For some reason, buried sewerage is known to produce horse mushrooms. Guys back in the 60s who emptied "cans" used to make a killing on the weekends selling horse mushrooms at the markets. They weren't telling everyone where they got them from but I know people who knew them.... I have also had some grow on my farm from.... piping issues. Damn things were 3/4 the size of my plate. Blew your ones there right out of the water but only got 4 or 5.

I'm doing a fair amount of foraging at the moment, came across a new venue today with a large number of delicious looking mushrooms. They were under sycamore trees amongst leaf litter and obviously agaricus of some kind. I hadn't come across the two tests shown here. Very useful and my find this morning passes both tests. Thank you

You are an AMAZING source of information. Clear, concise and not talking over anyone's head. I am in upstate NY and have hundreds of these growing up in my lawn after and early August rain. My wife and I are amateur "shroomers" and have just added another edible. So far, lions mane, puff ball, morel, turkey tail, shaggy ink, chicken of the woods and oyster. Thanks so much.

I found a huge ring, approx 12 metre, of horse mushrooms on the chalk downs yesterday, the largest was 10" diameter. I only took the four I needed. I came here to double check and made delicious soup which I had again today for lunch. I'm still alive! Thanks for your videos and advice.

Very easy, found them in my garden, end September, in the grass. First time and I live here almost 40 years! And in a period of 10 days could harvest 3 portions, left some that were touched by snails. Hope they return next year!

Very nice. Want to try them. I live in Missouri in the U.S. Watched a lady with a field mushroom and she injured the mushroom and no stain came forth. She said since there was no stain it was a good mushroom. Is there a smell test for those mushrooms that don't stain. Thank you for being so informative. Love your videos.

A closed capped horse mushroom will also have a cog wheel pattern where the skirt is still attached to the underside of the cap. A good indication of an agaricus itself is that the stem will snap away cleanly from the cap as well. Unless I'm occasionally missidentifying I find that a horse will on a rare occasion throw up an almond scent as well. Not as pungently as a prince. But to my nose its still there. The agaricus family was the 2nd species I made an effort to id. Mainly as i felt on familliar territory from having eaten so many supermarket ones lol

I picked some mushrooms that I think are the Prince. Will you please help me figure out the smell. At first I thought it was pleasant, could swear it was some mixture of anise and almond, but noticed what seemed like an iodine smell. My nose got confused and now I can't tell if it's a pleasant smell or just iodine, or some antiseptic type smell. I cooked them and the antiseptic type of smell seems stronger. I picked them under a cedar sequoia tree here in the Northwest U.S.

Hi Marlow! Your channel is amazing! First time I see British guy who has such a big knowledge about wild mushrooms. I'm from Poland where knowing mushrooms and picking them is very common but I know that legally this is very complicated in UK. Could you make a video about what law says about picking mushrooms in UK?Because I heard lots of rumours about it where is allowed and what quantity. That would be great for foreigners knowledge and other countries. Best Regards! Krzysztof :)

The Horse Mushroom is delicious. We get them in the Northwest in Washington state. For me, I just sauté them in garlic butter and eat them. They taste to me like a prime beef steak. We also get liberty caps in the fall. There are many edible choice fungi in the general area. Especially in and around the Olympic Peninsula. And there are also many varieties of trout/ steelhead and salmon along the Columbia and Cowlitz rivers intersection. And Trout, Onions, Mushrooms and aged cheddar cheese go together quite well in a frying pan. (And never cut the head off a trout, it adds flavor and the eyeballs of a fried trout are a rare delicacy. Suck them right out of the fish head. No fork.)

Do agaric mushrooms bleed yellow if they're picked a bit too mature? I picked 2 today. I don't think their stems are particularly stout. They smell a bit like almonds. I think I've picked horse mushrooms but they're quite dry and once cut in the middle, they have at the top and bottom of the stalk a slightly yellow brownish colour.

I'm confused. Is amanita muscaria/flyagaric an amanita or an agaric. I've had a binge the last couple of days. Thank you for all the gid work you put into the channel 👍❤
@WildFoodUK1
@WildFoodUK1 4 жыл бұрын
It's 'currently' an Amanita, I think the 'Agaric part is a leftover from old taxonomy when all gilled mushrooms were classed as agarics. Hence the 'clouded agaric' which is really a Clitocybe, and the verdigris agaric which is a Stropharia.

I ate what I thought were wood mushrooms for lunch, but either I'm sensitive to them, or I was mistaken. I had one of them from the same place a week ago as a test, and I was feeling fine. Encouraged by this I cooked up a storm, but an hour later I started to feel very burpy, and soon my stomach had emptied itself 😆 They didn't smell bad. But in spite of growing together, they all had a bit different smell from each other. Some was mushroomy, one had a faint hint of aniseed (so I thought it possible they were actually horse mushrooms), some didn't smell at all, and one had a faint smell I can't quite describe. They didn't seem to stain as yellow or as chromatic as the yellow stainer, but maybe I was mistaken. Anyways, I'll give them a skip from now on!

Same thing happened to me. I found what I thought was a horse mushroom that had gone slightly brown but still smelt quite nice but maybe with a hint of a fishy type smell. Not sure if maybe it might have been edible at some stage but then passed it's best before date.

Just a quick one, why is the Amanita Muscaria also known a the Fly Agaric if it isn’t an Agaric?
@Gr0nal
@Gr0nal 4 жыл бұрын
It comes from it's old name. Back in the early days of mushroom classification, it used to be Agaricus muscaria - muscaria from the Latin 'musca' meaning fly. People used to powder Amanita muscaria and mix it in with milk, as a method of killing flies, so it became known as the fly agaric. Paraphrased from wikipedia

Great info. Concise, accurate and not too technical. However, whilst it is sensible to do these tests generally on potential edible mushrooms, does any other mushroom (white agaric with dark gills) get this big? I thought I might have a horse mushroom today, where I have been picking field mushrooms last couple of days, it was nearly 6 inches across. Big for a field perhaps (although most never have chance to get that big as birds seems to enjoy pecking them and the horses kick them over). But I noew realise it is a minnow compared to the horse mushroom.

Careful when using smell to identify mushrooms. I accidentally ate an inedible Acaricus mushroom the other day which gave me some stomach trouble. I really love mushrooms so anything which smells slightly mushroomy is still appealing but now I know the smell of the bad ones I won't be making that mistake again.

The INK mushroom or lions mane, don't know what family but the one with the cap that melts away is WELL KNOWN to be fine. It's an enzyme that makes them self dissolve on maturity AND within about 3 hours of picking. I HAVE HAD them because we have had a lot in the area and they're FINE. Taste creamier than the standard store bought mushroom but HARMLESS.
