Lough Tay gets its name from the Gaelic name of Loch Té ( Tea lake) because the dark bog water looks like tea. Its also known as the Guinness lake because it looks like a pint of Guinness after the Guinness family added the white sand when the lake was part of their estate at Luggala. I hope you visited Glendalough just below the lake where there is a round tower and chapel from the 6th century founded by St Kevin lived who gave St Patrick his last rights. I would also recommend the Powerscourt Estate which is nearby and close to the motorway to the ferry. Lonely Planet have rated the house in the top 10 houses in the world and National Geographic have recently rated the gardens in the top 3 in the world. Its a stunning stately home that you can go into for free as its now full of shops. Elsewhere on the estate is the biggest waterfall in Ireland that also appeared in The Vikings, Willow and Excalibur

It's good to see someone doing the WaW. I have done it about 3 years ago on the 1250. Just watch out for the singage as you go further up north. Sometimes the locals love to remove or turn the sinage to the wrong way. I would also recommend getting a Wild Atlantic Way Passport from any of the tourist or post offices. You can colllect stamps along the way. I keep mine next to my on the shelf as a reminder of that great trip! I'm local to Cork, If you are yet to pass it on your way to Kinsale, you migth want to to a small detour to Cobh, where which was the last stop of the Titanic or to Crosshaven, it's a lovely little town with the worlds oldest yacht club, the Royal Cork Yacht Club. A stop at Canbem fort Meagher (if it's still open for the season) or Charles Fort near Kinsale is also a great stop.
