We are exploring how projections are used in cinema to create artistic visuals and special effects. Moving matte paintings to extend sets, simulation of screens, combination of miniatures with real life action and of course - the artistic possibilities. We recreate the iconic James Bond Goldfinger intro… with a twist.

I would suggest making the video that is being projected sped up and when you edit you slow everything down. That way you won't see the model shake at close-ups but the projection is steady, and the overall feel becomes smoother. Thanks for the tutorial, it was great!
@MediaDivision
@MediaDivision 5 жыл бұрын
nice idea, but it would also cut your light in halve.... not something I would want to try here, at least not with my cam. Did here subtile movements bother you?
@lonewolf115

A risk by doing this is that the ghosting that you talk about might be more prominent. Or maybe it solves it?

I have mentioned this before on another Media Division video (Mamiya lenses); I am a medium format still photographer with an interest in film making - I watch BTS segments on almost all movies I buy/rent. I am so incredibly impressed by Nicolas’s ability to teach film making mechanics, and his humor makes it all the more worthwhile watching. I hope that you continue make more content like this.

@@MediaDivision - for what it is worth, I watched this or any other video not because of it's "Like" count, but the content. I do not always seek to "...be entertained?!?!?!?!" {in the best Russell Crowe voice}, but in most cases to be educated or informed. No matter the "Like" amount of this video verses your others, it is still an example of great BTS mechanics. Again, I hope you continue to make more content like this, and all your other videos. J.D.

It is not so much about the likes, but about the view count. It shows that very few seen it. t was a lot of afford for so little views. Views are ultimately the currency of KZbin and the one thing that is worth something besides the love of your fans (which is reward in itself but doesn't feed your kids)

Media Division I actually can’t even watch DLP projectors. I find as soon as I turn my head away from the screen even slightly, I get rainbowing on the edge of my vision. Apparently not everyone sees it, but I find it tremendously annoying. Your wife is a great sport for helping out with the video, and I really think you nailed the look of the original. I’ve been wanting to film some actors and the reproject the footage back onto a similar subject... like a live version of Blade Runner 2049’s Joi/Mariette scene... would be tough to line up.

@MediaDivision
@MediaDivision 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Stephen.... that is very motivating for me. Unfortunately way to few viewed this to make the sponsor happy.... so, thats a no ;-) The copyright is always a tough one... but if there was ever a case of "fair use", it is this one. It is a parody, it is for education, it does not take away the original creators ability to monetise, and it adds a complete new context (that is considered art). Fair use is recognised by youtube and by international law. The Music itself is legal by sharing revenue with the copyright holder

This is gold! Pun intended ;) How did you turn the shutter off? I don't understand this bit
@MediaDivision
@MediaDivision 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks man..... well, a digital sensor doesn't need to transport the film, so you can expose the sensor for the duration of the whole frame. In case of 24fps with 1/24th of a second, also known as 360° shutter. There is a small time that the sensor needs to discharge, but that is minimal. You will get too much motion blur with 360° shutter, but that is not relevant with slow moving objects. 360° shutter is the same as "turn of the shutter" as there is no time interval that leaves the sensor unexposed

Another great video - liked, subscribed and recommended! It would be interesting to hear your thoughts should you experiment with other projector technologies >> I briefly owned a DLP projector but the rainbow effect made me feel sick each time I used it.

Thanks Max... glad to have you around. I might, but how often does one have a project that needs one, right. I don't see the rainbow with my bare eye at all... or at least my brain doesn't. It is just the dreadful camera that makes it so obvious.
@TPToE
@TPToE 5 жыл бұрын
@@MediaDivision I tried a DLP projector about 8 years ago, so it's quite likely that more recent models don't have quite such pronounced issues with the rainbow effect. Then again, some people seem to see it more readily than others, so it might just be the way my defective brain is wired. On a separate note, I've always wondered how this transition was done in the film Highlander: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXfEo6Kqdtabb9U I'd be interested to hear your ideas - it's a simple but brilliant segue and I've only vague musings about how such an effect would be achieved in the lab back in 1986. My best guess is that the lake section was shot with the camera partially submerged and then a travelling travelling matte was created to match the undulations of the lake surface. Feasible?

@MediaDivision
@MediaDivision 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jorge… the DLP technology will intrinsically cause problems, as the colors of a projected image are not displayed at the same time. LCD projectors on the other hand don't have this problems and are therefor a better alternative to a DLP projector. I don't think, that there a good solutions to work with a DLP but to switch off the shutter and to live with some artifacts (like I did)

Ricky Suprayudi absolutely Ricky. I don’t know how deep the room has to be to remove spill completely, but of course, that depends on the type of Muslin and the brightness of the beamer. A longer lens helps a lot.

Nikolas, where do you get music for your commercial videos? I'm going to start working, and music is my everest, hard to find audio that doesn't sound cheesy and out of place without running out of money. I really don't have the budget to pay for music yet, as I'm just beginning my career, but if that's the only option, what do you recommend?

@@MediaDivision while this method did improve the look of the projection (less noise, no horizontal LED flicker), color ghosting still occurs. Yet it feels less frequent! I have a feeling that increasing projector's fps to 200 fps (to match 4x times slowdown) may do the trick. However my projector might not being able to pull this off 😄
