Ahhh yes, this was a gem. A fortuitous crossroads between legendary eras. Probably the closest we'll ever get to two dynasties clashing against one another. If remember correctly both the Steelers, and 49ers offenses weren't that spectacular in this game, and the defenses dictated the game. Anyway, thanks for uploading! Great to see this in pristine clarity!!!

For those that don’t know The Steelers had seen this offense before. Bill Walsh was the offensive coordinator in Cincinnati where he first started using the concepts that became “The West Coast Offense.” The Steelers said that it gave them problems.

Does anyone remember Dream Bowl II that featured the 1978 Steelers against the 1989 49ers? It was an NFL Films production shown on ESPN around 1990 or 1991. They pulled clips of past 49ers-Steelers games and pretended it was the Dream Bowl. They used a bunch of plays from this game. Mel Blount "won" the game with a pick 6 of Montana in overtime. The '78 Steelers also won Dream Bowl I over the '72 Dolphins on a late field goal. I was fascinated by those make-believe games as a kid.

Funny how both teams are meeting on Sunday with similar circumstances and roles reversed. The 49ers are the powerhouse, having played in the Super Bowl in 2019, and played in the NFC Title game 3 out of 4 years under Kyle Shanahan. Stacked with playmakers on both sides of the ball. The Steelers are a completely rebuilt squad with a new talented core of young players coming off a very impressive preseason, with many wondering how good they really are. Right out the gate they get to see how they measure up against a contender.

As someone who grew up with football in the 80s and 90s I can tell all the confused youngsters who just hear Summerall as a retro Joe Buck and don’t understand all the praise, you are correct.
