I own one Rolex watch, a 41mm Oyster Perpetual with black dial. I don't want or need another Rolex. It is a watch of quality, it is subtle and understated, and it defies the Rolex stereotype of ostentation. Perfection.

Agreed - the single batons look much better balanced, both in pics & in real life. I was very lucky in being able to get one of the new 2020 OP's from my AD, when it got released a few months ago. The single batons look fantastic in the metal. I suspect one of the reasons we respond well to the single baton version is that we see that classic dial design everywhere in airports & big cities which have Rolex AD's. The single baton dial is what's used on those big, oversized clocks in front of a Rolex boutique or in airport waiting areas. I like the OP dial single baton design over even an Explorer dial. The design is UR Rolex, whereas I find the typography for the current Explorer is already looking dated. The single baton design, on the other hand, has held up admirably, over the decades. If the 36mm fits you well, but you don't like the double batons, try the 34mm. I tried the 36mm and 34mm of the previous generation OP's before my current OP 34mm arrived, and I was surprised at how much I preferred the 34mm. The 36mm fit me fine, but the 34mm was even better. Fits under the cuff nicely, I barely notice I'm wearing it throughout the day. The size difference between the two is barely distinguishable. Also, the 34mm OP case apparently wears more like a vintage 36mm Explorer (1016). The case is, relatively speaking, beefy. And the lugs don't slope a lot, until the very last mm or so. Since I got it, the 2020 OP has become my daily work watch. It's a tasteful, understated, very under the radar piece. Highly recommended.
@nathanf32304 жыл бұрын
I agree, the single batons are nicer than the doubles. But the 3,6,9 dial of the Explorer (especially the 36mm) is the bees knees. That Explorer dial lay out, plus the Mercedes hands is 🤤

41. I haven't seen one wrist shot or roll of the OP 41 where it doesn't look too big. We focus on lug to lug but the dial size and bracelet size make such an impact. Hafitz compared the maxi case sub to the Explorer 39. The Ex 39 looks basically the same size despite the girth of the Sub case/lugs because of it's 2mm larger face. He did the DJ41 and the OP41 as well and the DJ looks fine but because of the 33mm dial, the OP heads into pilot watch territory. The 36 OP is it and looks properly SUBstantial because the bracelet and dial are the same dimensions as the Sub. Looks right, is right. Cheers. Great video.

Your point made at 6:27 about "the essence of good design being as little design as possible" has foretold the Oyster Perpetual's longevity. And I agree with your closing point about "the basic organic function of telling time" serving as the principal characteristic of the OP. I have consciously decided that a future Rolex for me will be an OP. My preference has always been the 116000 with Arabic numerals. Yet now, the 34mm is drawing my attention and desire. As 2020 comes to a close, your story about the OP and its design IDGuy is a masterpiece to shutter this year of tribulation and thrust the community into hope for the New Year.

Hello. Your analysis on timepieces is extraordinary. I agree that the 39, especially back and white, should not have been removed. They are timeless. Your mention that the new OP is more of an accessory is on point. I was on a list for a white 39 and cannot fathom paying the grey market prices right now. Hoping they will soften.

Thank you Jonathan. It was great looking into all of these in more detail. As for the 39's... such a fail... and I'm sorry that you were one of the victims. Sometimes all it takes a few distractions and less overthinking to bring that enjoyment back again. Watches to me have always been a conduit for so many other things and I cannot wait to dig deeper. @@ID-Guy Cheers. Been following along for about a yearish. I landed on your channel from desperately looking up info on the white dial 116500ln, it is, unobtainable. I have talked to my AD, in the works for the Tudor Chrono S&G which I love! I seriously really like it alot - and I normally don't like yellow gold, or two tone, or black dials - but it just works. The dial dots I don't mind, but my only critique I can add to is yes, the snow-flake hour hand is a bit much. I otherwise am trying to (in lieu of waiting sooner for a 116500) hoping to get a 116519ln, the WG with grey(silver) dial on a Oysterflex, which has won me over even more than the 500ln! I think in obtaining that, it may be down to a "one-watch-collection" for me - though I'll love the Tudor (even eyeing the BB58), would love a OP, Explorer, and eventually a Sub ND, and a Sub Bluesy... and a Patek 5119g... but then, we're talking too many and too much. I'd be happy indeed with the 116519 - just as 116500 at retail, but for the grey market prices (and my conversion rates [CAD] ) I might as well try for a WG at retail vs SS on grey.

I really wanted a 36mm OP ("steel" or white dials with arabic numbers - pre 2020)... But the way this Rolex craze is going, by the time I manage to save up (a few years at least), it is likely to be out of my price range again! It's frustrating and makes me want to stick with Hamilton / Omega and micro brands... It's a shame that prices can't be steady, and at some point when I see a mark-up of 20-50% on the grey market, I start to wonder "What else could I get for £6000 ! Is that really worth it??!??!".... Frustrated with this brand to be honest. Yes - beautiful watches, but also a lot of stress trying to even see one in the flesh ! Maybe that's why so many people are going crazy for them - the harder it is to get, the more you want one...

Hey Idguy a question, Since you are into guitars do you see watch manufacturers going down routes of "relicing" watches? With faux patina and older case and dial design being somewhat in trend at the moment I wonder if we will see companies take steps to recreate popular watches all the way down to the fine details. I know when it started on guitars it was highly criticized but now companies like fender have special divisions dedicated solely to making high spec recreations. I even saw some micro brand that pre-"damages" watches. would like to hear your thoughts on something that would probably never happen.
@ID-Guy4 жыл бұрын
There's such a similarity between guitars and watches in this area, it's uncanny. just got back into them recently and started watching a lot more guitar content - considering starting a channel for guitars as a sideline gig ;) But the "Relic" and "Heavy Relic" and "Vintage Reissues" feel so true to what we see with watches. Imagine they do go to the length of literally beating them up and selling them as new? Something tells me that brands wouldn't go that far for watches... we are dealing with "jewellery" here instead of "instruments" but a fascinating notion! I'd love to make a video about it! Thank you for the question around this!
@lobos8874 жыл бұрын
@@ID-Guy Thanks for the reply! You are right they're are quite a bit of similarities between the two, popular designs dating back to the 50s-70s that fit well in modern styles. I would agree that it would be hard pressed to see anyone beating up a fine piece of jewelry to match a popular product of older days, but it would be interesting to see if anyone had the idea or the nerve to try. Hoping you start the guitar channel it would be nice to hear your thoughts on those too!

Great video thanks! I think the Stella (esque) new dials on the Oyster Perpetuals come on the back of Rolex’s lawsuit against La Californienne, that offered bright colorful dials on original Rolexes. They won the lawsuit and either they wanted to tap into that very successful market and get the Californienne clients back to the home brand?

These 41's may not last long. I can see them stepping the size down to a 39 and anyone who was lucky enough to get a 41 in a wacky color is going to see 1 color from now on....gold. they will be worth a ton.

Op39 whote for me. I sold my dj41 for it and have no regrets. I love it.

"Entry level models" ( I don't like the expression but let's say say) are on waiting list. Professional are unreachable, is there a remaining watch available on Rolex catalogue ? I have a 369 OP36 and NO WAY I exchange it against the new models (except the silver maybe).

The advantage of Rolex is that you can have the dial exchanged for anther colour if you don't like it anymore. So I guess it is always a good idea to get one of the more extravagant colours especially since they are so sought after right now.

Black and white dial 114200s have always been the apple of my eye. I have the 2018-2020 black dial and it's a much better option than the 2020 black dial variant with the Roman numerals, larger crown, and smaller movement.

It’s a Rolex Oyster Perpetual, not OP34, OP36, OP39 or OP41 😊

I’m on the waiting list for the medium size in black. If I receive one, it will be my first and last Rolex. I opted for the medium size as it will be passed down to my daughter one day. I wanted a subtle heirloom watch, nothing flash.

Have you gotten it yet? I put my name down for a 36mm silver dial OP. First Rolex very clean and low key.

Killer to this Omega Aqua terra and has gold with diamonds for the price of this simple oyster perpetual.

Love my dark rhodium OP 39, so comfortable, so minimalist, beautiful simplicity, so purely a Rolex.

The new OP 41 is a hard pass! I don't do anything over 40 mm on any watch other than divers, aviation watches, and G-Shock squares.

I have never purchased a watch on Chrono 24 as I generally find their prices uncompetitive. Not to say you can't find good deals here and there from private sellers, but due to their high fees they are hardly a fair barometer of the market price.

hey, what would be the ideal case size for a 6.8 to 7 inches wrist size?? "I don't like big chunky watches" is exactly why I have been looking at the OPs, i mean even if i had the money for a different model, i would have still gone for an OP due to its subtle understated "not-in your face" design.

Do you think the White 39 OP will continue rising given it was 39 AND white AND that this combination was only produced for 2 years? or will it go back to more reasonable prices once the "hype" dies a little? Should I hold on to mine or exchange it for a brand new Explorer 39 as I was planning to do pre discontinuation?

Thank you for this excellent and engaging video treatise! I have long wanted to make this comment, and I hope everyone will read and "get it!": Why are we always supposed to refer to the OP as an "entry level" watch? I resent it, and auger for the disposition of such an INSULTING moniker! It is a beautiful watch, nothing "entry level" about it.
@rodamos79793 жыл бұрын
Agreed... spending +5k for a watch is nowhere close to being an “entry level” watch

I think think the new colours are great , it may also entice owners to collect all the colours . It is also something new (disregarding stella) and possibly something to be introduced to the datejusts / daydates in the future??

Genuinely debating whether I want to support Rolex‘ practices with scarcity .... However, this in 36 or the Explorer 36 are something I can’t seem to find equally as good! There’s always something missing with other brands I feel like... Any suggestions?

The new ref in yellow and turquoise are really interesting to me, but it's incredible the premium you should pay to have them.

Removing the 39mm was a mistake, I think Rolex knows they can play with the market no matter what they release, to me their advantage is eroding lately over other manufacturers that are more focused on things that matter than on colors / variations. Increasing the sub from 40 to 40.3 is a good way to cover the maxi case mistake, and coming out with this dial variations helps them do that, I think that the new ops (except black and silver) are competing for a luxury fashion brand (unfortunately); the didn’t need to get rid of the 39 neither get rid of the older dials entirely, but they own the market, they can do as they pleased and people are dumb enough to pay for that, great content, thank you!

The 36mm and most 41mm are par for the course for the most part. It's the 41mm in turquoise that shot up in value.
