If you disagree and think snap on is the best if you love snap on with all your heart i could care less thats your business i am comparing what i have and conparing what hf compares to them.

its all good maybe it was my misunderstanding bc at 4:24 you said these are the long handle chrome wrenches so i just assumes you were saying these were the long icon wrenches my bad but if these are both " standard wrench set" i am cool with that guess that was my fault for assuming... i would say snap on are not for everyone dont really see a DIY or home owner buying a set of snap on unless then wanted to.. one of the issues i have with china freight is they copy everyone elses stuff business is easy if you steal from everyone else and then copy them.. i would like to see a test of how torque say a 19mm or 14mm will take before it breaks... i understand the last thing you want to do is make videos and have people come on here and blast you.. good work on the video's

I’m pretty confident that if HF is introducing a pro line that the wrenches are going to be pretty resilient and competitive to brand name tools, I also find it funny in comments on other tool/mechanic channels are saying that KZbin is in love with ICON right now. Icon and Carlyle are not the same wrenches? So much for unbiased comparison testing by Redemption Garage. In your video you measure the thickness and width of the handles of Icon and Snap On wrenches. Why didn't you make the same comparison with Icon and Carlyle? Or did you? Those wrenches are almost identical aside from the branding fonts on the wrench handles which is a very minor issue to change. If they're not the same company why would Icon copy the products of a mediocre company like Carlyle and not Snap On, Husky, Craftsman or some other product with proven durability? The answer to all these questions is you sold out to Harbor Freight, Icon or both. What deal did you make with them to recant your initial claims? Money? Free tools? Anyway, some of the bozos who subscribe to your channel might buy your sudden change of heart regarding Icon and Carlyle. Those who are still capable of critical thought will probably assume you're taking gratuities. If I'm right this will be a serious blow to your rep.
