I was just graduated from High School, a Physics major and amateur Astronomy buff. " Mars by 1985" they cried, and I thought I was just the right age for that mission..,,now I'm nearly 70 and still waiting. We haven't lost the technology, we lost the will to go. The first man on Mars will be Chinese.

I love that you honored this wonderful achievement and the 50th anniversary with this talented model build. My Father worked on the Apollo 11 program and I am also an Electrical Engineer. I Remember this event as a child. It was amazing and I was sure we’d have flying cars and robots (at home) by this time in my life. Oh well :) What’s interesting is that 7miles/sec in space is possible because there is no atmosphere and therefore resistance is minimized allowing non-aero dynamic objects to travel at such speeds. I agree that we need to move forward with more space exploration and companies like SpaceX are helping to move things in this direction. Your accent is pleasing so don’t worry about pronunciation. Thank you for such a wonderful posting and showing your beautiful model! Kind Regards, Pat

You will love this joke that Neil Armstrong told at Purdue's dedication of the Armstrong Engineering Building, also attended by Gene Cernan, the Commander of Apollo 17: (Forgive me if you have heard it), he said, " An optimist sees a glass as half full, a pessimist sees it as half empty, an engineer sees it as twice as big as it needs to be."

Great work as always David. Adam Savage mentioned in his Lego Lunar lander build video that at ILM they tested a bunch of different materials for a film to see what most resembled the foil NASA used, and it turned out what matched it exactly was the gold wrappers from Rolo Choclates. They bought a ton of them and flattened out the wrappers to use on their models in the film!

Great build as usual! Regarding the broader discussion at the end of the video, I think the biggest impediments to space exploration are political will and who pays for it. Those same factors plagued early NASA back then as they do now. The development of all the programs and tech leading into Apollo was done from post WWII through the mid-sixties. With social unrest, racial problems, Vietnam, etc, etc all pulling at the nation, many people leading didn't want to spend the money then, just as there's questions on spending the money now. I hope future missions and programs shift entirely to the private sector, unhindered by whatever leaders or administrators impose.

Nice work! Finally got a chance to watch this video. :-) I also like what you did at the end with the black and white video to make it look like a TV broadcast :-)

I was six when I saw the Moon landing in 1969 - and it was an era of hope and excitement. This build brought back all kinds of pleasant memories of a simpler, less troubled time (at least for me as a child...).

This is excellent video. I was wondering how I was going to build my own model, and I like your approach to the gold Mylar. Thank you for this.
