I planted some oldhamii bamboo for quick backyard privacy. Ended up wanting more for the side and found a deal but they said they "think" its oldhamii. Never heard of the flat spot until this video which they dont have. Thank you for this info! Definitely do not want any running problems.

😀 revenge planting, I like it. Phyllostachys atrovaginata is a great plant and once it takes off it grows very fast. Pseudosasa Japonica is also a fast grower. However, the bamboo will not just stay in the hedge, unless you take precautions, they can take over your and your neighbours garden 😉

My eyes are a little glazed over. Your bamboos looks amazing. I love the black cane. Was that one a runner or a clumper? Went to the garden center for the first time yesterday. I don't know why I can't walk out without something in my hands. Looks like another nice day there. We can't seem to get away from the rain and single digits last couple of weeks. I can practically hear the grass growing! 😶

Tammy, the weather here has been shit... ibwas lucky today while taping but it turned shortly after. The black one is a runner and a quick one too. But there are so many ways to control them it you have a few m2 (and you do ) it is work at first but not ongoing... I am braving this one because I don't have a barrier or trench...I am living dangerously (I really need to get a life or a addiction) 😀

i have some seabreeze bamboo and notice flatspots where the branches come out at, but go away once they're slightly older i had it identified to make sure it wasn't a runner and they said seabreeze grows really fast which can create a flat spot

Seabreeze is a sexy bamboo and a clumper, I don't have it, but need to get one now 😀, this is the thing with the flat part on the cane, it is a great indication for the bamboos in general garden centres, I have not seen seabreeze (Bambusa Malingensis) in a garden centre here in Germany, I have however seen a lot lof runners being sold as clumpers (Arrow bamboo, Golden bamboo and so on ).

@@jochen.allardice-grein if you have cold winters count it as a annual plant, i get lots of snow and cold temps here so the canes freeze off but comes back strong in the spring. the long branches are what make seabreeze so nice

Great video!😊 Love bamboo! Do you have any fargesia robusta in your garden? My robusta campbell clump is planted 2 years now and I reckon it's about 3 years growing altogether from it's original pot. Biggest of canes still a little off 6 foot. I know it's meant to reach about 3 meters. Do you think it'd take another 2-3 years to get to this height?
@jochen.allardice-grein
@jochen.allardice-grein Жыл бұрын
Thank you 😊, I don't have a robusta but it is a great plant, they gain in speed and height over the years, as you said in 2-3 years it should be mature enough to reach the height.

Nice video. when did you plant your Phyllostachys Vivax Huangwenzhu? What size diameter canes has it produced? Have you see it run by many meters in colder Western Europe climates?
@jochen.allardice-grein
@jochen.allardice-grein Жыл бұрын
The plant has been in for 6 years, but it took a long time to start growing since I only got a 1 meter long rhizome of the plant, with no cains, after the “emergency” canes it produced it took another year before it started to produce canes over 2 meters. However now it has taken on speed and the spreading so far is 3- 5 Meters, where I dug up rhizomes, and they were thick rhizomes. The cases are 4 - 5 cm thick so not too impressive. But each year it is getting more powerful.

@@jochen.allardice-grein Thanks for your reply. I planted a 110 litre pot (semi mature) 2 years ago and have not seen any significant running so far. Your video is the first bamboo video I have seen that uses rhizome trenches. That is a great isea. I am excited to see if my one runs much. I have been told that this cultivar can produce 3 inch thick canes in colder climates after about 5 years. There are no new shoots yet this year, so I look forward to seeing what it produces this summer. Keep up the great work.

@@dustymeehan5984 You are very welcome, what I found with this one what some of the rhizomes are deeper than with other running bamboo, the deepest was 35 cm. which is deep, also don't forget that first year they are sleeping 3 year creeping and 5 year leaping, so your bamboo should star to creep now and get's faster each year.

You talked too quickly for me to get it 100%. Which is WAY better than many who talk too slowly for theatrical effect. Could you please clarify for me? The running type, are their roots "generally" shallow? Meaning, with a bit of effort, they can be dug out or dug back for control? Thanks. I also tapped the thumbs up 👍 button to feed the algorithm monsters.

😂 thank you and this is me talking slow 😂To answer your Question, yes the rhizomes are usually quite shallow, I have a few videos about it as well th´ry this one (kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4jXlnarr8yHr7M) and thank you for feeding the algorithm monster, that means a lot to me 👍

What barrier options do we have for Phyllostachys or any running bamboo. I’m doing a landscaping job for a friend and his dad has asked about getting me in to check out a 30 ft bamboo he has it’s grown in a few months not sure what to do with it or what type it is. Any help is appreciated I have got until the week after next.
@jochen.allardice-grein

You can buy a specific Bamboo rhizome barrier HDPE barrier, I would use the 2mm thick and 90 cm or 1 m wide one, you need to dig it in but leave about 10 cm coming out of the top otherwise the rhizomes will grow above the barrier. Also get the Metal closing bracket and make sure you close it properly here is a video where I show that and what happens when you don’t (kzbin.info/www/bejne/apuvlHtuirNqpck). Does the bamboo have small or large leaf’s? any colouring on the canes? Send me some pics if you can. Hope that helps a bit. Jochen
