How to Measure an ididit Steering Column

How you guys done measurements for an 64 impala, non SS....i like this steering column

Jeez - I measured my 1965 Plymouth Barracuda steering column and from the top of the "sleeve" to the tip of the shaft is just under 38". If I were to use a 32" (most common) or a 35" steering column would i have to use an intermediate shaft to reach my gear?
