Nice reaction 👏 Agnetha was the voice and predominant image for ABBA. The way she expressed the word were evident in her voice and face. She could sing anything. Quite an emotional song and interesting beat. One of their best songs. 👍👏💕👧🏼

Most of ABBAs songs were based on their real life experience, So the heartache they were experiencing at the time they were actually living it. That what made them so unique as a supergroup.

This song pushed pop music as far it can go towards growing up, from the drama and tumult of youth to the threshold of adulthood with its resignation to routine. But even ABBA did not know how to take the next step, hence... the long silence after this single.

It's so hauntingly beautiful, your reaction is very human - there are a few interpretations of this, and none of them are "wrong" - it's whatever you want it to be, to be honest. I almost see the new song "Don't Shut Me Down" as a response to this - 40 years later. Magical.

It took me a year (ca 14 months) to 'understand' - and love - this song with its harmonies. It's a masterpiece! ~','~ I found out in 2020, that I loved ABBA's music (when listening to someone reacting to them). *One year later* I got to know they'd come back for their fans! Though living in Sweden, I had to wait one year only. Unbelievable!

Thanks for the reaction. It's hard to pick a favourite with ABBA. But this one is certainly one I have that struggle with. It's so cryptic and haunting. And it's meant to be too. They did this one in front of an audience on Show Express in 82. It's one of their last. Agnetha is brilliant. So seductive but so so sad. It is my favourite performance. The band split was within a month or two.

This is one of my favourite ABBA songs - very atmospheric. There is no reference to the group - it’s a fictional story (not all songs are autobiographical).
@70AD-user45
@70AD-user45 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think it is fictional. I think it's the final part of a Trilogy of songs. The 1st part was the Winner Takes It All. The 2nd follow up song was One Of Us. Finally there's The Day Before You Came which completes the story and the trilogy. Three beautifully written songs. Each song continues the heartbreaking story.
@PerryCJamesUK
@PerryCJamesUK 2 жыл бұрын
Even when you write something as fiction, you inevitably write about yourself. It's always a tale told from the writer's point of reference. So this song to me, is about how B & B thought about the life of a lonely woman living a normal life, without ever knowing who she was inside and until she met the person who she fell for. Songwriters like those in ABBA are not computers, removed from their art. The sadness in the lyrics and the music, are very telling too, of the age and the experience of the writers. This isn't a young person's song of loss of a boyfriend the way the earlier breakup songs were. This is somebody past the first flush of youth reflecting upon wasted years. It may not be 100% factual to the ABBA story but it's far from being a completely untrue tale.

@@PerryCJamesUK I always thought The Day Before You Came was the final part of the triology of songs, with the story beginning with The Winner Takes It All. The break up continued and was finalised with One Of Us, and the final song in the triology was The Day Before You Came. After the final break up on One Of Us, she looks back at the mundane and routine and aspects of her life, until that someone special arrives in her life with The Day Before You Came.

I found funny how people trying to explaining and misunderstanding this consequently. This song not made to the pop world level of interpretations, even it's a pop song, but far more complex and touching even the metaphisical levels.... I call this song Abba's Requiem, because Benny Anderson addiction with Mozart is obvious (just hear how "As Good as New" starting), but here he going more further, with it's dark harmonies in the middle and especially in the final parts of the song - these harmonies are concrete reminisences to Mozart's Requiem Confutatis title closing chords! And about the lyrics. The videoclip totally misinterpreting the meaning of the song! I see some intention behind, maybe they thought the original meaning absolutely out of the image, what people thought about ABBA, and they just created this clip to masking this fact....The concrete lyrics doesn't talking about any kind of relationship. It's about a full day of a lonely person, with routin like strict schedule. The big question is - inside this empty, repetiting life, who will make the change, who is this "You" who will came on the next day, changing everything, breaking all the routine? This has no answer in the lyrics, but on the final chords overhears from Mozart masterwork giving a proper answer....Mozart Requiem's last two title is Confutatis and Lacrymosa, where the souls, leaving their earthly life asking forgivness from God, just before they meet with Him. If we enriching this meaning from a single person to the world, we can found the metaphisic level of the song - very much not fitting with pop expectations... Some home made videoclips was able to catching this level of the song, and it's obvious, that if you just hearing, something not okay with that - impossible properly interpret anything from the song first time... Because this "You" who "came" on the next day it's not just a new lover or something very banal thing, but something much deeper. This is why the detailful story telling of a very boring, routine day. On the shadow or hope of the next day all these boring routine revalued as it is - a valueless lonely life. But "Sorry but I have no sense to living without aim".... The "turning off the light" symbolizing the end of the ABBA project once and for all... (This was their last song)...Two marriage finished with break, no way to continue without harmony, without faith...(They needed 40 years to find their faith again - I have a faith in you - in each other, after 40 years of indemnity).... This song is something what very rare in the world of non-classical music - a song with very complex meaning and very unique sounding..... Not something you just hear and could interpret as it is, you need time, self-reflection and knowledge.... But if you have sensuality, you can catch it immediately, even if you unable to explain. I was happy to see your honest reactions, and the way you catched the character of this song. What else we can do if we hearing a Requiem, we just shaking and crying! Thank you very much!

I think you have captured the deeper meaning of this song with lyrics by Björn(Bjoern). As the intelligent thinker he is, almost all the time, has at least one often two underlaying thoughts in his lyrics. I've followed his music since the 1960-ies and is in Bennys age meaning about one year younger than Björn. Benny is the main composer in all their songs and Björn in the lyrics. The ladies participate as Agnetha told most with ideas in the songparts and their harmonies with Frida in the studio.

how are You? so glad to see you very well "The day before you came" It is the last song ABBA recorded, although it was not the last single (it was the nexte, "Under Attack") It was one of the last three that barely entered the Top 30 in the UK, a low expectation for what ABBA was used to. It is said to have been recorded in a dark and damp room, to make it more gloomy and to help Agnetha interpret It's a fiction story, a cryptic lyrics by the guitarist Björn and a dark music by the keyboard from Benny I will be honest of all Their singles (I think there are 27 in UK) this is the one I like the least Agnetha's vocal performance is the best, but She is very lonely without a chorus and with a few of musical instruments The video is also strange, but it is well achieved, in relation to the story that the lyrics tell again Agnetha looks alone, now as an actress, the rest of the members of ABBA appear only at the end and disaggregated I understand that many like it, it is even well ranked in the votes for the best ABBA song (#3 for British fans) I also know that is part of research and musical experimentation of the last years of ABBA But this song is not the style of music that I like, and Agnetha remains as a soloist That is why I prefer his other songs, where the four most involved are, in addition to other musical genres I think that, as You now react to the ABBA Last song recording in 1982, in the next You could react the ABBA First song recording in 1972, ten years ago: "People need love" kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHfTY2yVYq1pqac (at these time wasn't called ABBA) Thanks for your reaction I see you in the next GOD bless you and stay safe best regards from Buenos Aires Argentina

ABBA's music certainly moves people and effects them with all sorts of emotions. But the song's theme is within the video and there are one or two subtle clues in the lyrics. Fans have long debated whether it ended well or badly for the narrator....or indeed the 'you'. It's certainly not about the group themselves. Nobody left the group. They all decided to take 'a break'. A very long one.

I think Agnetha is a very sensible woman in the life. And since a divorce with Bjorn something was broken in the group. After Frida and Benny have divorce also and little by little it makes the séparation of the group and in this last song they do together, Agnetha try to Say that she is the begining of the end of the group by a divorce with Bjorn and since this time her life of every dans is sad and with no aim like she say at the end of the song. I don't think that it's really her life of every days that she sing in this song, i think she just want to say to her fan that she is hungry and also that she as not meet another man like Bjorn and i thik so that she still love him but he was remarried. I don't know the cause of they divorce but i'm sure that she have a lot of regrets about this. This song is for me the best of the group and Agnetha as you say in your reacts is really full of sadness and pain and hier performance is exceptionnal.i love this woman in all the song that she had sing with ABBA she give the best of herself Always. 😰😰😰❤️❤️❤️❤️

Nobody ever mentions the reference to Marilyn French. She was an American radical feminist author. It's such a juxtaposition with the story of the song and an insight into why she didn't realise what love was. Ms. French's work includes many famous quotations but the ones that strike me in relation to the lyrics are "Desire consumes you, it takes over you ," and "And there are so much easier ways to destroy a woman. You don't have to rape her or kill her; you don't even have to beat her. You can just marry her" so the notion that the woman in the song has been without ever knowing it, has hidden herself in feminist teachings from desire and from love. The sadness is a reflection of wasted years of believing that to be a modern (1980s) woman you need to isolate yourself from your emotions and your physicality. When she falls in love, she doesn't feel happiness, but sadness as her previous life wasn't a reflection of what she wanted. It's very interesting for a pop song to examine themes that question the political ideas of when they were written. ABBA do this on many songs on their later LPs and on Voyage I am amazed at the complexity of ABBA.

Great music can just impact you deeply sometimes eh. There's a lot to this song, and some of it is about circumstances that happened, but not to them. Although obviously there own events inspired them. For example some say this song with its melancholy tone brings into question the story of a women who had a mundane life, but how this is of course far better than having something coming in and disrupting it for the worse. Perhaps even being murdered by this new comer the day he came. But it could be about the group and the tragedy of their divorces in metaphor in part too. But the group always respected one another, and at times loved each other deeply, and now again love each other deeply, but in a way of friendship having reconciled. They are making new music as we speak, although in their 70s. The first lot to be made and released since they disbanded back in 83 (some music they made back then was released later, even though they were no longer together). "The way old friends do" live at wembley is a song that can bring comfort about them together and the love they had, after a song like this.

The song has many interpretations, most legitimate. However, I do not believe the story has anything to do with the group ABBA. Agnetha was and is brilliant not only as a singer but as a conveyor of emotions. Don't forget that Bjõrn wrote the lyrics and he was her ex/husband. She was not forced to sing the songs. She could look sad because the lyrics were sad. That does not mean necessarily that they reflected her position nor that Börn had any personal knowledge. He is just brilliant with lyrics. Agnetha never had a humdrum existence as depicted either before, during or after ABBA. That is the miracle of ABBA - the ability to create joy and sadness in the same song - expressing the Swedish fascination with melancholia.

It's a great song but your interpretation is completely wrong. The song has nothing to do with the group. I'm not sure you fully understood the lyrics, it's not a song about going through anything, or anything bad happening to her. The song is about a woman recalling the boring everyday events of her life before someone came into her life. It's a strange song, it has no chorus and it sounds sad and depressing although apparently the woman has now found someone.

Agree that it's not about the group. And yes, she has found someone - who is probably abusing her. She is trying to convince herself that her life before he came was very boring.
