Iconic Houses • The Melnikov House • Videolecture by Jean-Louis Cohen • Van Schijndel House Utrecht
Lecture by Jean-Louis Cohen, professor architectural history at New York University and Sorbonne Paris.
The world famous architect Konstantin Melnikov (1890-1974) designed his utopian house, an icon of modern architecture in the center of Moscow in the late 20s. From the moment that Joseph Stalin forbid modern architecture in the Soviet Union, Melnikov was denied the right to work as an architect and placed under house arrest. This lecture tells the amazing story of the Melnikov House and the fate of an architect living as in a prison in his utopian home.
Following to the film we recommend to watch the documentary 'The Melnikov House - a Moscow Utopia' directed by Rax Rinnekangas of Bad Taste Limited; (2007, 58 min.). Watch the trailer here ( • Five Master Houses of ... ).
