Where SSI falls short in my opinion is there is no actual anonymity. This is what is really required in a society that is truely free Part identification is great, but over time, the parts can still be gathered together to create the full identity, even if you control them yourself SSI looks great for the user controlling their own identity and revealing only what they want, but where is the actual anonymity? Zero knowledge proofs still disclose aspects of your identity, they are just obstificated in various ways SSI is a step in the right direction, but how does this solve the rights of an individual to go about their business unhindered and with anonymity in a society without having to reveal anything about themselves?

i think SSI + zk Proofs + One Time Signatures would do a perfect trio... otherwise companies like Chainlink will be generating an offchain database made with all the info that Issuers collect from us.

Couldn't agree more, this is an enormous glaring issue that I have not seen adequately addressed anywhere. It also enables easier implementation of something like a vaccine passport or invisible gatekeepers. Count me out.
