In this video I'm trying to identify the people in this ca. 1887 photo handed down to me from my Madsen family from Laramie, WY. This is part one. There are a lot of lessons to learn as I do this research.

Here's a tip for easier navigation of your research notes. If you make each date as a Heading 1 (on the Home tab), then go to the View tab and click the Navigation Pane box, you will get all the Headings on the left side of the screen. You can scroll those dates easier there than inside the document, especially if your document is very long. Click the one you want to jump to that part of the document. You can also grab one and move it around on the list. When you move the Heading this way, all of the text under it moves also. All of your footnotes will adjust accordingly.

Great tip. I have done this and then also added a table of contents at the top of the page when research notes get too long.

I work with 2 screens.. The one from the laptop and a monitor I had for my old desktop. Link together and it works great. One screen would be files you have open to refer back on and the other is the working" screen.

I have Swedish great grandparents who migrated to Australia in the 1870s. Both abandoned using the patronymic naming system before they sailed from Hamburg. My great grandfather had been assigned a place name during his army service and used both his -son name and assigned place name, but his wife and Australian born children only used the place name. My great grandmother's family migrated in two groups via Denmark (where my g grandmother spent 10 years). They went from being -sons and -dotters in Sweden to all being -sens in Denmark and then took on a variation of the place they had come from in Sweden. In Australia my gg grandfather father always used both his Danish --sen name with the place name, while the rest of the family just used the place name once they migrated. What I really like about the Swedish version of the patronymic naming system is that the wife always has the same name, but on the other hand you really need a precise birth date and place, to be able to verify that you have the correct Nils Jönson or Nlla Pälsdotter.

I thought it was an interesting little side note on the directory page where Christopher Madsen is listed is an advertisement titled "The Swastika Store" selling "curios, art goods, penants, newspapers, post cards, stationery, cigars and tobacco". You never know what you are going to see.😉

Possibly Denmark does what Norway and Sweden do, Wolbol could be a farm name. I have seen evidence of this a few times in my research. Surname was Larsson in Norway but Lundgren was the farm name. You can have several different families with that farm name who are not related. Anyone who lived on that farm would adopt that name. 🤷‍♀️

I think you might be right. I was told that it had to do with the place Hvolbol.

Interesting on the City Directory database, using the Browse this Collection for Wyoming, Laramie, there is a 1908 directory. Madsen is image 21. Looks like the 1908 wasn’t indexed?

You probably already knew, but new researchers might have needed to add to the research list to check to see when the current Wyoming county was formed. 1880-1890 would have been a time of growth and transition in Wyoming.

I looked-up the Gem City Grocery Co store in Laramie, WY on Google maps, and found it on the corner of Grand, at 300 S 2nd Street, as the city directory listed it. The 2024 Google map streetside-view shows it still there, listed as 'Gem City Mercantile'.

Yes, I have a bunch of history on the Jim city grocery store. I should’ve shown it even images from inside. The store is very cool.

I have not known about google lens and how to translate, this info is very helpful as I too have ancestors from Denmark, so thank you Connie 👍 I’m struggling to find any of that family’s birth/baptism records though, even when I research their immediate family. I’ve heard not all churches in Denmark have digitised their records online? I do love this channel finding it very helpful, thank you ☺️ I also subscribe to your main channel 😊
