This is going to be really interesting. For example when will PS3 servers shut down? What happens when you want to play your PS3 games that need patches? Hopefully Sony doesn't rely on PS Now to solve this. They could design a way to download final patch for a game from the web on PC and load it from a USB drive. They would need to update and test PS3 OS to implement this but that would probably be best long term.

That's the scary thing about DLC and game downloads. When you buy them you're just buying a license to play the game and technically the game company could potentially take that away at any time. On a side note, Free Ps plus games are great but if you want to stop your subscription someday you lose all those titles that you got through that service. Great video Reggie! Really got me thinking deeper about waiting on new releases. Luckily I downloaded Scott pilgrim back when it came out but I would have loved a physical copy.

IMHO the reason new games released are so unfinished is because of the internet, yes i know no body ever said that but that is the real reason, because when you think a little bit, we didn't have fast and good internet connections back then, hell, 90% of the people i knew didn't have internet, including me, but as i said back then we didn't have connections so game developers didn't have a way to communicate with the gamer and....the issue of nowadays games: updating the game, they just didn't have that tech back then so when they made a game they had to make sure it is 100% finished because that will be it, nothing will be changed about the game after the release and they knew it, and of course there were alot of bad 8 and 16bit games but that is not because they didn't finish it, it was because they thought that it was completed, and that is the issue nowadays, developers know that they can fix the game any time the want through an update or something, and that needs to stop.
@NYCJoeBlack6 жыл бұрын
Kemo Kemo - I usually wait until a COMPLETED version is release. I did hat with Resident Evil 7, The Witcher 3: COMPLETE EDITION, and countless others. It also has to do with how complicated the game is. In the 90s / early 2000s most of the more complicated games were on PC and they did have patches to download to fix problems. Think RPG like Baldur's Gate, Gothic 1-3, Deus Ex, and others. But you are right the internet is certainly an excuse for developers to ship a knowingly buggy version on the disc. All they need to do is have the patch ready by launch day. That is really irritating.

How was Clock Tower complex? That is where the guy chases you around with scissors right? By complex I mean more RPG with a ton of inter connected quest lines and dialogue choices the game has to remember to properly continue the story and possibly branching paths. Those are harder to test because each play through is very unique.
@Miraak226 жыл бұрын
statikcat well for the snes it was pretty complex, you have to remember that this game was a SURVIVAL HORROR game, ON THE SNES, i know it is not as complex as RPGS but for the snes it was. What a stupid and ignorant thing to say. There are plenty of games that are finished but developers choose to expand the story with expansion style DLC like old PC days. Some good examples I can think of are Horizon Zero Dawn, Witcher 3, Elder Scrolls games, Dishonored, and expansions aren't a new concept. Expansions have been around since the 90s PC gaming, it's just they are now stigmatized as being DLCs. Also there are many new games without any season pass or DLC like Yakuza games, Uncharted 4, Dishonored 2, YS 8, Persona 5 etc. Also most of the time the DLC is throwaway anyways and not even worth it for people who enjoy single player games and aren't into MP.

I think the most important point about wanting content on the physical media is that in 10-15 years, that content won't be available for download. Just look at things like the Wii eShop closing and games disappearing off the Xbox Live store. I bought Street Fighter II on Xbox Live years ago, then my old Xbox 360 died and I tried to download the game on Xbox One and it's not even available to download even though I purchased it. If they're doing this to entire games, you know they're going to do the same for DLC. Give me physical media ALWAYS.

Actually Reggie I picked up Resident Evil VII Gold Edition, and everything was on the disc except Not a Hero (which is what the download required info was for), and it's free for all versions since from what I understand Capcom weren't happy with it, so that gamestop employee gave false information. So feel free to pick it up. However Arcade Edition is indeed a voucher, BUT they were in fact on the disc that comes with arcade edition, they just have a lock over them until you use the voucher, arcade mode was also on the disc....yet the story mode still required a separate download..... So they in fact made new disks for the game, they just didn't enable the content to be used without a voucher. Also a Injustice 2 complete edition has been out for a few weeks Reggie! haha! It's called Legendary Edition I think. BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle is probably the biggest fighting game DLC offender. Only comes with half the roster on disc, the other half is paid DLC, and the big kicker is the game is a sprite dump like the old Capcom vs. games, so they're selling people already made characters as DLC. In fact they're actually reselling DLC characters from the previous BlazBlue game as DLC in this. Anyway I agree, this whole voucher crap for physical complete games is getting old. However what's going on with Switch is even worse, in which physical games don't even come with the complete game on the cartridge, so you have to download part of the game before the cartridge even works at all. Plus of course Capcom releasing collections on the Switch, yet making the larger file size games vouchers (Resident Evil Revelations Collection, Mega Man Legacy Collection, Mega Man X Collection).

Final Fantasy XV Royal Edition is the same. It's the vanilla disc with a single use download code inside. Was quite annoyed but thankfully Royal Edition physical was £19.99 when the DLC combined would have been around £40-£50. Preservation is a big concern when this content isn't on the physical disc and you're relying instead on a server that's going to go offline sometime. It's also training people not to buy games on day one, people wait for the inevitable "complete edition" and it hurts those initial sales.

Truthfully, I felt that way a little with the original PS2 version... I mean the way they fall over so slowly and the music that plays when you kill one of them, it just looks and sounds so sad, and makes you feel bad, I actually almost decided to stop after the first one, but continued til the end to see if it was all worth it or not..

I usually buy digital now and wait until the complete physical edition is in a $5-10 bin at a game shop for the collection. Unless the game has a limited release that will be rare down the road. Still sad that so many just include a download code.
@judgemario6 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately physical media is on the way out. I hate it too. What happens when our clouds and hard drives all breakdown? But I think we're almost to the point where every game will be digital. Producing physical copies probably hurts a company's bottom line. It costs money to make the game, to decorate a box, to ship the final product. Department stores take a portion of the revenue from sales as well. I wish Scott Pilgram and Marvel vs. Capcom Origins had physical copies. I missed out on those.
@judgemario6 жыл бұрын
Vengenace Early That's true.
@YinxZork6 жыл бұрын
Why would a physical copy hurt a company in this digital era, everything was physical before. To me digital hurt more just because there is a big audience that still prefer physical games, its not logical to buy digitally because you don't own it. I don't know, it's just my way of thinking and maybe I'm wrong.
@ElBribri6 жыл бұрын
I doubt physical media will be out, Vynil records are coming back, people do like physical media, and it shouldnt dissapear, because of the sense of ownership, depending on a digital bs that doesnt exist in some cloud that might dissapear just as fast as it appeared is a terrible idea
@maxismydog1016 жыл бұрын
Digital media last longer than physical, theres ways to back up harddrives and cloud saves, if something happens to the physical media, thats it, its done. PS1-PS2 games are already getting disc rot.
@TheBloodyNights6 жыл бұрын
Meh, they can last longer that is true. But as stated if I want to go buy the Scott Pilgrim game, or MvC: Origin's collection. I cannot. Also I feel like anyone who has ps1-ps2 disc rot didn't take care of their games at all. All of my PS1, and PS2 games work flawlessly.
@AttunedFlux6 жыл бұрын
All of these reasons are exactly why I avoid buying the physical version of anything except for nintendo games. They might as well sell all physical games as a piece of flat cardboard with scratch-off codes and stack them in the 100's on store shelves. It would be more ridiculous than things are now, but its not far off.

I can't agree enough on all this. I despise download codes when I purchase a Gold or a Complete Edition of a game and I want everything on a disc when I do. I might not be online all the time and I really don't like trusting a company to have all my purchased DLCs on their servers forever. If they don't trust us with all these constant connection requirements, why should I trust them with all my digital downloads?
@caligoclarus6 жыл бұрын
But it seems you frequently buy fairly new release games that you show in the pickup videos with MJR. Oh and Scott Pilgrim isn't gone forever, it's abandonware and can be played by anyone on computer.

Unless there's some sort of guarantee that they release a complete version with all DLC on the disc, I don't think that's the main reason to wait for buying new games. Most of these "complete" versions don't have their DLC on the disc anyways. For me, the main reason to wait is the fact that games these days get a price drop so fast. Look at Ni No Kuni 2. It's out for like two months or so and it's already 34.99 over here.
@waflznsyrup4366 жыл бұрын
same reason I wait.
@RedxShinobi6 жыл бұрын
vcfreek thats because when a game doesn’t sell well, they drop the price to promote it and spike up the sales a little bit
@vcfreek6 жыл бұрын
Even the games that sell well drop in price a lot faster than it used to. Within six months, there are price drops of 50% and more for fast selling games.
@RedxShinobi6 жыл бұрын
vcfreek yea they do but it depends on the game, mostly multiplayer games tend to drop in price pretty quickly. Take a look at Destiny 2 for instance, the player base dropped dramatically and now that game is pretty cheap. But then when you look at a single player game is critically acclaimed like breath of the wild, it will remain $50-60 for a very long time

Vegito Charmara I Just collected every C64 game I saw at bootsales or Garage sale, years ago they were so cheap, I love the sound chip so back in the day I bought games for the music first, there are in the region of 30,000 C64 games produced, so whatever you gaming preference is I am sure there are C64 games out there, I wish you well in your quest for C64 goodies.
@retrology8bit3376 жыл бұрын
Vegito Charmara Yes the C64 is the computer / games machine with a built in keyboard, it came with a cassette deck which plugged into the back of the C64, disk drives were available but were expensive but were much quicker at loading up the game, there were far more cassette games released than on disk.

When u buy a "game of the year" edition and open it and it's the same basic disc with 20 dlc codes, it's like going to burger King and asking for a whopper and they give u the dollar burger and they give u a coupon to go buy a bigger bun and extra burger patty then go assemble it at home
@JRRSantore6 жыл бұрын
I totally get you Reggie. But it seems the problem is many games are almost 50GB now even before patches and if I remember correctly Standard Blu-Ray discs can hold up to 50GB. So a game like Final Fantasy XV which is almost 100GB with all DLC and Patches installed can't fit on disc and of course the companies are not gonna manufacture a 2nd disc so they give you a season pass code. Think about it, last gen games were much smaller GB wise so if it was a 360 game it usually came with a 2nd disc cuz it was a cheap standard possibly dual layer DVD and PS3 games were Blu-Ray and games were small enough GB wise for them to be able to put the DLC on the disc. EDIT: I'm not trying to give an excuse nor do I AGREE with this practice I am just stating this with a publishers mindset. They want to unfortunately save as much $$ as they can while MAKING as much $$$ as they can. It"s sad and BELIEVE ME I was furious when I bought the GOTY Edition of Dragon Age: Inquisition only to find out not only was the DLC NOT on disc BUT all the season pass codes expired 1 year prior to my purchase. So I get the hate I was just trying to explain it from a tech standpoint

There's no excuse. The companies publishing these turds are run by greedy pigs. Developers don't have job security, publishers call all the shots. Every effort is made to keep all costs as low as possible, with every possible avenue for increased profits pursued.

I have seen the excuse in regards to Final Fantasy XV Royal edition that it wouldn't fit on the disc. But what about Fallout 3 on 360 where they give you an extra disc? What pisses me off is I kept Saints Row 4 sealed for a while before I finally opened it only to find the Gat Out of Hell code was used even though I had it sealed and the Dead Island collection I sold on 360 which had both on disc and I bought the PS4 one and that only has the first game. I'd of held on to my 360 copy had I known.

Waiting on fighting games is a bit of a gamble though if you like playing random people online. If you don't buy and play early most of the games player bases die off by the time a complete version comes out. Especially if you are a Guilty Gear or Blazblue fan.

I know what you mean about current gaming practices~ my issues is I want to get the new Detroit game coming out but it annoys me that you can order the "Regular" edition physical copy but the "deluxe" edition is only digital. I'm also not huge on being connected to the internet for playing games. I just want to be able to boot up the disc and play. I don't want to have to download content and stuff. It's so frustrating. I'd pay more for a physical copy of something in a "deluxe" version just for the packaging, etc instead.

I share your opinion. But the thing for me is that I like to have complete games which I can still play in 20-30 years. I Cant play the same game years after if it was heavily dependent on DLC/ updates/ addons etc. Also Im kind of a structured gamer. I play long games mostly rpgs and sometime action and horror and my game time is limited. When I finish a game I like to close that chapter, but some game add dlc to it months or sometimes a year+ later. They cant expect me to go back to that game after so long right? I forgot a lot about the story and the controls as well. Its hard for me to open up the book again after I finished it and closed the door.

Funny that happened to me exactly last weekend in the Gamestop, I had seen a gold edition of an Xbox One game for 10€. At the checkout, thank God the guy said that the gold content is only for downloading, but the codes are no longer usable. What kind of garbage is this? Anyway, if you think about how to continue with all the download games? Will you stay with this provider until your death (or his)? When you go away you can't take your games and you practically threw your money away.

I think the reason they have the gold edition's with a code is so more people have to buy it new. If they have a code you can't let your friend borrow it and you can't buy it used or get higher trade-in value for it because it's only your's digitally.
@eppskevin6 жыл бұрын
brotha, this is such a great topic. Part of the reason why I kind of got out of buying hard copies and consoles. Like I used to really be into, but my last console I have is the Wii. I just play stuff on Steam now. Although they still have similar practices, but at least it's expected on a platform like that. I really do miss being able to wait for a game, buy it, and get the intended game, good or bad, and just run with it. Being a software developer myself, even I see how we become way more dependent on that mindset...YES on the indie games. They aren't tainted by corporate minds at that point. Pure love. I can always get down with that. Love that music too.

I totally know what you mean about 5:15. I am fairly poor, so I can't always afford the internet and I like to have all my games stored and then backed up onto a HDD, but these business practices and DRM-Trickery is making that harder and harder for me. There are games that I own, which have no value if I have no internet. So say for a few expections, I try my best not to collect these kind of games. As they are literally a waste of space. I'd rather collect and play old PC Games or Emulated games, over content that I paid for but can't access whenever I want.
