My theory is that his whole family thought that the puppet version of him was better and treated the puppet better than the actual person based off of it (Matthias). He was being replaced and his sanity dropped. he started to get paranoid and thought the puppet version of him was actually alive and therefore he tried to burn it along with his father and the theater his father was working at. But then the puppet returned.

Said this in another comment, but the "never ending nightmare" could be referencing that he's trying to escape from the puppet, but fails to do so. It's like the puppet haunts him. "I want to wake up from this nightmare" could be foreshadowing his guilt about burning the theater. His injuries on his face could be from the fire too🙇‍♀️

THEORY - Matthias is already dead. At the dead, his entire body is... basically dead, and hes like a ragdoll. The amount of times he had snapped his neck is also... concerning. And of course, at the end, he's inside some sort of coffin. Maybe he died on his birthday?

My theory is that Matthias' father was a puppeteer who made a puppet that can be controlled without strings. The puppet was modeled after Matthias and was named Louis and it brought so much wealth and fame to the family that Matthias' parents started to treat it like their son while Matthias was being neglected and replaced. Consumed with jealousy, Matthias burned the puppet and the theater his father works at. But after some time, Matthias started to see the puppet time after time, making him paranoid and a little crazy. Could this be all a dream, a fragment of Matthias' imagination? Or is there something more sinister afoot? And just how can that puppet move all by itself?

Why do I feel like this survivor is going to have the most depressing backstory of the game so far? EDIT: So it seems like some people took my comment the other way around, and now it's become a whole argument. First off, this is Matthias video it's not any other survivor on here, so of course it's all about him on here. Secondly, the people who actually did read my comment I appreciate because they noticed I said "I feel like" instead of believing I said "It's going to be" to show it was just an opinion I had. While it may be true that there are other characters who's back stories could be more sad than others, I only felt like Matthias was going to be sadder considering we all had a glimpse into his back story in this video. Remember to carefully read what I said instead of twisting it into argument material.

It's a stretch, to call this story "most depressing". Sad, yes, like most of the backstories in the game, but not "depressing", and of course not the "most depressing" of the game. Lore upd: it's funny how people assumed that his lore will be depressing, but now we have a full story: a boy from wealthy family was not pressured to do anything, was jealous of a puppet and burned it down because he didn't get his birthday present (boohoo), killing his parents and hurting himself. He has one of the most soft stories of IDV and easiest lives, he wasn't abused or pressured to do anything, just to be less gloomy with his parents. I guess, a lot of gen z can relate to that "tragedy". Matt, with all lore about him, is one of the most privileged characters in the game, not the most depressed. With all that it's still a sad story, kind of, he had it all and ruined it all by himself, so imo it's kind of a gross character, but people will love him because he's cute so that's that. Also there was no paranormal stuff, no experiments, no abuse, no hypnosis, it's already better quality of life than 90% of IDV characters.

I feel like that puppet Louis at the end said “Happy Birthday Matthias” Literally send chills at me. Whatever happens to Matthias, it seems like he is not being cared by his parents and only focused on Louis. His parents only saying Louis name being their proudest but only Matthias saying along with his name too meaning that he wants to become their proudest too. In the end, only being haunted by that puppet Louis no matter how many times Matthias discarded/burns that puppet. However, it’s feels like someone controlling him and the puppet knowing about what happens from the accident from that newspaper article at Matthias’s home as he receives the puppet Louis every birthday he had which is why that birthday theme played. Whoever knows Matthias, kept reminding him every birthday of that puppet and accident. Edit: Scrap the part where I said he received that puppet every birthday. He actually received that puppet, every 1-2 weeks.

an addition: i've watched this several times, and it seems to me that Louis (the puppet) has tricked matthias into thinking that HE's the puppet and not the other way around. When the puppet keeps repeating its name? ("Louis" over and over as the dates change) it seems that he's CALLING Matthias that name. Then when Matthias finally answers by saying "Happy Birthday Matthias", it seems like he's referring to someone else like he believes that name is no longer his own.
