We used to build these boats 80 years ago at my uncle Fonzu, Birgu, " il- Mahzen", 30, Quarter Front Street. There were other builders I knew of, Tunanu, Kukla, Del Ceppo and Pule', tar- Ratal they seem to be from Birgu. Bormla, Marsa, Kalkara. Birzebugia. There were a few others in Gozo, ( Gauci) but they dwindled as the wooden traditional boat lost popularity, (high maintenance, lack of wood and skills). I remember building the following boats, It is interesting that in the Maltese language we do not have a word equivalent to " Boat" We use the words, "Qoxra", " Bicca tal-bahar", "Opra tal-bahar". Once I suggested that "a boat" should be called "Karraffa", but it never caught on. Types of traditional wooden " open" boat in Malta, all displacement hulls, described as :- Dghajsa ta' Ghawdex (never built one of these as they were too big for us, ( 40 to 50 feet) Pointed ends. Luzzu , coastal fishing boat, powered with oars, lateen sail or engine ( we built up to 21 feet) Pointed ends Firilla , coastal fishing, narower, faster craft than a Luzzu. ( up to 30 feet) never built one of these Pointed ends Kajjik, a truncated Luzzu, hence it has a transom....... we used to call it Kajjik tal-Gangmu, defining the type of catch it sought.( up to 20ft) Dghajsa tal pass, this was an inshore passenger boat used in the Grand Harbour or Marsamxett, ( 21 feet long) ( 24 feet dhajsa tal- midalji) pointed ends Frejgatina , a small " family boat up 14 feet, with oars, lateen sail, small Stuart Turner engine 1.5 Horse Power and others engines, with treansom Gig, a slender frejgatina up to 14 feet. for passenger use. With transom Baghal ta gig, a wider gig to get to the fishing ground faster ( inshore use) With transom. Bimbu was small luzzu the size of a frejgatina, with pointed bow and stern, fuller bow and not much flare, It was a woek boat, sturdier and more stable than a frejgatina. The latter was also with flare at the bows and looked "prettier" than a bimbu. Lanca, a small family cruiser with engine, Long sleek , up to 24 feet, Family Rolls Royce, planked with varnished mahogany. With transom, semi planning hull. It had a half deck up front, with interlaced woods of different colour and about 10 coats of shiny varnish. It was the family show piece! now replaces by the family stately car, not the sport car but a craft which radiate elegance and projected a majestic look. Dingy, tender for bigger boat Kenura, canoe. Terminology used in the passenger boat called Dghajsa. There are others used for Luzzu. Kajjik etc. as battilar, flare which the passenger boat shown in the video does not have, . Prim, Gheluq, Burdnari, Tappiera, Kurtuni, Pastiera, Suprasola, Bastun ta' l-izgoxx. majjiera, stamnara, brazzoli, sniegel, skazza. Majjieri, Stamnari bit-testatur, Zaqq, Murati. Majjieri ta' quddiem jharso l- ura, w dawk ta wara jharsu il- quddiem. Battusa, Battusa Regina, Ornat, Makaruunetta Torka. Laghqa, Skazza, bardnel. Poppa, Kannol rota tal poppa. Spalliera, Falki, Ljuni, Settijiet skulturati fix xifer, bil- puntal taghhtom, Bank, Tamburett, kursijjja, Skalm, Parjol jew paljol. Caghan , L-iljuni jew denfil ( Sculpted decorations) il- bardnel, il- laghqa fuq il bardnel, Il- makkarunetta forma tal- ljun ornat, it- termina il falka viva bejn l- spalliera u Muxxullatura , jew Tork fil luzzu w Kajjik ,lis- skalmuttar, il- grupp tal-falki. It- tinda, Izati, issatti, arki, battaljoli, il- kanvas. Tiskacca l- musmar u ntaqqbu bil- fisfisel qabel ma' nsammru l-gheluq mal- majjiera jew lis-stamnara. Nirbuzaw ic- cinta bil-klincijiet mal musmar.tar-ram. fil frejgatini, giggijiet, Kavilja , stopwater, Palelli, moqdief, giljun, pala, strop tal- hamsgha, tas- sebgha, tad- disgha.
