Dan this is so true. In 2009 I was traveling on a wet winter day where it was raining. It was night time and I was driving 65mph..the posted speed limit. I was watching my outside temp gauge and noticed the temp had dropped from 33° to 31° and I remember thinking well that's below the freezing temp so this rain could turn to black ice quick. I came up to a bridge and the second I hit the bridge deck it went from wet to black ice and I lost control of my truck at 65mph. I had no control of the vehicle as I slide sideways across the entire deck of the bride that was elevated above train tracks. Once I hit the other side of the bride, I also hit dry pavement and had my wheels cranked to counter the slide and it shot me back across the lane toward the ditch like a rocket so I countered again and saved it coming to a stop on the shoulder with some hefty whiplash but how I didn't roll is beyond me! By all rights I should have rolled ass over head again and again. Luckily nobody was along side me. Once I started driving again, after I caught my breath, counted my blessings etc..the road was not all black ice and I had many miles to get home. 4wd didn't help me. I was in a big dodge ram and I went in the ditch two times before I made it home that night. Worst roads I've ever driven on and I'm from a place where terrible winter travel is common but ice is a whole different animal. I don't who you are or what you drive..glare ice is deadly. I'd rather drive thru 12" of snow than ice. Sorry for the lengthy story. Just wanted to share. Great educational stuff man!

I never do, I just assume icy bridge conditions when applicable and coast across no problem. Hitting brakes causes the potential of losing control before the bridge and making it worse.

It isn't just on traditional bridges, but on overpasses as well. And those are abundant in the US. Just follow the directions described at about the mid-way point when approaching a bridge or overpass, and you should be fine. Also, in order to only need to let off the accelerator to slow down, you should already be going slower than normal.

The DOTs should be putting saline before the storms, not during; get out the salters. Get winter tyres for vehicles, pickups slow down with no weight in back box. Learn your gears, automatic transmission suk in winter. Stuck? Use rock and roll.

You forgot to mention FROST this happens at any time day or Night Usually toward morning, But Can Happen any Time. I worked for The Iowa DOT Maintenance and seen many times a Bridge will become Frosty and the roadway Dry. Good Video though. The Main thing is Do NOT hit your Brakes, You are Totally out of Control Then. Another Thing is Anti-Lock Brakes do not work on Ice, Frost or Snow without something to grip, like Sand and/or Salt. Also Remember Salt does Nothing below 22 Degrees, it Will NOT melt Frost, Snow or Ice.

In Minnesota the biggest weather hazard is the 1/4” snowfall. At the first inkling of white precipitation, all the idiots who can’t tell the difference between a snowflake and a blizzard shift into panic mode and become white-knuckle drivers who then become roadblocks to any respectful normal flow of traffic. A depth of snow less than the wear-bars on your tires is enough to gum up the freeways and add a half-hour to your commute. It doesn’t help that the weather boobs punch up the predictions to gain viewers and thus add to the fear factor. I tell my friends in the Twin Cities to take the NWS forecast and multiply it by 0.4 to get closer to the actual amount. That formula works out about 90% of the time. Sometimes I will go higher than the forecast because I see things the weather people forgot about but 0.4 is usually pretty accurate for snow.

Be AWARE that SANDED bridges are slick even AFTER the ice has melted and is NO LONGER a threat! Sand can be JUST AS DANGEROUS as ice after it builds up on a bridge when its laid during an ice incident! Slow down on these same bridges! If there is any VISIBLE sand on a roadway or bridge, be especially careful! Ask any motorcyclist how dangerous SAND can be!!!! It's the same for a car or truck for the same reason!!! Good luck and be AWARE!

03.30 You forgot to mention one Important thing, don't use yr brakes, because you loose completely control over yr car. Try to stear where you want to go and go off the gas or put yr car in neutral, to do so, you disconnet the traction on the road and you will have control over yr car.

Every cop I’ve ever known gets super irritated if people move their cars from the original stopping position after a fender bender before the cops have a chance to arrive. But you said to move the car off of the road if it’s possible. Have you ever heard of cops wanting people to stay wherever they end up after a slide-out & if so do you just disagree w/ their sentiment?

Many states have laws now requiring that non-disabled vehicles be moved from the travel lanes of high speed roads as long as there are no injuries. In the case of an icy bridge, follow-up collisions are a very high risk to both the original driver and the ones approaching the scene. Most officials would encourage moving away from the danger zone if the vehicle is driveable.

Can ABS and TC (or similar) help in these situations?
@ksrele7 жыл бұрын
***** I have read somewhere that ABS don't work on ice.. and someone said that stoping distance on snow is longer with ABS... I'm confused
@thecheeta7 жыл бұрын
Sometimes. If the road isn't completely iced over, and it is just wet or snow-covered, TC can work to stabilize the vehicle, and ABS works to reducing braking distances by maximizing the coefficient of friction between the tire and the road surface. But once you get on a completely slick surface, all bets are off. If there is nothing to get traction on, all of the ABS and TC in the world will do absolutely nothing for you, especially at normal travelling speeds. Both TC and ABS systems often rely on feedback from the tire itself (i.e., based on known conditions, the tire should be moving X speed at this point in time). On ice, that feedback is not available. This especially applies to older ABS and TC systems. But, even with modern systems, if there is no real friction between the tire and the surface it is on in the first place, there's literally nothing the systems can do.

abs and TC do nothing but hinder your car if you are a competent driver.
@TheTimeCapturer7 жыл бұрын
I agree 100%. Driving on snow, the ABS helps to keep the back end from coming around, but on ice, it causes more control issues than it solves. This has been my experience as a Canadian driver that sees both conditions annually.

Hi Dan, as a Dutchman I can really appreciate the importance of what you're doing raising awareness on road icing! You might appreciate this Dutch *classic* on how, as you put it, "the simple presence of your vehicle on our near the road could trigger more accidents." Somebody standing on the pavement is actually almost hit by their own car when it gets struck by an out of control station wagon. Mind you, this is on a normal street with a speed limit of 50 km/h. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3jLm3qMi6udi9U "Keiglad" (means "bloody slippery")

In Quebec, this would be just another day as we're used to these conditions, and road crews are quick to salt the roads, plus snow tires are required by law over the winter months, but I imagine it's less frequently encountered down south so folks are less prepared.
@MemphisMojo15s5 жыл бұрын
Depends where you live. There are a lot of places in the US and mid Atlantic areas that get as much, and sometimes more snow and ice, than in Canada. Not all places in Canada have a law that you are required to use snow tires. I've traveled to the state of TN a lot and they are southern and they have an area in the mountains there that I've visited that requires either 4WD with good tires, snow tires, or chains. Snow and ice is not limited to Canada and neither are drivers that know what they're doing. Just look at my videos and snow tire reviews.

I guess bc I live in an area where there is higher elevation, and we are more adapt to driving in bad weather conditions. The worst thing you can do is hit your brakes on ice. Doesn’t matter if you have 4 wheel drive, front or back. You are screwed on ice. Keep your speed low and don’t hit your breaks no matter what.
