Thangka is of nepalese origin which was brought to Tibet from nepal, as vajrayana buddhism originating in kathmandu spread to Tibet. Also attributed to Bhrikuti a devout buddhist newari princess who was married to the tibetian king who took many artists and art from kathmandu. And the first thangkas were created in tibet. She is also revered as green tara. Her husband tongsen gompo was the one who made tibet a buddhist state.

Adding to this the fact that thangka paintings facilitated the meditative experience by serving as pictorial guides for proper posture and clothing, uniform iconometry probably helped in standardising ways of worship across the expanse of Tibetan Buddhism.
