Brilliant. I've been really looking forward to this one. This case was all over the news when I was just starting high school and it's only now - despite the extensive media coverage - that I realise just how sheltered I was from the terrifying reality of what happened. As always - great podcast guys. Keep up the good work. 👍
@PaulA-yw6lx3 жыл бұрын
Do you remember any of the initial news coverage, or indeed what your parents and adults around you were saying about the case? It would be fascinating to hear a firsthand experience from when all this happened; and as children we perceive things very differently to when we are adults. I'd love to hear more about your story of hearing the news and what the atmosphere was like at the time though, perhaps how you understood it as a child? Sorry to be so inquisitive, and thank you.
@BridAnderson3 жыл бұрын
@@PaulA-yw6lx There were only a few TV channels back then and no one had the internet as we know it today. I only became aware of the case when Rose West was on trial (after Fred West's suicide) and they showed pastel drawings of her on the news as court photos weren't allowed. The talk was generally of murder...I don't remember any details of the killings being shared but it's possible I was just sheltered from it. It's only years later - and similarly with the Bulger killings - that I have found out what actually happened thanks to podcasts and the likes of Wikipedia. Scary stuff...although it does make for a good ICMAP!

@@BridAnderson Thank you kindly for your response, it's enlightening as to the period of time in which the news broke.
@maneckineckbeard17493 жыл бұрын
@@BridAnderson I had a similar sounding experience- I knew that *something* very important and horrifying was going on, but the adults around me generally sheltered me from most of the details, and so I just knew there was something important enough for the adults to whisper about. For whatever reason, though, I do very clearly remember the Shipman "Doctor Death" case being in the news, and I think it was around the same time. Maybe I wasn't as sheltered because he killed mostly older ladies, and the adults around me didn't feel that would be as traumatic as hearing about a case where parents tortured & murdered their own children? (Just thinking of it from my perspective now, as a parent myself...and I can totally see wanting to shelter my kids MUCH more from a case involving parents killing children than from one about a doctor killing grannies during housecalls.)
@PaulA-yw6lx3 жыл бұрын
@@maneckineckbeard1749 Sorry to sound like a broken record; but do you remember news reports on the TV with Harold Shipman? in papers at that time; how adults reacted or others around you, or more importantly *you* felt?

It’s hard to believe monsters like this exist especially in the uk I vividly remember this case unfolding on the news as a kid this and the James Bulgur case are the two main big news events I remember as a kid Great episode as usual lads 👍
@spanglelime3 жыл бұрын
I think I was pretty sheltered as a kid. I just had other interests and didn't pay attention to the news because it was boring. I was about 7-8 for the Bolger case, and 10 for this one. I think I watched Newsround and that was it. I am sure my parents remember all of this going down at the time though. Kind of glad this all went over my head back then. I was a very empathetic child, and would have consumed me if I'd known and understood.

It can’t just be me that had 0 clue this case was as dark as this? I thought they killed the odd person and buried them at the house which is bad enough but jfc this is possibly the most horrendous case I’ve ever heard. Another fantastic video fellas! I've not watched the entire video yet, in the process, but Rose West's behaviour in prison and how she dangled evidence and the placement of bodies/burials in front of the police for a lesser sentence (or I would imagine, better living conditions in prison), makes me think that she was actually the ring leader; and she was definitely smarter than Fred; generally (not always) in cases like this it seems that the female partner is smarter and far better at hiding any sick impulses and urges they have. I think that unfortunately, this was a match made in hell. A violent man with sexually perverted fantasies, and a woman who shared some of those, but was also able to manipulate and control Fred in many ways. Also, didn't they both turn on each other as soon as they were arrested?... And that was their idea of a 'loving marriage'?! Congrats on your own marriage too Tom... just don't be killing people and burying them on the Moors this time :p Otherwise, I hope and am sure you will be very happy.
