Very cool. Much love and respect to these folks from a retired Canadian Paratrooper in Alberta. Love the jumping sequences. Had a few jumps like that myself.

Smokejumpers are courageous men and women! They give their all to save people like you and me from harm. My grandson inspired me so much with his love of working with the local fire department, that I wrote a song about smokejumpers. May I add it was a labor of love and in the process of this undertaking I learned a lot about fire fighting..

Why do they still use round canopies? Just asking because Ive been paragliding for about 30 yrs and nothing beats a sqare canopy when it comes to precision landing. I did some 20 jumps with round canopies out of planes as well...so I know the difference.
@onfinalproductions83434 жыл бұрын
Markus, I’ve been paraglding for 15 years, instructing for 8, competing for 2. I love the performance with multi celled square/rectangle wings. Rounds have an advantage in small jump spots surrounded by 150ft+ timber. The glide ratio is about 2:1 so you can really sink a canopy in there. Today’s squares can do the same with proper piloting. We’ve transitioned. We jump squares now.

Get fire experience first. Typically, at least 5 years are necessary to have a strong application. It's extremely competitive. Hundreds of qualified applicants. Then, you need to make it through the difficult training - half don't make it. So start by getting hired to work on a fire hand crew. Good luck!

What appears to be a rip in the chute are actually "steering gores" giving the chute some positive airspeed.

@@onfinalproductions8343 that’s a shity pay for fighting a fire. a mcdonald worker makes $15 flipping burger where i’m at and the only risk they get is possible burn from the fryer or grill. let the fires reach homes and they will know how valuable you are and not worth the $18. personally i wouldn’t do that work for $18 there are much safer and easier work that pays more. unless you just don’t care about the money or your a adrenaline junky.

The size of their balls must be a real nuisance when fighting the fire and because of that the jumps are risky too because of the enormous weight.

I remember working fires with these guys from 2000-2003. Some of the best people you will ever meet. I remember one fire in particular when they had the first stick out the door break a femur, second one broke a leg. Another set of jumpers went out and one of them broke either a hip or back, can’t remember exactly. Anyways, the wind was really high that day and it played hell on them. You had to be crazy to want to be a jumper.

Why don't they use fastrope insertion? (research)
@onfinalproductions83433 жыл бұрын
Fastropping implies the use of helicopters. We are used most in Alaska where the fire could be several hundred miles away. We do use help-repellers too but more so in the lower 48.

Unlikely because we drive in different lanes. Actually, better to think of us on different highways. We still have the same destination, fire management, but smokejumping by federal land agencies, has been around since the 1940's. There's enough of us to meet current needs although when we're at a Planning Level 5 nationwide we have to be a little more selective and involve more contractors

You guys are still jumping rounds??? WTF - they obviously don't care about your landing
@LaneLamoreaux4 ай бұрын
We stopped jumping rounds decades ago. Furthermore, our rounds were not standard. They were highly maneuverable because of the 4 rear steering gores and the 15mph of airspeed. Injuries on rounds - more frequent. On squares - less frequent but more severe. Trade-offs...

The Forest Service started to reluctantly transition in 2008. It was Mandated from the Washington office in D.C. that all F.S. Bases would be on a single delivery by 2024. It’s still a work in progress with low time square experience. There have been some sad unexpected outcomes due to the inexperience levels flying a square.
